The need for a reorientation of science teaching in the high schools of America has been apparent since the 1940 1s. Due to this, the Biological Science Curriculum Study, hereafter referred to as BSCS, developed as a result of action by the Committee on Education of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. Large numbers of public schools in Minnesota have implemented BSCS and other innovations in an attempt to make their biology program a better one. The primary purposes of this study were:
