Slow And Quick Violence: Illnesses And Injuries In America Is In The Heart, Ling Liu
Kritika Kultura
This article aims to offer a new route into the study of Carlos Bulosan’s America Is in the Heart by going beyond the usual sociocultural focus and turning instead to the material, specifically the illnesses and injuries borne by Filipino bodies—tuberculosis, syphilis, hunger, injuries, even death—to learn about their colonial and migrant experiences. In the novel, tuberculosis affects working-class migrant Filipinos disproportionately in both the Philippines and the United States of America. Migrant Filipinos are also constantly haunted by hunger and are always injured, or even shot; and working-class women frequently die from syphilis. Applying ecocritical theories to study the …

Abide With Me: A Social Ecological Perspective In Selected Pandemic Poetry, Amany Abdullah Abdelaziz Eldiasty, Eman Ebeida Mansour
Kritika Kultura
This article traces the core principles of the social ecological approach, namely, the interconnectedness of social communities and their integration into the natural world in selected poems written by contemporary poets during the coronavirus pandemic and collected in Poetry in Response to the Pandemic, published in 2020 by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, VA. Applying a qualitative approach that integrates interpretive and analytical readings of the selected poems based on Daniel Stokols’s views on social ecology, it argues that although social networks facilitated community engagements during the pandemic (particularly during the lockdown), virtual reality failed to sustain the social …

A Potent Pan-Sarbecovirus Neutralizing Antibody Resilient To Epitope Diversification, Laura E Rosen, Zhuoming Liu, Sean P J Whelan, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) evolution has resulted in viral escape from clinically authorized monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), creating a need for mAbs that are resilient to epitope diversification. Broadly neutralizing coronavirus mAbs that are sufficiently potent for clinical development and retain activity despite viral evolution remain elusive. We identified a human mAb, designated VIR-7229, which targets the viral receptor-binding motif (RBM) with unprecedented cross-reactivity to all sarbecovirus clades, including non-ACE2-utilizing bat sarbecoviruses, while potently neutralizing SARS-CoV-2 variants since 2019, including the recent EG.5, BA.2.86, and JN.1. VIR-7229 tolerates extraordinary epitope variability, partly attributed to its high binding affinity, …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
BACKGROUND: From medication usage to the time of day, a number of external factors are known to alter human body temperature (BT), even in the absence of underlying pathology. In select cases, clinical guidance already suggests the consideration of clinical and demographic factors when interpreting BT, such as a decreased threshold for fever as age increases. Recent work has indicated factors impacting BT extend to environmental conditions including ambient temperature. However, the effect sizes of these relationships are often small, and it remains unclear if such relationships result in a meaningful impact on real-world health care practices.
OBJECTIVE: Temperature remains …

Motivation In The Remote Workplace: Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nina R. Simmons
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Due to their essential role in the promotion of employee and organizational effectiveness, internal processes regulating work motivation have been a topic of interest for decades. Influenced by a need-supportive environment, work motivation is at least partially controlled by the organization. However, employee needs and need satisfaction have been largely addressed in research in traditional work settings, leaving a vastly different work arrangement insufficiently explored: remote work. This holds especially true for involuntary remote work - a viable solution for organizations during a crisis. To address this gap in knowledge, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted to examine basic psychological …

The continued emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants and the threat of future Sarbecovirus zoonoses have spurred the design of vaccines that can induce broad immunity against multiple coronaviruses. Here, we use computational methods to infer ancestral phylogenetic reconstructions of receptor binding domain (RBD) sequences across multiple Sarbecovirus clades and incorporate them into a multivalent adenoviral-vectored vaccine. Mice immunized with this pan-Sarbecovirus vaccine are protected in the upper and lower respiratory tracts against infection by historical and contemporary SARS-CoV-2 variants, SARS-CoV, and pre-emergent SHC014 and Pangolin/GD coronavirus strains. Using genetic and immunological approaches, we demonstrate that vaccine-induced protection unexpectedly is conferred principally …
