Catalytic Resilience Practices: Exploring The Effects Of Resilience And Resilience Practices Through Physical Exercise, Mackenzie Ruether
Catalytic Resilience Practices: Exploring The Effects Of Resilience And Resilience Practices Through Physical Exercise, Mackenzie Ruether
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
Resilience is of increasing interest to researchers and practitioners as the organizations where they work have become increasingly complex and dynamic. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has only magnified its importance. COVID-19 provides a unique opportunity to study how people navigate challenges and face adversity to be resilient both at home and at work. The main question organizations, teams, and employees are asking is how individuals gain and sustain resilience. To that end, theory and research has suggested a vast array of practices or strategies that individuals can engage in to build resilience to be better prepared to overcome adverse situations …

In light of everything going on in the world today, Goodyear has started to question the next steps of their company. One of their biggest concerns is that since people are not driving as much, they will not be putting as much wear on their tires, meaning the tires they currently have on their vehicles will last longer and will not have the need to purchase new tires as frequently. Goodyear has asked us to look into what their company should do with all of the factors affecting their company. Should they pivot their focus to a different industry to …

An Analysis Of How The Goodyear Rubber And Tire Company Should Navigate The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nicholas Zubek, Alexander Morgan, Alyson Pekkola, Kayla Jancewicz, Thomas Rovnak Iii
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world in an unprecedented way with many countries being forced to shut down all non-essential businesses. A majority of people were laid-off or forced to work from home while the state mandated quarantine regulations. Due to fewer people and employees commuting on the roads, tire usage has decreased drastically. Companies, like The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, depend on high transportation and automobile usage and thus have been heavily impacted. In the nine months since 2020 began, Goodyear has reported sales of $2.367 billion dollars lower than their sales in 2019, which mostly came …

Testing The Effectiveness Of Various Fabrics For Use In Protective Face Coverings, Isaac Daley
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Facemask requirements have been heavily implemented as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to test various fabrics that could be used in face coverings and determine which materials are best for reducing virus transmission rates. Of the seven fabrics tested, five were conventional home-use fabrics and the other two were surfaces modified with hydrophobic organosilanes. Wettability and droplet adherence tests were performed on each material. The materials that performed the best were decyltrichlorosilane (DTS) modified cotton, perfluorotrichlorosilane (FTS) modified cotton, and polyester. Contact angles for water droplets on these fabrics were 106°, 93°, and …

Burnout With Caregiving Of Autism And The Covid19 Pandemic, Erin Babcock, Leah Recker
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
I am working with Leah Recker and we are doing research on parent/caregiver burnout of those with children that have autism, especially during COVID. We are creating a survey on Qualtrics, using stem questions followed by Likert scale items, which we will then send to the Director of Programs, Lisa Thompson, at Autism Society of Greater Akron. She will then pass it along to the parents and caregivers within their community, via Facebook or their weekly newsletter. Parents/caregivers will have the opportunity to complete the survey and we will receive the results when done so. We will then analyze the …

Impact Of Covid-19 On Ohio's National Parks Visitation, Ryan Grzeschik
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed the way in which society operates in order to get the novel disease under control. Businesses throughout the United States have had to close or reduce provided services, stay at home orders have secluded many people, and social distancing limits contact between others so many are turning to the parks system to cope with these changes. This study aims to find how the visitation of national parks in Ohio have been affected through the first six months of the pandemic. Visitation statistics were compared from March to August of 2020 to those same months …

