Identity Configuration Of Physician Clinician Educators: A Mixed Methods Study, Lindsey D. White
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
This study explores identities of physician clinician educators (CEs) and finds that their identities are multiple and that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted CE identity configuration. Following a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design (quan -> QUAL), participants (n = 115) completed the Physician Clinician Educator Identity Survey (PCEIS) and semi-structured interviews (n = 12). Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a three-factor model; the PCEIS is an acceptable measure of singular CE identity, collective identity, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CE identity. Qualitative results confirmed the quantitative results and revealed that CEs experience identity enhancement and conflict among multiple identities …

From Motivation To Hinderance: Unveiling Resigned Employees’ Entrepreneurial Intentions And Actions, Shuaijun Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
The phenomenon known as the 'Great Resignation' witnessed a record number of employee resignations since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports indicate that approximately 32% of those who resigned during this period transitioned to entrepreneurship. This thesis explores the relationship between resignation and entrepreneurial actions through the lens of creativity. It expands the typology of resignation beyond a simple dichotomy of voluntary and involuntary into four categories: Genius group (voluntarily resigns with high creativity), Traditional group (voluntarily resigns with low creativity), Forced group (involuntarily resigns with high creativity), and Trapped group (involuntarily resigns with low creativity). Previous research suggests …

Collegiate Student-Athlete Responses To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Alexa Jenny Chandler
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Exercise imposes a physiological stressor on the body which is amplified as training intensifies. Collegiate fall-sport student-athletes return after summer break (off-season) and have approximately two weeks of training (preseason) with coaching staff before competition begins. The 2020 fall season was preceded by a five-month period away from campus due to the timing of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This also meant all commercial gyms and training facilities were closed, and student-athletes were forced to train with the resources they had at home. Upon return to campus, significant changes were made to practice and competition structures in attempt to …

The EMDataResource Ligand Model Challenge aimed to assess the reliability and reproducibility of modeling ligands bound to protein and protein-nucleic acid complexes in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) maps determined at near-atomic (1.9-2.5 Å) resolution. Three published maps were selected as targets: Escherichia coli beta-galactosidase with inhibitor, SARS-CoV-2 virus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase with covalently bound nucleotide analog and SARS-CoV-2 virus ion channel ORF3a with bound lipid. Sixty-one models were submitted from 17 independent research groups, each with supporting workflow details. The quality of submitted ligand models and surrounding atoms were analyzed by visual inspection and quantification of local map quality, model-to-map …

Background: During public health emergencies, demand for N95 filtering facepiece respirators (N95 FFRs) can outpace supply. Elastomeric half-mask respirators (EHMRs) are a potential alternative that are reusable and provide the same or higher levels of protection. This study sought to examine the practical aspects of EHMR use among health care personnel (HCP).
Methods: Between September and December 2021, 183 HCPs at 2 tertiary referral centers participated in this 3-month EHMR deployment, wearing the EHMR whenever respiratory protection was required according to hospital protocols (ie, when an N95 FFR would typically be worn) and responding to surveys about their experience.
Results: …

BACKGROUND: Reusable elastomeric half-mask respirators (EHMR) are an alternative to address shortages of disposable respirators. While respirator discomfort has been noted as a barrier to adherence to wearing an N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) among health care personnel (HCP), few have examined EHMR comfort while providing patient care, which was the purpose of this study.
METHOD: Among a cohort of 183 HCP, we prospectively examined how HCP rated EHMR tolerability using the Respirator Comfort, Wearing Experience, and Function Instrument (R-COMFI) questionnaire at Study Week 2 and Week 10. At the completion of the study (Week-12), HCP compared EHMR comfort with …

