Covid-19 In Spain And India: Comparing Policy Implications By Analyzing Epidemiological And Social Media Data, Parth Asawa, Manas Gaur, Kaushik Roy, Amit P. Sheth

Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced public health experts to develop contingent policies to stem the spread of infection, including measures such as partial/complete lockdowns. The effectiveness of these policies has varied with geography, population distribution, and effectiveness in implementation. Consequently, some nations (e.g., Taiwan, Haiti) have been more successful than others (e.g., United States) in curbing the outbreak. A data-driven investigation into effective public health policies of a country would allow public health experts in other nations to decide future courses of action to control the outbreaks of disease and epidemics. We chose Spain and India to present our analysis …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Our study presents a comprehensive analysis of news articles from FlightGlobal website during the first half of 2020. Our analyses reveal useful insights on themes and trends concerning the aviation industry during the COVID-19 period. We applied text mining and NLP techniques to analyse the articles for extracting the aviation themes and article sentiments (positive and negative). Our results show that there is a variation in the sentiment trends for themes aligned with the real-world developments of the pandemic. The article sentiment analysis can offer industry players a quick sense of the nature of developments in the industry. Our article …

The Use Of Penalized Regression Analysis To Identify County-Level Demographic And Socioeconomic Variables Predictive Of Increased Covid-19 Cumulative Case Rates In The State Of Georgia, Holly L. Richmond, Joana Tome, Haresh Rochani, Isaac Chun-Hai Fung, Gulzar H. Shah, Jessica S. Schwind

Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Systemic inequity concerning the social determinants of health has been known to affect morbidity and mortality for decades. Significant attention has focused on the individual-level demographic and co-morbid factors associated with rates and mortality of COVID-19. However, less attention has been given to the county-level social determinants of health that are the main drivers of health inequities. To identify the degree to which social determinants of health predict COVID-19 cumulative case rates at the county-level in Georgia, we performed a sequential, cross-sectional ecologic analysis using a diverse set of socioeconomic and demographic variables. Lasso regression was used to identify variables …

Intention To Vaccinate Against The Novel 2019 Coronavirus Disease: The Role Of Health Locus Of Control And Religiosity, Ayokunle Olagoke, Olakanmi Olagoke, Ashley M. Hughes

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

The urgency to develop a vaccine against the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) has waxed stronger in speed, scale, and scope. However, wisdom dictates that we take a vantage position and start to examine the demographic predictors of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. The objective of this study was to examine the role of health locus of control (HLOC) in the relationship between religiosity and COVID-19 vaccination intention. In a cross-sectional survey (N = 501), we found a significantly negative association between religiosity and COVID-19 vaccination intention. This relationship was partially mediated by external HLOC. Collaborative efforts with religious institutions may influence COVID-19 vaccine …

A Bibliometric Analysis Of Scientific Output On Covid-19 Pandemic Outbreak Using The Web Of Science (Wos) Database, Mohamed Idhris, Sivasankar Prabaharan, Manuelraj Peter, Arun Vijay Subbarayalu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected almost all the countries globally, and it is considered a global pandemic. Hence, this study conducted a bibliometric analysis of scientific output on the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak using the Web of Science (WoS) database. A specific search technique was developed based on Corona virus-related keywords from January 1, 2019, until June 24, 2020. A total of 10850 documents related to COVID-19 published from January 1, 2019, to June 24, 2020, were retrieved from the WoS database. The researchers downloaded the data from WoS as a WoS plain text file, and the data …

Musicians And Actors Adjust To Covid-19 Safety Protocols, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Adjusting to COVID-19 safety protocols has created several challenges for Gardner-Webb University’s music and theatre arts students. Masks hide facial expressions and limit sound. Social distancing makes it harder to hear, and performances are in a larger room or on an outdoor stage. Audiences have been scaled back to comply with crowd-size limits.

Collaborative Coordination In A Crisis: Electronic Theses And Dissertations Services During Covid-19 At The University Of Pittsburgh, John Fudrow, Jonah Mcallister-Erickson, Lauren B. Collister

Collaborative Librarianship

In this article, we share a report from the field about the collaborative model of the Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) program at the University of Pittsburgh, and how the program’s cross-departmental committee and distributed approvers model built a strong foundation that enabled success in the transition to remote operations during COVID-19. We review some of the ways that libraries are situated in the configuration of ETDs at different institutions, present a case study of the ETD process and support services at the University of Pittsburgh, and discuss how the configuration of ETD support and processing helped the University and …

Reflections On Bodies And Absences In The Covid-19 Interregnum, Matthew Weinstein Oct 2020

Reflections On Bodies And Absences In The Covid-19 Interregnum, Matthew Weinstein

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This is a meditation on the role of absence during the COVID-19, especially the ways absences are felt and experienced. It explores the roles of bodies as both symbols and material. Bodies are both thought through the logic of borders and difference but also as the raw resources of scientific investigations. This is all examined within and against “education” both in my and in my students’ (pre and in-service teachers) classes and our anxieties of not knowing the what or how we of our jobs in these conditions.

Social Media As An Early Proxy For Social Distancing Indicated By The Covid-19 Reproduction Number: Observational Study, Joseph Younis, Harvey E. Freitag, Jeremy S. Ruthberg, Jonathan Paul Romanes, Craig Nielsen, Neil Mehta Oct 2020

Social Media As An Early Proxy For Social Distancing Indicated By The Covid-19 Reproduction Number: Observational Study, Joseph Younis, Harvey E. Freitag, Jeremy S. Ruthberg, Jonathan Paul Romanes, Craig Nielsen, Neil Mehta

Student Publications

Background: The magnitude and time course of the COVID-19 epidemic in the United States depends on early interventions to reduce the basic reproductive number to below 1. It is imperative, then, to develop methods to actively assess where quarantine measures such as social distancing may be deficient and suppress those potential resurgence nodes as early as possible.

Objective: We ask if social media is an early indicator of public social distancing measures in the United States by investigating its correlation with the time-varying reproduction number (Rt) as compared to social mobility estimates reported from Google and Apple Maps.

Methods: In …

Experience Of An Academic Library During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mathias Gabriel Kasa, Abdulsalam Yusuf

The study shared the experience of an academic library during the COVID-19 pandemic in a Nigerian University. The study was a descriptive survey to purposively sample 2687 subscribers to the library social media platform “the Telegram” used to disseminate library services. The findings revealed that there were more males (83%) than female (17%) subscribers, a total of 446 information resources were disseminated through provision of their links (402), as pdf (31) and Jpeg (8). Applications, documents and videos were the least formats used which was challenged by inadequacies of working from home, poor infrastructure and lack of working space, as …
