We Are Not Alone In Trying To Be Alone, Patricia C. Lopes

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Certain diseases, like colds, tend not to stop us. A paracetamol here, an ibuprofen there, and we are on the go. That is, until we, as a species, are faced with a virus that not only spreads through social contact, but has an estimated reproductive number of 2 to 2.5 and potentially kills 3–4% of those infected (WHO, 2020). To reduce transmission probability of COVID-19, governmental agencies around the world have recommended or enforced measures to decrease social contact; early evidence suggests these measures produce the intended effect (Kucharski et al., 2020).

Addendum To The Covid-19 Panel Survey Report Highlights: Identifying Factors Associated With Risk Behaviors Related To Covid-19, Gabriel Garcia, Joy Mapaye, Rebecca Van Wyck, Katie Cueva, Thomas Hennessy

Reports

Additional analysis with the panel survey data was conducted to identify which modifiable and demographic factors were independently associated with risk behaviors related to COVID-19 (i.e., demographic groups less likely to practice physical distancing and good hygiene). We found that as the respondents’ level of perceived threat of COVID-19 and age decreased, the COVID-related risk behavior increased. Groups who had lower levels of perceived threat of COVID-19 included people with low socioeconomic status (SES), those who had children in their household, and those who lacked clarity regarding the Municipality’s policies related to COVID-19. These findings suggest that efforts to decrease …

Background

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has put an excessive strain on healthcare systems across the globe, causing a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE is a precious commodity for health personnel to protect them against infections. We investigated the availability of PPE among doctors in the United States (US) and Pakistan.

Methods

A cross-sectional study, including doctors from the US and Pakistan, was carried out from April 8 to May 5, 2020. An online self-administered questionnaire was distributed to doctors working in hospitals in the US and Pakistan after a small pilot study. All analysis was done using …

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections

Patients with COVID-19 may have co-infections with other microorganisms. Here we report a case of a patient with an Escheria coli bacteremia secondary to a urinary tract infection, who experienced fevers while on active antimicrobial therapy. The patient was eventually tested for COVID-19 and found to be positive. This case emphasizes the need to suspect COVID-19 even in patients with documented bacterial infection.
