Covid-19 Era Requires Urgent Integration Of Virtual Reality Simulations In Medical Education, Halil Tekiner, Cemal Alper Kemaloglu, Achmet Ali Tsaous

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause an unprecedented level of disruption across every part of the globe. This disruption detrimentally affects the field of medical education; in particular, anatomical, surgical and clinical training, all which require hands-on experience. On the other hand, the pandemic not only brings new challenges in medical education but also opportunities for testing the validity of our old education paradigms and for developing the ability to embrace a rapid pace of change in better integrating new technologies in the medical curriculum. We contend that the future of medical education lies in the successful use of VR …

Covid-19 As A Traumatic Event: Mental Health Lessons From Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Briana Tillman, Christopher Rogers

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

As a psychiatry resident working on an internal medicine rotation during the COVID-19 crisis in April, 2020, I witnessed signs of the burgeoning mental health crisis first-hand—among patients, friends, and healthcare workers. It quickly became evident that this experience was akin to a mass trauma, and in this paper we explore this concept and propose using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to address the secondary mental health pandemic of anxiety and stress disorders that is developing in real time.

Reopening America's Schools During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Protecting Asian Students From Stigma And Discrimination, Daisuke Akiba

Publications and Research

The COVID-19 outbreak has prompted a rise in stigma and discrimination against people of Asian descent in many areas in the world, including the United States1. Anti-Asian hate incidents, which have ranged from verbal attacks, refusal of service to physical assault, continue to transpire in the U.S., and they put psychological and physical well-being of Asian children at increased risk. Discussions toward reopening of U.S. schools thus far, however, seem to have exclusively included the infection-related concerns and pedagogical consequences of continued disruptions in face-to-face instructions. Hence, educators, policymakers, and other stakeholders need to have plans in place …

Behavioural Immune System Responses To Coronavirus: A Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Explanation Of Conformity, Warmth Towards Others And Attitudes Towards Lockdown, Alison M. Bacon, Philip J. Corr

School of Psychology

Behavioural immune system (BIS) describes psychological mechanisms that detect cues to infectious pathogens in the immediate environment, trigger disease-relevant responses and facilitate behavioural avoidance/escape. BIS activation elicits a perceived vulnerability to disease (PVD) which can result in conformity with social norms. However, a response to superficial cues can result in aversive responses to people that pose no actual threat, leading to an aversion to unfamiliar others, and likelihood of prejudice. Pathogen-neutralizing behaviours, therefore, have implications for social interaction as well as illness behaviours and responses to health communications. In this study, we investigate how PVD influences conformity, attitudes to other …

Immunogenetic Association Underlying Severe Covid-19, Kendall Mccoy, Autumn Peterson, Yun Tian, Yongming Sang

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

SARS-CoV2 has caused the current pandemic of new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide. Clinical outcomes of COVID-19 illness range broadly from asymptotic and mild to a life-threatening situation. This casts uncertainties for defining host determinants underlying the disease severity. Recent genetic analyses based on extensive clinical sample cohorts using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and high throughput sequencing curation revealed genetic errors and gene loci associated with about 20% of life-threatening COVID-19 cases. Significantly, most of these critical genetic loci are enriched in two immune signaling pathways, i.e., interferon-mediated antiviral signaling and chemokine-mediated/inflammatory signaling. In line with these genetic profiling studies, …

In the Catholic world, pilgrimages and other devotional rituals are often undertaken to foster healing and well-being. Thus, shrines dedicated to saints are particularly relevant in times of pandemic. Pilgrimage to the shrines associated with 20th century Italian stigmatic, St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, known as one of the Catholic world’s most popular saints, is particularly informed by this notion, as Pio is understood as a healing saint thanks to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that marked his ministry during his lifetime, as well as belief in the miraculous nature of his relics. The COVID-19 outbreak has had a massive economic and social impact on pilgrimages for Muslims - because these gatherings could lead to widespread exposures and possible spread of COVID-19 to every corner of the world, it forced the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to cancel Umrah in March 2020. The pandemic has also prompted the Saudi government to limit Hajj, with some exceptions, …
