The coronavirus outbreak has created a global health crisis that has disrupted all industries, including the construction industry. Following the onset of the pandemic, construction workers faced and continue to face unprecedented safety and health challenges. Therefore, construction employers established new safety precautions to protect the health and safety of the workforce and minimize the spread of the virus. The new precautions followed the advice and guidelines offered by different health and safety agencies like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). Pandemic And Õen Consumption In Japan: Deliberate Buying To Aid The Seller, Kosuke Mizukoshi, Yuichiro Hidaka

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This dialogue contribution discusses whether it is possible to create favorable new social assistance under the market principles, based on the Ouen or Õen (aid) consumption in Japan. The meaning of consumption has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japan, aid consumption is increasing. This means helping local restaurants and producers by willfully and proactively buying and consuming their services and products. This is a favorable form of new social assistance and the result of strong marketing and market functions. The penetration of market forces may surpass pure altruistic behavior such as donations and gifts, by creating new market-linked …

Low Wage Labor And The Undervalued Essential Worker Through The Lens Of Covid-19, Alexandra Delpico May 2021

Low Wage Labor And The Undervalued Essential Worker Through The Lens Of Covid-19, Alexandra Delpico

Senior Honors Projects

In this project, I examine the wealth gap in the United States, low wage labor and how we have come to where we are today in relation to these topics. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2017, 58% of the workforce in the U.S. was earning minimum wage (or less).

Over the course of the pandemic, it appears there has been a shift in public thought surrounding the importance of specific types of labor. We have seen certain jobs deemed as “essential work” during the past year. These are the people who put food on our …

Protecting The Nest: Contact Tracing And The Covid-19 Pandemic At Otterbein, Andrew Meyers

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

My experience started initially by completing the COVID-19 Contact Tracing course offered through Johns Hopkins, which immersed me into the world of contact tracing which I had been completely unfamiliar with before. In the beginning of the fall semester in August 2019, the Otterbein Contact Tracing Program consisted of just Danielle Kilboy and myself, and we initially handled all COVID-19 cases among students on the Otterbein campus. Although we had both gone through the training program, there were many situations throughout the semester that we could not possibly prepare for and we would have to continue learning as we navigated …

Can A Self-Compassion Writing Intervention Impact Feelings Of Loneliness?, Brooke R. Offenhauser May 2021

Can A Self-Compassion Writing Intervention Impact Feelings Of Loneliness?, Brooke R. Offenhauser

Psychology Honors Projects

Loneliness is an increasingly widespread concern for many individuals, especially college students and young adults, and has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Loneliness can negatively impact health and well-being; however, many interventions are not successful in reducing loneliness. One possible intervention may be a resilience practice. Namely, self-compassion may reduce feelings of loneliness because it provides a way to connect with oneself and support well-being. This study aimed to examine the impact of a self-compassion intervention on feelings of loneliness and well-being in college students. It utilized a self-compassion writing intervention compared to a control self-affirmation writing intervention and …

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has posed severe threats to humans and the geoenvironment. The findings of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (Sars-CoV-2) traces in waste water and the practice of disinfecting outdoor spaces in several cities in the world, which can result into the entry of disinfectants and their by-products into storm drainage systems and their subsequent discharge into rivers and coastal waters, raise the issue of environmental, ecological and public health effects. The aims of the current paper are to investigate the potential of water and waste water to operate as transmission routes for Sars-CoV-2 and the …

School Choice And University-Model Schools: A Phenomenological Study, Kelly Sakzenian Cagle

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

This qualitative phenomenological study fills a void in the existing research on school choice by including the University-Model® school to the literature. Through purposeful sampling, seven parents of students enrolled in grades 3rd-6th at a University-Model® school in the North Texas area were selected. The study is guided by Simon’s (1955) satisficing theory to explore parents’ decision-making process in choosing a school for their child and their level of satisfaction with the UM school experience. Additionally, through the study’s findings, the researcher put forward that parents’ decisions are determined by observing children’s development of self-regulatory skills as proposed by Zimmerman’s …

Assessing The Impact Of Vaccination And Behavior Change On Outbreaks Of Emerging Respiratory Diseases, Mohammed Hameed Alharbi

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

The purpose of this dissertation is to use mathematical models to evaluate the impact of characteristics of respiratory diseases like influenza and COVID-19 either alone or co-circulating and how might influenza vaccine affect this interplay. First, we assess the effects of matching and mismatching between vaccine strains and circulating strains during the Hajj. Then we evaluate the impact of the proportion of asymptomatic COVID- 19 infections on the magnitude of an epidemic under three different behavior change scenarios. Finally, we model the co-circulation of influenza and COVID-19 to investigate whether the influenza vaccine increases the combined disease burden of influenza …

School Reopenings, Mobility, And Covid-19 Spread: Evidence From Texas, Charles J. Courtemanche, Anh Le, Aaron Yelowitz, Ron Zimmer

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

This paper examines the effect of fall 2020 school reopenings in Texas on county-level COVID19 cases and fatalities. Previous evidence suggests that schools can be reopened safely if community spread is low and public health guidelines are followed. However, in Texas, reopenings often occurred alongside high community spread and at near capacity, likely making it difficult to meet social distancing recommendations. Using event-study models and hand-collected instruction modality and start dates for all school districts, we find robust evidence that reopening Texas schools gradually but substantially accelerated the community spread of COVID-19. Results from our preferred specification imply that school …
