Azithromycin is a widely used antibiotic and was frequently used to treat hospitalized patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of empiric azithromycin use on the respiratory microbiome in patients with viral respiratory infections is unclear. Here we used longitudinal metatranscriptomics on nasal swabs from a prospective multicentre cohort of 1,164 patients hospitalized for COVID-19. We compared the upper respiratory microbiome, resistome and systemic immune response in patients treated with azithromycin (n = 366) with those who received no antibiotics (n = 474) or other antibiotics (n = 324). We found that azithromycin altered microbiome composition and increased the expression …

The clinical presentation of COVID-19 varies greatly from case to another, with host characteristics playing a pivotal role. The immune system is a pivotal function in establishing the course of SARS-COV-2 infection. Severe instances of COVID-19 and the resulting death are caused less by the virus itself than by the destructive unrestrained immune response. Among the host determinants for poor disease prognosis is probably genetic vulnerability to dysregulated immune response. The objective of this work is to examine some of the host genetic variables that are being studied in relation to the severity of COVID-19. The complex relationship between autoimmunity …

Still A Picture, Not A Life: Scrutinizing Media In Federal Court, Hope Forsyth
Washington Law Review
Before COVID-19, federal judges largely resisted cameras in their courtrooms; during it, they used webcams to hold court. The American legal system is designed for in-person interaction, yet cases during the pandemic were frequently adjudicated outside the courtroom’s shared physical space. Judges and policymakers must now harmonize pre-pandemic law and policy with pandemic-era experience. To do so, decisionmakers need an analytical framework to harmonize adjudication’s tangible foundation and media’s intangible effects. This Article provides it.
The Article first argues that pre-pandemic judicial intuition (as seen in three judicial philosophies) holds post-pandemic promise. The strictest philosophy requires physical presence for crucial …

Engineered immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies typically exhibit superior neutralization potency and avidity compared to their parental IgG counterparts, primarily due to multivalent binding to repeated epitopes on a targeting antigen. In this study, we characterize the neutralization breadth and mechanism of action of IgM-14, a previously reported intranasally deliverable antibody targeting SARS-CoV-2. IgM-14 demonstrates remarkably potent antiviral activity against all pre-Omicron variants but significantly reduced efficacy against Omicron BA.1, and complete loss of activity against the later subvariant JN.1. Background and objectives: During the COVID-19 pandemic, we tested the efficacy of a one-week online security prime (SP) writing intervention in reducing distress among 254 adults (60+ years and/or having an underlying health condition). The efficacy of writing interventions can depend on several factors. Attachment orientations, characterized by dimensions of anxiety and avoidance, reflect individuals' tendencies in how they seek proximity to and rely on others for support, and influence how people experience and regulate their emotions.
Design and methods: Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: Security Priming (SP), where people wrote about what made them feel …

Background: The role of naltrexone in improving acute alcoholic pancreatitis (AAP) outcomes in alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients, remains unclear. Aim: We aimed to assess the temporal trends in AAP incidence and the impact of naltrexone use on clinical outcomes in AUD patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using de-identified patient data from the TriNetX database, including all adults (≥ 18 years) diagnosed with AUD. AAP patients were then identified and stratified by naltrexone exposure. The incidence and prevalence of AAP in AUD patients were assessed pre-(March 2015–2019) and post-COVID-19(March 2020–2025). Propensity score matching (PSM) (1:1) was performed …

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak is becoming a widespread concern, as it is causing a decline in economies and negatively impacting stock markets worldwide. As the Malaysian government implements the Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb the spread of the deadly virus, the Malaysian stock market is rapidly impacted, becoming volatile and unpredictable throughout the pandemic phase. Thus, this study aims to analyse the structural correlation patterns of the Bursa Malaysia Sectoral Index Series using the threshold network approach. The data utilised in this study are the closing prices of all 13 sectoral indexes, spanning from January 1, 2019, …

BACKGROUND. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic provided a rare opportunity to study how human immune responses develop to a novel viral antigen delivered through different vaccine platforms. However, to date, no study has directly compared immune responses to all 3 FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines at single-cell multiomic resolution.
METHODS. We longitudinally profiled SARS-CoV-2–naive adults (n = 31) vaccinated with BNT162b2, mRNA-1273, or Ad26.COV2.S, integrating plasma cytokines, antibody titers, and single-cell multiomic data (DOGMA-Seq).
RESULTS. We discovered a distinct, transient IFN program termed ISG-dim, which emerged specifically 1–2 days after the first mRNA dose in approximately 10% of myeloid cells. This state was …

Optimization of prophylactic vaccine regimens to elicit strong, long-lasting immunity is an urgent need highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Stronger vaccine immunogenicity is frequently reported in individuals living in high-income countries compared to individuals living in low- and middle-income countries. While numerous host genetic and immune factors may influence vaccine responses, geographic restrictions to vaccine effectiveness may also be influenced by the intestinal microbiota, which modulates host immune systems. However, the potential role of the gut microbiota on responses to HIV-1 vaccines has not yet been explored. We analyzed the bacteriome by targeted 16S sequencing and the virome by virus-like …

Market Signals From Online Behavior asks, What do social media trends, Google searches, and online chatter reveal about consumer behavior? It also poses the question, How can we interpret these signals without losing sight of the people behind the posts? This book examines the digital traces left by consumers and explores how these signals intersect with food, agriculture, retail, and beyond.
Drawing from real-time data and social-listening analysis, Market Signals connects the dots between what is trending online and what it means for markets in the real world. Whether it is the rise of plant-based eating, changing holiday shopping norms, …
