Section XV: Biology and the Rise of the Social Sciences

Modern science, it has been said, has undergone three revolutions: the Copernican, the Newtonian, and the Darwinian. This oversimplification is valid if our standard of judgment is social impact. The Newtonian synthesis, which absorbed the Copernican, had convinced men that the physical universe behaved in accordance with inviolable natural laws and that these laws could be expressed mathematically. With the confidence inspired by this world picture, science sought to find those natural laws under which the animate and inanimate aspects of the world operated. During the spring semesters of 1955 and 1956, while the writer was under the supervision of Dr. A. E. Noble, a preliminary survey was initiated on parasites in local fishes, amphibians, and reptiles occurring in the vicinity of Stockton, California. The collection of specimens in this survey included sixteen green sunfish, Lepomis cyanella, and two bluegills, L. macrochirus. Larval trematodes recovered from the heart and liver of these specimens belonged to the family Diplostomatidae Poirier (1886) which is characterized by a conspicuous constriction separating the fore and hind-bodies. It is the purpose of this study to describe Aristotle's "set of presuppositions" as they relate to one science--biology--to lay bare, as it were, the framework within which biological knowledge for Aristotle is to be understood. It shall assume that Aristotle, like any philosopher, has two kinds presuppositions, each of which properly understood may serve to elucidate the other.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

A mosaic of wheat was first observed in Nebraska by Peltier in 1922. Peltier found diseased plants in a large number of winter and spring wheat varieties at Lincoln, and in some instances, he successfully inoculated wheat and corn from the juice of infected plants. The temperatures under which Peltier maintained his inoculated plants are unknown and other criteria now employed to characterize the viruses were not utilized. It is probable, however, that he was working with what is now known as wheat streak mosaic virus.

The peach twig borer, Anarsia lineatella Zeller, sometimes called the peach worm, annually damages peach, apricot, nectarine, prune, and plum orchards in Utah. Many buds and twig terminals are destroyed each spring by the overwintered generation of partially grown larvae. These emerge from their winter quarters almost as soon as host trees begin their spring growth. From the time the fruit becomes about half grown until it is harvested, later generations of twig-borer larvae feed on it causing irregular, gummy cavities which make it unfit for market.

The association of: flies with man has been recorded through many centuries. In nearly all of these records the association is one of discord rather than harmony. In the Book of Exodus, 8:24, in the King James version of the Old Testament, we can read, "...and there came grievous swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants' houses; and in all the land of Egypt the land was corrupted by reason of the swarms of flies."
