Some Basic Facts About Primary Blowflies, N Monzu

Research has begun on blowfly species attacking sheep in Western Australia. Already this research has indicated the importance of a species in Western Australia which is not a problem in the Eastern States.

Future management of sheep flocks to minimise fly strike may require recognition of the differences between blowfly species. This article gives a description of the primary species - those which can initiate strikes.

Introduction: Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh., a small member of the Cruciferae, is ideally suited as an experimental plant in mutation research for some of the following reasons: 1. It is a highly self-fertilizing species, which leads to the maintenance of extremely homozygous genetic lines. Outcrossing in the lab is in the range of 0.01%, while in nature it is no greater than 2% (Redei 1975). Thus, there is no confusion between new characteristics due to mutation and those due to outbreeding. 2. Spontaneous mutation rates are relatively low (Redei 1970), again making induced mutations more observable. 3. Its small size …

This work is the result of a year-long study of the definitions of inland wetlands in which definitions from geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, pedology, biology, systems ecology, sociology, economics, political sciences, public health and law were considered. Of these, geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, biology, systems ecology and economics are discussed in detail in this report and used in writing a final theoretical (ideal) definition of inland wetlands for the glaciated northeastern United States. A proposed legal definition for Connecticut is also offered with descriptions and explanations of terms.

Effects Of Mowing And Burning On Small Mammal Populations Of A Restored Prairie., Francis A. Tworek

Student Work

Immediate and short-term effects of mowing and burning management on populations of small mammals inhabiting a reestablished grassland were evaluated. Mowed, burned, and unburned, unmowed areas were separately live-trapped during 1975 and 1976. Ten species were observed but only four were in sufficient numbers to be used for population estimations; these were Peromyscus maniculatus, Microtus ochrogaster, Perognathus flavescens, and Reithrodontoyms megalotis. Direct mortality was only observed as a consequence of buring; young Reithrodontoyms megalotis in surface nets were particularly susceptible. Immediately after both burning and mowing management R. megalotis and M. ochrogaster populations declined significantly. Pergnathus flavescens populations were not …

This study was conducted on Willard Bay Reservoir, Utah, during the summers of 1972 and 1973, to study the spawning biology of the channel catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), and to evaluate potential reproduction for this species in the reservoir. Potential reproduction was evaluated through examination of available natural habitat and use of artificial habitat provided for this study.

Channel catfish were found to mature by the end of their fourth year and spawn from mid-June through August. A total of 12 nesting channel catfish were observed along 15, 0.8 kilometer (0.5 mile) sections of dike. Ten of these 12 …