Hepatitis B Reactivation And Liver Failure Because Of Covid-19 Infection, Muhammad Mushtaq, Keegan Colletier, Akshata Moghe
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been associated with liver injury incidence reported between 15% and 53%. Viral binding to ACE2 receptors in hepatobiliary cells is believed to cause liver inflammation. The relationship between hepatitis B and COVID-19 is poorly understood, but patients treated with immunosuppressive therapy for COVID-19 are at higher risk of hepatitis B reactivation (HBVr). We present a case of a patient with HBVr because of COVID-19, in the absence of any immunosuppressive treatment, leading to fulminant liver failure and subsequent requiring liver transplantation. Given low incidence, limited data, and no current guidelines, further studies are needed to …

Platelet homeostasis is essential for vascular integrity and immune defence1,2. Although the process of platelet formation by fragmenting megakaryocytes (MKs; thrombopoiesis) has been extensively studied, the cellular and molecular mechanisms required to constantly replenish the pool of MKs by their progenitor cells (megakaryopoiesis) remains unclear3,4. Here we use intravital imaging to track the cellular dynamics of megakaryopoiesis over days. We identify plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) as homeostatic sensors that monitor the bone marrow for apoptotic MKs and deliver IFNα to the MK niche triggering local on-demand proliferation and maturation of MK progenitors. This pDC-dependent feedback loop is crucial for MK …

Gut-microbiota modulation shows promise in improving immune-checkpoint blockade (ICB) response; however, precision biomarker-driven, placebo-controlled trials are lacking. We performed a multicenter, randomized placebo-controlled, biomarker-stratified phase I trial in patients with ICB-naïve metastatic melanoma using SER-401, an orally delivered Firmicutesenriched spore formulation. Fecal microbiota signatures were characterized at baseline; patients were stratified by high versus low Ruminococcaceae abundance prior to randomization to the SER-401 arm (oral vancomycin-preconditioning/SER-401 alone/nivolumab + SER-401), versus the placebo arm [placebo antibiotic/placebo microbiome modulation (PMM)/nivolumab + PMM (NCT03817125)]. Analysis of 14 accrued patients demonstrated that treatment with SER-401 + nivolumab was safe, with an overall response rate …

COVID-19 (Coronavirus), an acute respiratory disorder, is caused by SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome). The high prevalence of COVID-19 infection has drawn attention to a frequent illness symptom: olfactory and gustatory dysfunction. The primary purpose of this manuscript is to create a Computer-Assisted Diagnostic (CAD) system to determine whether a COVID-19 patient has normal, mild, or severe anosmia. To achieve this goal, we used fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FLAIR-MRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) to extract the appearance, morphological, and diffusivity markers from the olfactory nerve. The proposed system begins with the identification of the olfactory …

The Fear Of Covid-19 Scale: A Case Of A Filipino Adaptation And Validation Study, Alexie Basileyo, Dennis Erasga
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
As a significant international health emergency, COVID-19, formerly known as 2019-nCov and later termed SARS-Cov-2 or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, has introduced a myriad of behavioral, emotional, and social problems, most notably the fear of the virus itself. In response, a team of researchers developed a scale that measures COVID-19-related fear in 2020. Today, however, the scale has not been fully tested among the Filipino population in general. Hence, the present research addressed the situation by adapting and validating the original scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and other relevant reliability analyses were employed to assess the scale’s reliability …

Background
In 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic caused educational disruptions to many medical students nationally. Societal and hospital guidelines, including social distancing protocols, resulted in the cancellation or postponement of many elective procedures. A shortage in personal protective equipment also contributed to restrictions in clinical experiences for trainees. The purpose of this study was to determine resident-perceived preparedness in core clinical competencies and evaluate the disruptions to core clerkships.
Methods
A survey was developed to assess self-perceptions of clinical competencies and disruptions to core clerkship experiences. It was distributed to 63 incoming psychiatric residents who were matched to training programs …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the residency experience for physicians across all specialties. There have been studies examining resident perspectives on changes in curriculum and clinical experiences due to the pandemic; however, little research has been conducted on how residents in different specialties interpreted their educational experience and rates of burnout during the pandemic.
Methods
We extended surveys to 281 residents across 15 separate residency programs between November 17, 2020, and December 20, 2020. The questions pertained to burnout and the effects of the pandemic on their careers. Differences between general and specialty medicine resident responses were analyzed using …

