An Ecological Study Of An Exclosure In The Mountain Brush Vegetation Of The Wasatch Mountains, Utah, Elray S. Nixon
An Ecological Study Of An Exclosure In The Mountain Brush Vegetation Of The Wasatch Mountains, Utah, Elray S. Nixon
Theses and Dissertations
This is a comparative study of the vegetation and soils of an exclosure in the mountain brush vegetation of the Wasatch Mountains, Utah. The exclosure was fenced and initially analyzed during the summers of 1949-1950. The study area is located in Pole Canyon in the Uinta National Forest, a few miles northeast of Provo, Utah. The dominant woody species of the vegetation in the exclosure are big toothed maple (Acer grandidentatum) and Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii). After settlement of the area in and around Provo, Pole Canyon became overgrazed by livestock. Since 1949 the area has been protected from grazing. …
Pinus Virginiana In The Forest Primeval Of Five Southern Indiana Counties, Mildred I. Ross
Pinus Virginiana In The Forest Primeval Of Five Southern Indiana Counties, Mildred I. Ross
Butler University Botanical Studies
The numerous misconceptions of the primeval conditions in our country plainly show that the most common knowledge of an environment may become less than a half-truth by the time a second generation of men lives in that same area. New environmental conditions bring out the hidden potentialities of plants and animals and gradually men formulate new concepts and believe that they are describing the organism under primeval conditions. It is, of course, amazing how very little man placed on record about the things with which he was associated when he came into the wilderness where life was controlled by natural …
An Ecological Study Of The Relationship Between Direction Of Slope, Elevation, And Forest Cover In Brown County, Indiana, Carl R. Mcqueeney
An Ecological Study Of The Relationship Between Direction Of Slope, Elevation, And Forest Cover In Brown County, Indiana, Carl R. Mcqueeney
Butler University Botanical Studies
The complexities of our deciduous forests, though constantly under the scrutiny of investigators from various fields of botany, present many problems which are poorly understood. Each area, regardless of size, presents new problems which may or may not be peculiar to the area in question. For this reason, it is imperative that as problems arise, they be treated in a quantitative, comparative manner. The primary object of this study is to illustrate the limits placed upon various species of tall trees by environmental factors introduced as a result of the direction and angle of the exposure, as well as the …

A Comparative Ecological Study Of Two Forest Stands In The Illinoian Drift Plain Area Of Southern Indiana, Jack B. Secor
A Comparative Ecological Study Of Two Forest Stands In The Illinoian Drift Plain Area Of Southern Indiana, Jack B. Secor
Butler University Botanical Studies
The rather uniform till plain topography of Indiana would seem, naturally, to imply a homogeneity and uniformity in the plant cover; such, however, is not the case. Friesner has indicated that the state is in a critical location in reference to the distribution and geographical limitations of numerous and varied plant species.
These vegetational differences are especially marked when forest types within the deciduous forests are involved. Potzger has found that microclimatic features are of sufficient importance to vary expression in oak-hickory or beech-maple type by the mere difference of south- or north-facing ridge exposures.
An Ecological Survey Of The Crawford Woods, Clark County, Indiana, Jack B. Secor
An Ecological Survey Of The Crawford Woods, Clark County, Indiana, Jack B. Secor
Butler University Botanical Studies
Numerous surveys of forested areas throughout Indiana have yielded a wealth of ecological knowledge, especially in regard to factors controlling and regulating the invasion and ecesis of deciduous tree species making up these forest formations. Perhaps no other area in the state has undergone a more intense study by ecologists than the Illinoian Drift Plain region, located in the southern part.
