Understanding Covid-19, William Carson Ii

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

The SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has changed the lives of many. To combat the disease referred to as COVID- 19, anesthesia providers must be educated on specific topics. Understanding of a brief history of previous strands of the disease details the need for measures to reduce healthcare providers exposure. As patients present to the operating room (OR), viral and antibody testing combined provides identification and prognosis of the disease with infected patients who can transmit the disease. Anesthesia providers encounter transmission entry points frequently increasing possibility of exposure. The disease process of COVID-19 can lead to progression of complications necessitating interventions from …

Sars-Cov-2 Or Covid-19, Amy Phillips

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

The emergence of COVID-19 has stunned the world and challenged the medical field in ways not seen in almost a century. COVID-19 has proven to be unpredictable and can have effects ranging from mild to life threatening, including pneumonia, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, multi-system organ failure and death. This presentation discusses the presentation, pathophysiology, current treatments and implications on nursing for COVID-19. Research is ongoing to determine just how and why this virus attacks the way it does, how to best treat the virus and how to develop a vaccine to prevent future outbreaks.

Attitudes, Behaviours, And The Well-Being Of Older Singaporeans In The Time Of Covid-19: Perspectives From The Singapore Life Panel, Paulin T. Straughan, William Tov, Seonghoon Kim, Terence Cheng, Stephen Hoskins, Micah Tan

ROSA Research Briefs

COVID-19 has affected all Singaporeans, regardless of age and socioeconomic status (SES). Many measures have been implemented by the government to control the spread of this disease, including restrictions on social gatherings, restrictions on overseas travel, and making it compulsory to wear a mask. Measures have also included a partial lockdown – known as the ‘circuit breaker’ – which began in April 2020. This forced Singaporeans to quickly adapt to a new normal with some doing better than others. This research brief provides an overview of how COVID-19 and its related measures have affected seniors in Singapore using data from …

The Relationship Between Religiosity And Mental Health During The Covid-19 Quarantine, Luisauny Gomez, Jeremiah Sullins

McNair Scholars Research

Social isolation has become a public policy under the current circumstances. This isolation can lead to a life imbalance that is believed to affect physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being. Previous research shows that both, a defined sense of religiosity or affirmative secularity, can yield progressive emotional outcomes due to multiple factors such as community support, sense of structure, life guidance, mindfulness and a sense of unity with the world. However, a gap exists in the extant literature regarding the relationship between mental health and religiosity during global pandemics. In order to address this gap, this study sought to answer the …

Towards A Data-Driven Financial System: The Impact Of Covid-19, Nydia Remolina

Centre for AI & Data Governance (2019-2025)

The COVID-19 outbreak has a growing impact on the global economy and the financial sector, which plays a critical role in mitigating the unprecedented macroeconomic and financial shock caused by the pandemic. Given the unprecedented nature of the current crisis, financial regulators and supervisors, central banks, along with governments and legislatures face challenges to maintain financial stability, preserve the well-functioning core markets, and ensure the flow of credit to the real economy. Even though the COVID-19 has slowed down our daily lives and stopped the operation of many industries, it did not have the same effect in the data-driven finance …

More Than Just Privacy: Using Contextual Integrity To Evaluate The Long-Term Risks From Covid-19 Surveillance Technologies, Jessica Vitak, Michael Zimmer

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The global coronavirus pandemic has raised important questions regarding how to balance public health concerns with privacy protections for individual citizens. In this essay, we evaluate contact tracing apps, which have been offered as a technological solution to minimize the spread of COVID-19. We argue that apps such as those built on Google and Apple’s “exposure notification system” should be evaluated in terms of the contextual integrity of information flows; in other words, the appropriateness of sharing health and location data will be contextually dependent on factors such as who will have access to data, as well as the transmission …

Covid-19 Is Spatial: Ensuring That Mobile Big Data Is Used For Social Good, Age Poom, Olle Järv, Matthew Zook, Tuuli Toivonen

Geography Faculty Publications

The mobility restrictions related to COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in the biggest disruption to individual mobilities in modern times. The crisis is clearly spatial in nature, and examining the geographical aspect is important in understanding the broad implications of the pandemic. The avalanche of mobile Big Data makes it possible to study the spatial effects of the crisis with spatiotemporal detail at the national and global scales. However, the current crisis also highlights serious limitations in the readiness to take the advantage of mobile Big Data for social good, both within and beyond the interests of health sector. We propose …

Modeling Sars-Cov-2 Positivity Using Laboratory Data: Timing Is Everything, Thor Larson, Karissa Culbreath, Dennis Chavez, Richard Larson, Michael Crossey, David G. Grenache

Pathology Research and Scholarship

As the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 spreads across the globe, there is intense scrutiny placed on the clinical laboratory tests used to identify infected individuals. Apart from the analytical and clinical performance characteristics of these real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rtRT-PCR) tests for the qualitative detection of the viral RNA, much attention is given to the number of positive cases reported by public health authorities each day. As it pertains to the current Lab 2.0 movement (1,2), there has never been a more clear example of the value of the laboratory in not only diagnostics and …

Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Covid-19: Evidence From Six Large Cities, Joseph Benitez, Charles J. Courtemanche, Aaron Yelowitz

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

As of June 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has led to more than 2.3 million confirmed infections and 121 thousand fatalities in the United States, with starkly different incidence by race and ethnicity. Our study examines racial and ethnic disparities in confirmed COVID-19 cases across six diverse cities – Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, New York City, San Diego, and St. Louis – at the ZIP code level (covering 436 “neighborhoods” with a population of 17.7 million). Our analysis links these outcomes to six separate data sources to control for demographics; housing; socioeconomic status; occupation; transportation modes; health care access; long-run opportunity, as …