Homeschooling During Covid-19: A Case Study, Rebecca Z. Johnson
All NMU Master's Theses
The purpose of this collective case study was to describe the lived experiences of homeschool families during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically how they managed their day to include teaching elementary school-aged children in the rural Midwestern United States. This qualitative case study allowed the researcher to analyze the phenomenon of homeschooling during a global pandemic, and the strategies necessary to balance home and schooling during unprecedented times. The data for this case study included a pre-interview questionnaire, an interview, and primary source documents from two homeschool families. The means by which the homeschool families organized their day to include the …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
This paper examines the impact of COVID-19 on the US and Texas economy using a computable general equilibrium model, REMI PI+. We consider three scenarios based on economic forecasts from various sources, including the University of Michigan’s RSQE (Research Seminar in Quantitative Economics), IMF, and the Wi orld Bank. We report a GDP loss of $106 million (a 6% decline) with 1.2 million jobs lost (6.6%) in Texas in 2020. At the national level, GDP loss is $996 billion (a 5% decline) with 11.5 million jobs lost (5.5%) in the same year. By 2026, the aggregate total GDP loss in …
Providing Relief After A Natural Disaster Through Credit Reports, Katherine Wecker
Providing Relief After A Natural Disaster Through Credit Reports, Katherine Wecker
Seattle University Law Review
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the world to re-think systems that have been in place for decades, quickly adapting—at least temporarily— to the new normal. Among those systems was the credit reporting system. In response to the pandemic, Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act; an act that, among other things, amends the Fair Credit Reporting Act in regard to how credit reporting agencies should respond to delinquencies resulting from the pandemic.
This Note argues that to adapt to the increasing occurrence of natural disasters, the U.S. government must implement a system in which a consumer can …
I Can’T Breathe, Sarah Smet
I Can’T Breathe, Sarah Smet
HCOM 434 Weekly Response Activities
I created this image to express the feeling of 2020. Pictured are individuals gathered for a Black Lives Matter protest, in honor of George Floyd. I put the words “I Can’t Breathe” over the images. Those were the words that George Floyd gasped in his final moments. It is also what people said as their homes burned to the ground due to wildfires that ran rampant in 2020. Lastly, it is a complaint that many people had when masks became the new normal- this saying was briefly, inappropriately, reappropriated by anti-maskers. All in all, 2020 had an oppressive, stressful, suffocating …

Covid-19 Billboard In South County, Marci Yeater
HCOM 434 Weekly Response Activities
For this assignment, we needed to take a photo of something having to do with the pandemic or a protest. I chose to take a photo of a huge billboard I saw in Gonzales, California. I thought it was important to show this because we’ve never seen anything like this before the pandemic started. It showed the importance of getting tested and it was even translated in Spanish. It’s important for the community to have these signs so they are always aware of what is happening.
Impact Of Unemployment Insurance Benefit Generosity On Re-Employment Wages During The Great Recession, Hayden Cobb
Impact Of Unemployment Insurance Benefit Generosity On Re-Employment Wages During The Great Recession, Hayden Cobb
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper examines the impact of the replacement ratio on re-employment wages during the great recession. This is done using a data set from IPUMS CPS displaced workers supplement between 2005 and 2012. Using OLS analysis, I estimated the impacts of the replacement ratio on the ratio of re-employment wages to pre-unemployment wages. I found that a replacement ratio of one would lead to a 77.6% increase in the ratio of re-employment wages to pre-unemployment wages, without the consideration of any other variables. The findings of the replacement ratio support economic theory and contradict the findings of some major papers …

Parent/ Caregiver Burnout With Autism Due To Covid, Leah Recker, Erin Babcock
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The purpose of this project is to gain an understanding how parents of children with autism are affected by caregiver burnout. We want to understand the different factors that contribute to this burnout and analyze how individuals are affected differently. To do this, we are sending
out a survey using Likert scale items to assess parents’ stress and burnout. We will be carefully selecting statements based off information we gather through peer reviewed journal articles. We would then like the parents to decide how strongly they agree or disagree with each question. This will create a more in-depth picture of …

Living Together In Precarious Times: Covid-19 In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco
Development Studies Faculty Publications
The coronavirus pandemic has laid bare the necessity—for social scientists and the rest of the public alike—of an ecological; non-anthropocentric view of the world as humans grapple with microbes; surround themselves with plants; and engage with non-human animals in ways that range from abuse to affection. This chapter uses this multispecies perspective to reflect on the Philippine experience of COVID-19; offering illustrative examples; sketching tentative insights; and concluding with a research agenda for future work.