A Study In Soil Moisture, Acidity And Evaporation In An Upland Woods At Turkey Run State Park, Mary Fritsche Cundiff
A Study In Soil Moisture, Acidity And Evaporation In An Upland Woods At Turkey Run State Park, Mary Fritsche Cundiff
Butler University Botanical Studies
Structure and development of vegetation has reflected the biological value of the habitat, for vegetation responds to changes in habitat readily; and habitat, in turn, is determined, in its gross characteristics, by climate. However, a uniform climate does not exist even in a small geographical area because the area is modified by peculiar features of soil and physiography. The variety of habitats, e.g., in dissected land surfaces, is in direct proportion to these modifications of the macroclimate. Such features, while perhaps not affecting the arboreal cover, will determine different accents of the secondary and herbaceous layers as pointed out by …
Fossil Diatoms From Lakeville Bog, Indiana, Jack R. Weaver
Fossil Diatoms From Lakeville Bog, Indiana, Jack R. Weaver
Butler University Botanical Studies
In the study of diatoms, bogs furnish an excellent record of diatom flora during the post glacial period. As a result of the Late Wisconsin glacial activity in Northern Indiana was dotted with numerous lakes, many of which are of the kettle-hole type and have become extinct due to deposition of marl and peat. In many bodies of water where diatoms are present, a portion of this sedimentation is composed of the silicified walls of the diatom cells which remain unaltered after the death of an organism. Thus diatom become deposited and preserved in stratigraphic order.
Progress In Succession In The Pennington Grove Of Pinus Virginiana, John E. Potzger, Esther W. Potzger
Progress In Succession In The Pennington Grove Of Pinus Virginiana, John E. Potzger, Esther W. Potzger
Butler University Botanical Studies
In 1932 the senior author reported on an ecological survey in stands of Pinus virginiana in Munroe County, Indiana, viz. the Pennington grove near Weimer Lake, two miles sw. of Bloomington, on highway 45, and the Christie-Freeman groves, four miles nw. of Ellettsville. At the time of the 1931 survey very little ground cover had developed in either of these groves. The repesent study considered only the Pennington grove. This stand has seen no decided cultural modifications since the 1931 survey. Periodic surveys were made in the stand by various groups of ecology students of Butler University. These surveys showed …
An Ecological Study Of The Klein Woods, Jennings County, Indiana, Carl O. Keller
An Ecological Study Of The Klein Woods, Jennings County, Indiana, Carl O. Keller
Butler University Botanical Studies
The primeval forest of Indiana was without doubt representative of some of the most magnificent sections of the great eastern deciduous region. In a previous paper (9) we described briefly the fate of our hardwoods, and pointed out that only small tracts of comparatively undisturbed stands remain for observation. Since reports on the early forests are rather vague, and based on superficial observation rather than on quantitative data, it is somewhat difficult to gain from them a true picture of the phytosociology of these forests prior to time of settlement. Qualitative and quantitative studies of the remaining small stands referred …

An Ecological Study Of The Floodplain Forest Along The White River System In Indiana, Mordie B. Lee
An Ecological Study Of The Floodplain Forest Along The White River System In Indiana, Mordie B. Lee
Butler University Botanical Studies
As pointed out by Potzger and Friesner (9), Conard (3) and Cain (1), a mere empirical description of a forest means little as a definite presentation of conditions operating, and becomes nil in comparative studies. Most of the work on forest ecology in the United States has considered upland climax communities, and very little attention has been given the great transitional forests of the floodplains, and to the writer's knowledge only Oosting (8) has given specific quantitative data on the sociology of the species constituting the crown cover of the floodplain forests.
The present study of 20 stands was made …
A Quadrat Study Of Meltzer Woods, Shelby County, Indiana, Carl O. Keller
A Quadrat Study Of Meltzer Woods, Shelby County, Indiana, Carl O. Keller
Butler University Botanical Studies
As one travels eastward on return from a trip through the prairie states, perhaps the most characteristic feature of the landscape which starts him humming the strains of, "Back Home Again in Indiana," are the beautiful woodlands along the highways of our state. These woodlands are remnants of the great Eastern deciduous forest upon which the pioneers gazed with amazement as they penetrated the interior of our continent. The botanist and Nature lover of the present day ofttimes wish they could have had the thrill of looking at the stately array of massive-trunked, majestic giants in that forest primeval. There …
