Information Technologies Towards Enhanced Service Delivery During The Covid-19 Pandemic, South Africa, Tinyiko Vivian Dube, Lorette Jacobs
IATUL 2023 Slides
The presentation seeks to examine academic librarians’ support of information technology’s application to provide digital library services and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic in academic libraries based in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. In 2020-2021, these academic libraries introduced new library services and digitised most of their resources to enable online access. These academic libraries embraced the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure that teaching, learning and research do not halt. Embracing IoT and AI caused academic libraries’ spaces to become irrelevant. This research is anchored in the pragmatism paradigm through a sequential explanatory research …

An Exploratory Study Of Elementary School Students’ Reading Performance Scores Before And After Covid-19, Timothy Goodman
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The purpose of this study was to explore the reading performance scores of elementary school students in one school district before and after school closures due to COVID-19. This nonexperimental, exploratory study of quantitative, archival data was designed to explore a single cohort (N = 2,006) of third- through fifth-grade students’ i-Ready reading diagnostic scale scores from five different assessment periods: before school closures in spring 2020 and four subsequent assessment periods after face-to-face instruction resumed in fall 2020. The research sample excluded exceptional student education students and English language learners who had been retained. Mean scale scores of …

BACKGROUND: The mutational landscape of SARS-CoV-2 varies at the dominant viral genome sequence and minor genomic variant population. During the COVID-19 pandemic, an early substitution in the genome was the D614G change in the spike protein, associated with an increase in transmissibility. Genomes with D614G are accompanied by a P323L substitution in the viral polymerase (NSP12). However, P323L is not thought to be under strong selective pressure.
RESULTS: Investigation of P323L/D614G substitutions in the population shows rapid emergence during the containment phase and early surge phase during the first wave. These substitutions emerge from minor genomic variants which become dominant …
The Spanish Flu Of 1918: A Historical Reflection And Lessons, Jonathan Kopel
The Spanish Flu Of 1918: A Historical Reflection And Lessons, Jonathan Kopel
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
A catastrophic Spanish flu epidemic spread throughout the world throughout 1918 and part of 1919. In the spring of 1918, an army training center at the Fort Riley Kansas found the first cases of Spanish influenza in the United States. The first incidence of the virus in Kansas was quite moderate, with low-fever, nausea, headache, and fatigue. The Spanish grip took an ominous turn in the fall of 1918. The moderate United States (U.S.) strain traveled on troops and several ferrying boats to Europe. The injured and the ill were sent back home, spreading freely throughout the U.S. the dangerous …

Factors Impacting Readiness To Perform Secondary Population-Based Triage During The Second Wave Of Covid-19 In Victoria, Australia: Pilot Study, Zachary B. Horn
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Objective: Pandemics generate such a significant demand for care that traditional triage methods can become saturated. Secondary population-based triage (S-PBT) overcomes this limitation. Although the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic forced S-PBT into operation internationally during the first year of the pandemic, Australian doctors were spared this responsibility. However, the second wave of COVID-19 provides an opportunity to explore the lived experience of preparing for S-PBT within the Australian context. The aim of this study is to explore the lived experience of preparing to operationalize S-PBT to allocate critical care resources during Australia's second wave of COVID-19 in 2020. Methods: Intensivists …

A Randomized Experiment On The Effects Of Moral Appeals On U.S. Parents’ Intentions To Vaccinate Their 5e11-Year-Old Children Against Covid-19, Xiao Wang, Jie Xu
Journal of Health Research
Background: Democrats and Republicans in the United States were divided on their COVID-related risk perceptions and their adoption of preventive measures (e.g., getting vaccinated). Based on moral foundations theory and the matching hypothesis, this study hypothesized that parents with a Democratic affiliation would be persuaded by messages featuring a harm/care or a fairness moral appeal, whereas parents with a Republican affiliation would be persuaded by messages featuring an authority or ingroup loyalty appeal.
Method: An experiment was conducted among 567 parents with children aged 5-11, whereby each participant was randomly assigned to read one of the four moral …

Physician's Perceptions On The Role Of The Family In Alleviating The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Ella Cook, Melissa Hewitt, M. Lelinneth B. Novilla
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2023
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have relied on measures such as masking, social distancing, or hand hygiene to stop the COVID-19 viral spread. While these things are important, the preventative role of the family in healthcare has untapped positive potential. Research suggests that when the family is involved in the treatment process, (Tayo et al., 2022) it becomes a medical and social tool in the effort to ensure safe prevention of disease and accurate public health education to prevent unnecessary damage and death. (Prime et al., 2020)

The Lawyer's Duty Of Tech Competence Post-Covid: Why Georgia Needs A New Professional Rule Now—More Than Ever, Julia Webb
Georgia State University Law Review
The American Bar Association (ABA) promulgates the Model Rules for Professional Conduct (Model Rules), which prescribe the behavior with which lawyers must comply in demonstrating competency to practice law. In 2012, the ABA updated Comment 8 to Model Rule 1.1 to require maintaining competence in the “benefits and risks associated with relevant technology,” also known as a lawyer’s “duty of technological competence.” A decade later, the majority of state bar associations have adopted and implemented this language. Georgia, however, remains among the last ten states that have not yet formally adopted the duty of technological competence. The COVID-19 pandemic forced …

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed consumer behavior substantially. In this study, we explore the drivers of consumer mobility in several metropolitan areas in the United States under the perceived risks of COVID-19. We capture multiple dimensions of perceived risk using local and national cases and death counts of COVID-19, along with real-time Google Trends data for personal protective equipment (PPE). While Google Trends data are popular inputs in many studies, the risk of multicollinearity escalates with the addition of more relevant terms. Therefore, multicollinearity-alleviating methods are needed to appropriately leverage information provided by Google Trends data. We develop and utilize …