Faced with the fears and anxieties brought on by the COVID-19 crisis, educational institutions had to devise new compassion-based teaching and learning policies and approaches that recognized and provided for the pandemic’s psychological and emotional toll. This paper describes how the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines enacted its core value of cura personalis, care for the entire person, in the context of emergency remote teaching. We describe the circumstances that prompted the greater emphasis on compassion and the adjustments to classroom management, course content, class interactions, and assessment. Finally we describe the tradeoffs or costs of this …

The Transactional Distance Theory posits that successful remote learning occurs when teachers decrease psychological or transactional gaps. Narrowing the transactional distance can be achieved through a balance of appropriate course structure and dialogue, fostering healthy student autonomy in the process. This paper describes the Emergency Remote Teaching experiences of faculty and students of the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. It examines these experiences in the context of the transactional distance framework. Findings show that a sudden shift to remote learning mandates greater student autonomy, which increases transactional distance. Because of this, efforts by faculty to increase student-teacher dialogue …

A large body of evidence shows the harmful effects of cigarette smoke to oral and systemic health. More recently, a link between smoking and susceptibility to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was proposed. COVID-19 is due to infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which uses the receptor ACE2 and the protease TMPRSS2 for entry into host cells, thereby infecting cells of the respiratory tract and the oral cavity. Here, we examined the effects of cigarette smoke on the expression of SARS-CoV-2 receptors and infection in human gingival epithelial cells (GECs). We found that cigarette smoke condensates (CSC) upregulated …

Lawyers As Social Engineers: How Lawyers Should Use Their Social Capital To Achieve Economic Justice, Dana Thompson
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
The Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review (MBELR) has always strived to provide a platform for legal scholars, professionals, and students to publish business-related legal scholarship. Yet, little legal business scholarship focusing on the Black business community exists, despite the extraordinary impact that Black communities have in the U.S. business landscape. In a year of revolutionary social change, we are excited to feature in this special issue the work of Professor Dana Thompson, a Michigan Law alumna, in an effort to remedy this gap. Professor Thompson’s career, professional values, and day-to-day work demonstrate genuine, commanding, and inspiring commitment to social …

Excerpt Of Law And Anti-Blackness, Michele Goodwin
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
Professor Michele Goodwin’s essay here (and the article from which it came, to be published in full in our Winter issue) explicitly identifies the development of American law as a project of cementing racial caste. This piece is a call for conversation and asks us all to consider: “How has the failure to acknowledge and address the carnage and prurience of America’s racial origin story impacted life today?” For 26 volumes, we have attempted to answer that question. In publishing this story in this issue, we are excited to be joined by our peers in that effort.

Imagine moving across the country to start a job at a new library during a pandemic. Acclimating to a new job working from home in isolation can be unnerving. How does one connect with new colleagues? How does one learn about the institution’s culture?
An Illinois academic library hired an unprecedented influx of new staff in the summer of 2020 at the height of COVID-19. To build community for these new colleagues, librarians implemented a mentorship program. The working group created a foundation of supporting documents, called for volunteers to act as mentors, matched mentors to new employees based on …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Objective: Significant morbidity and mortality have occurred in the USA, Europe, and Asia due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), whereas the numbers of infections and deaths in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have remained comparatively low. It has been hypothesized that exposure of the population in SSA to other coronaviruses prior to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in some degree of cross-protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection and pathogenesis. We evaluated this hypothesis by comparing SARS-CoV-2 cross-reactive antibodies in pre-pandemic plasma samples collected from SSA and the USA.
Method: Pre-COVID-19 pandemic plasma samples from SSA and the USA were collected and tested by …

In this essay, we discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic drove key changes in schooling and what forces can sustain these changes. Responding to the argument that COVID-19-driven changes may not be sustainable, this essay offers a counter narrative from the Korean context, in which educators re-visited existing school systems and re-constructed policies and teaching practices to fill the educational vacuum caused by the pandemic. This essay specifically builds on interviews conducted with Korean educators throughout the 2020 school year during COVID-19. First, we discuss ownership of educational change as reflected in educators’ narratives. We then explore three driving forces behind …