MOTIVATION: We learn more effectively through experience and reflection than through passive reception of information. Bioinformatics offers an excellent opportunity for project-based learning. Molecular data are abundant and accessible in open repositories, and important concepts in biology can be rediscovered by reanalyzing the data.
RESULTS: In the manuscript, we report on five hands-on assignments we designed for master's computer science students to train them in bioinformatics for genomics. These assignments are the cornerstones of our introductory bioinformatics course and are centered around the study of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). They assume no prior knowledge of molecular …

Mortality And Comorbidities Associated With Covid-19 Infection In Psychiatric Patients From A State Hospital, Nicole Ann E. Villa, Matthew Driben, Regina Reed, Maria Yee, Eduardo Espiridion
Transformative Medicine
Introduction: Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection has spread globally and resulted in more than one million deaths in the US as of July 2023, where it has been more severe in psychiatric wards. State hospitals are a particularly transmissible location for COVID-19, and the medications that psychiatric patients typically utilize may contribute to the incidence of comorbidities including obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Studies have found that patients with preexisting mental health disorders and comorbidities tend to have worse COVID-19 outcomes. Thus, we examine the mortality and comorbidity rate of patients, and discuss how psychiatric medications may contribute to the risk of …

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether differing poverty simulation formats during the first year of didactic training increase healthcare students’ empathy toward and/or understanding of people living with poverty. Methods: Data collected from 2019 and 2021 poverty simulations was retrospectively analyzed to determine the impact of in-person and virtual simulations on the understanding of poverty. Pre-simulation surveys were compared to detect potential differences in empathy due to the emergence of COVID-19. The 2019 simulation was performed in-person utilizing the Missouri Association of Community Action (MACA) simulation kit. The 2021 simulation was performed virtually due to COVID-19; …

Purpose: Substantial research has been completed to describe the prevalence and risk factors associated with COVID-19. However, less attention has been given to persisting symptoms beyond three months. These persisting symptoms defined as long COVID include fatigue, difficulty thinking or concentrating, memory problems, mobility issues, difficulty seeing, trouble hearing, shortness of breath, and dizziness. Further, less attention has been given to young adults who are more likely to experience mild forms of COVID-19 and potentially differential effects of long COVID. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of young adults experiencing long COVID symptoms and explore the …

Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to examine the reading skills of English language learning (ELLs) elementary students post-COVID-19. Furthermore, this study analyzed the relationship between phonological awareness (PA) and the reading skills of the students. The participants included 22 ELL students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade that attended an after-school program offered by the local Hispanic Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas. To measure the participants’ literacy skills, the primary investigator administered select portions of the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests-Third Edition (WRMT-III: (Woodcock, 2011) as well as select portions of the DIBELS (DIBELS: University of Oregon, n.d.) assessment. According to …

How Did Cognitive Status Impact Health Care Use Among Older Adults During The Covid-19 Pandemic?, Katarina Sako, Janet Wilmoth
Population Health Research Brief Series
Physical distancing measures during the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the lives of older adults. Older adults experiencing dementia and other forms of cognitive decline have impaired executive functioning that made it even more difficult to contend with these disruptions. This brief presents findings from research that used data from the 2021 Health and Retirement Study to examine differences in health care delays and health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic among a nationally representative sample of U.S. older adults (ages 50+) with versus without cognitive decline. Results show that most older adults did not delay getting health care and did not experience …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers were forced to balance the maintenance of ongoing economic activity alongside the measures advised by epidemiologists and other public health officials to contain the viral spread. The magnitude of the pandemic forced major conduits of the global economy to come to a sudden halt through incidents such as border closures, supply chain disruptions, lockdowns and calls for individuals to distance themselves from one another. Like the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, COVID-19 was thought to signal an inflection point for neoliberal political economy where a possible post-neoliberal era would develop in the aftermath …
