COVID-19 is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and is associated with hypercoagulability and increased incidence of thrombotic events. In this study, we investigated the levels of neutrophil extracellular trap biomarkers and von Willebrand factor to assess if these could predict the occurrence of a thrombotic event in COVID-19 patients. We enrolled 202 patients hospitalized with symptomatic COVID-19 infection. Of those, 104 patients did not experience any type of thrombotic events before or during their hospitalization. These patients were compared to the other cohort of 98, who experienced thrombotic events before or during their hospitalization. In total, …

INTRODUCTION: Evaluation of implementation strategies is core to implementation trials, but implementation strategies often deviate from the original plan to adjust to the real-world conditions. The optimal approach to track modifications to implementation strategies is unclear, especially in low-resource settings. Using data from an implementation trial for people who inject drugs (PWID) with HIV in Vietnam, we describe the tracking of implementation strategy modifications and present findings of this process.
METHODS: SNaP (Systems Navigation and Psychosocial Counseling) is a hybrid type-III effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial aiming to scale up the evidence-based intervention, integrated systems navigation and psychosocial counseling, for PWID …
Prescription Practices, Anti-Psychotics, And Covid-19: An Intersectional Examination Of The Long-Term Care Home Setting In Canada, Olivia Ramos
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
Public discourse and concern over the state of long-term care homes in Canada has been ongoing over the last two decades. One of the main sources of these concerns is the off-label prescription of anti-psychotic medications to long-term care home residents. Off-label use of pharmaceuticals is common and can be beneficial in certain contexts, however, there is a risk of anti-psychotics being used as an inappropriate means of managing patients chemically in the long-term care home setting. This paper engages in three lines of inquiry: first, the regulatory landscape of on and off-label prescription in Canada; second, the off-label use …

Mutations in SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) have expanded the viral host range beyond primates, and a few other mammals, to mice, affording the opportunity to exploit genetically diverse mouse panels to model the broad spectrum of responses to infection in patient populations. Here we surveyed responses to VOC infection in genetically diverse Collaborative Cross (CC) founder strains. Infection of wild-derived CC founder strains produced a broad range of viral burden, disease susceptibility and survival, whereas most other strains were resistant to disease despite measurable lung viral titers. In particular, CAST/EiJ, a wild-derived strain, developed high lung viral burdens, more …

Background: Male sex has been identified as a risk factor for worse COVID-19 outcomes. This sex difference has been mostly attributed to the complex role of sex hormones. Cell surface entry of SARS-CoV-2 is mediated by the transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) which is under transcriptional regulation by androgens. P450 aromatase enzyme converts androgens to estrogens. This study measured concentrations of aromatase enzyme, testosterone, estradiol, and TMPRSS-2 in plasma of hospitalized COVID-19 patients to elucidate the dynamics of sex-linked disparity in COVID-19 and correlate them with disease severity and mortality.
Methods: In this prospective cohort study, a total of 265 …

Exploring Determinants Of Transit Recovery After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Udit Khandelwal
Dissertations and Theses
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted public transit systems across the US, resulting in substantial declines in ridership and revenue. At the same time, ridership has increased to different levels in cities. This thesis explores the determinants of transit recovery in American cities post-pandemic. It analyzes data from the National Transit Database (NTD) and employs a two-stage least squares (2SLS) regression model first laid out by Taylor et al. (2008) for data from 2000. Similar to the results of that paper, the thesis finds strong correlation between transit ridership and variables for transit supply and urban and demographic characteristics for 2019 …

“I Had No Idea”: At-Risk College Student Knowledge Of Financial Aid And Resources, Elizabeth A. Rainey, Zach W. Taylor
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Although research has explored what college students struggle to understand about financial aid, no research has investigated how at-risk students on financial aid probation articulate their financial aid knowledge and the gaps in that knowledge. As a result, this content analysis investigates online discussion board posts from a credit-bearing student success course for at-risk students (GPA < 2.00 or below a 67% completed over attempted credit hours ratio) to learn how these students conceptualized their financial aid knowledge and how prior knowledge could have helped them before reaching probationary financial aid status. This study involved 110 students across three semesters in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings suggest students lacked financial aid knowledge to plan their college career, specifically with student loans. They relied on a range of familial resources, but were often unaware that their academic progress was tied to their financial aid. Implications for research, policy, and practice are addressed.

Stemming The Flow: Strategies To Address The Production Arts Skills Shortage Within Australian Theatre And Performance Practice, Tessa Rixon, Anthony Brumpton
Behind the Scenes: Journal of Theatre Production Practice
The lockdown, cancellations, and uncertainties of COVID-19 triggered a large-scale exit of skilled professional technicians, managers, and designers from the Australian arts industry. A significant gap in the national workforce of production artists has since emerged, forcing arts organisations to work with smaller teams and employ younger people with little to no training or knowledge. These pressures are beginning to impact the industry’s ability to meet the post-COVID demand to stage live performances, yet little information has been collected to fully comprehend the issue or to suggest solutions.
Conducted throughout 2023, this research sought to understand the current situation of …

Racial Residential Segregation And Covid-19 Health Outcomes: Evidence From The State Of Georgia, Palak Patel, Simon Medcalfe, Catherine P. Slade
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
ABSTRACT
Background:
According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH), the state of Georgia reported 563,658 cumulative COVID-19 cases and 9,845 total deaths in 2020. Decades of research on racial disparities in health outcomes suggest we should not be surprised with the disproportionate number of cases, hospital visits, and deaths of non-white and Black Georgia residents. Racial disparities in health are often defined by a Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) model. One understudied SDOH is racial residential segregation. In this study we explore the relationship between racial residential segregation and COVID-19 health outcomes. Our paper addresses critical challenges for …
