While pediatric COVID-19 is rarely severe, a small fraction of children infected with SARS-CoV-2 go on to develop multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), with substantial morbidity. An objective method with high specificity and high sensitivity to identify current or imminent MIS-C in children infected with SARS-CoV-2 is highly desirable. The aim was to learn about an interpretable novel cytokine/chemokine assay panel providing such an objective classification. This retrospective study was conducted on four groups of pediatric patients seen at multiple sites of Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, TX who consented to provide blood samples to our COVID-19 Biorepository. Standard laboratory markers of …
Wheat, Rye, And Barley: On Celiac And The Eucharist During The Pandemic, Nathan Jowers
Wheat, Rye, And Barley: On Celiac And The Eucharist During The Pandemic, Nathan Jowers
New Horizons
This article ties together reflections on the Eucharist and reflections on the pandemic by appealing to the author’s experiences with celiac disease. Both celiac and the pandemic force Christians to ask the question “What does it mean to approach Christ’s body when it threatens our life?” Acknowledging the complexity of this question is key to understanding and communicating with Christians across the world, especially in high- stakes situations like a pandemic, where misrepresentation runs rampant. The pandemic witnessed the toll of undue simplifications of this question—both in those who denied that liturgy could be a source of danger, and in …

Automated Lung Ultrasound Pulmonary Disease Quantification Using An Unsupervised Machine Learning Technique For Covid-19, Hersh Sagreiya, Michael A Jacobs, Alireza Akhbardeh
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
COVID-19 is an ongoing global health pandemic. Although COVID-19 can be diagnosed with various tests such as PCR, these tests do not establish pulmonary disease burden. Whereas point-of-care lung ultrasound (POCUS) can directly assess the severity of characteristic pulmonary findings of COVID-19, the advantage of using US is that it is inexpensive, portable, and widely available for use in many clinical settings. For automated assessment of pulmonary findings, we have developed an unsupervised learning technique termed the calculated lung ultrasound (CLU) index. The CLU can quantify various types of lung findings, such as A or B lines, consolidations, and pleural …

Examining Drinking To Cope During The Covid-19 Pandemic As Reinforcement Pathology, Matthew Dwyer
Examining Drinking To Cope During The Covid-19 Pandemic As Reinforcement Pathology, Matthew Dwyer
Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic is the largest global public health challenge of this century. Concerns were raised that the rapid changes associated with daily life during the initial months of the pandemic would increase depression and alcohol use. However, changes in population-level alcohol use have been mixed. Behavioral economic theories of addiction, such as the Reinforcer Pathology (RP) model, have been proposed as well suited to identify individuals, and inform interventions, to address these concerns. However, no quantitative research has validated this claim in a sample recruited during the pandemic. The current study extended upon existing research by examining patterns of …

Non-Histaminergic Angioedema Following Infection With Covid-19, Sheza Malik, Basil George Verghese, S Shahzad Mustafa
Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
Non-respiratory manifestations of COVID-19, including dermatological manifestations, have been reported, and although urticaria associated with COVID-19 has been reported, there have been no reports of non-histaminergic angioedema following infection with mild COVID-19. Non-histaminergic angioedema has a gradual onset and is characterized by submucosal swelling without accompanying urticaria or pruritus, and poor response to antihistamines and corticosteroids. We report a case of non-histaminergic angioedema in a 29-year-old woman with a history of mild COVID-19 infection. Our case highlights the fact that early diagnosis of non-histaminergic angioedema in mild COVID-19 patients is crucial for effective treatment and requires a high level of …

The Qualitative Report
Teaching practice is one of the most significant components of a teacher education program that prepares prospective teachers for a fast-changing and technology-infused world. However, in many developing countries like Pakistan, it has remained stuck in the traditional methods (face-to-face, without proper utilization of technology) which made it vulnerable during COVID-19. This study explores teaching practice methods and strategies used by Pakistani universities before and during COVID-19. It further identifies the causes behind its deficiencies to prepare prospective teachers for the challenges of the current era. Using semi-structured interviews, data was gathered from nine teaching practice supervisors from nine different …

The Plastic Pandemic: Examining Surgical Face Mask Degradation In The Marine Environment In Times Of Covid-19, Christopher J. Mayer
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
The development and use of single-use plastics skyrocketed with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. With the support of world governments, manufacturing companies exponentially increased their output of personal protective equipment (PPE), and wearing surgical grade face masks became a ubiquitous aspect of reopening public society as they proved to significantly reduce the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Over the course of the pandemic, however, environmental researchers began taking note of the improper disposal and increased waste of face masks and other pandemic-associated PPE throughout a wide range of environments.
This study assessed metrics of degradation of black …

Context: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated distance learning to attenuate the spread of the virus, and school-aged children were particularly affected by this change. Because of their age and education level, children generally lacked understanding about the pandemic and the preventive measures necessary to prevent the spread of this and other infectious diseases. It is unknown how many schools nationwide incorporated disease-prevention education in their curriculums during the pandemic. Therefore, developing distance learning interventions that convey these topics at their level of understanding is important to improve health literacy and raise their awareness of factors that positively influence health.

This paper examines social media activity by UK museums during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a general perception that as museums closed their doors for extended periods, their digital presence increased to maintain connections with their audiences. However, much of the research conducted in this area is based on small-scale studies and examples of best practice from large, well-resourced museums. By contrast, this study utilizes a comprehensive database of over 3300 active UK museums to understand the use of Facebook and Twitter across the sector. Specifically, the paper examines the frequency with which museums posted to these digital platforms as …
