Alliinases have been studied in animals and plants, but relatively little attention has been given to bacterial alliinases. Therefore, an investigation was initiated to determine the prevalence and nature of alliinase systems in bacteria. A method of determining alliinase activity in bacteria was developed. The procedure was based on qualitative or quantitative detection of allicin, by a color reaction with N-ethylmaleimide. Alliinase was found to be present in some strains and absent in others. In still other strains, alliinase seemed to be a variable characteristic. It was speculated that alliin cleavage in bacteria might be accomplished via an inducible cystathionase. …

Experiments have been conducted to determine the feasibility of the bioconversion of cellulose into Single Cell Protein (SCP) using a thermotolerant, cellulolytic strain of Aspergillus terreus. Crude cellulases produced during the growth of fungal biomass were tested for their ability to generate glucose syrups by enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. Studies on continuous cultivation of glucose-limited A. terreus resulted in the development of a highly optimized medium which allowed the organism to achieve similar maximum specific growth rates (umax) measured in batch culture. An adult population survey of 4 species of the noctuid subfamily Plusiinae was conducted in soybean ecosystems of south, south central and north central Louisiana. Sticky-traps baited with the synthetic sex pheromone (Z)-7-dodecen-1-ol acetate, or looplure, were used as the sampling tools for 2 soybean growing seasons. The soybean looper Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) reached the highest densities of the plusiine complex with 4 and 5 generations detected in the southern and central regions of the state. Moth density was greatest at Krotz Springs (south central site) during 1977 and 1978; the lowest levels were detected at Niblett (southern site). Males …

An enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of either Nezara viridula (L.) egg or nymphal protein in the gut of potential predators was developed. Through the use of molecular gel filtration species specific antigens were obtained from N. viridula eggs and nymphs. The ELISA developed for eggs could detect 7.6 ng of egg protein while the nymphal ELISA could detect 122 ng of the selected nymphal protein. There were 27 species of insects and spiders representing 6 orders and 15 families, tested for both egg and nymphal predation over 2 growing seasons (1977 and 1978). There were 1886 individuals …

The ontogeny and ultrastructure of the evergreen leaf of Magnolia grandiflora L. were studied by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The mature evergreen leaf was also compared with those of six deciduous Magnolia species. The vegetative apex of M. grandiflora can be described using the tunica-corpus and cytohistological zonation concepts. The apex is composed of a biseriate or triseriate tunica overlying a corpus and varies from 180 (mu)m at the minimal stage to 201 (mu)m at the maximal stage. Part I of this dissertation involved the use of the biological insecticides Dipel('(REGTM)), Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, and Elcar('(REGTM)) Baculovirus heliothis for control of Heliothis spp. on cotton in Louisiana. Seven tests with plots large enough to be considered "grower management units" (plot size 8.1 ha or greater) and one small plot test (plot size 1.3 ha) were conducted using biological insecticides. These tests showed that: (1) generally more Heliothis eggs were found in Dipel treated plots; (2) damage to cotton squares following Dipel applications was generally reduced somewhat; (3) damage to cotton squares following the use of Elcar was not …

Endosymbiosis In The Caecum Of The Southern Green Stink Bug, Nezara Viridula (L.)., Robert Paul West

Studies to investigate possible endosymbiotic relationships within the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), a major pest of soybeans in Louisiana, were conducted. Primary emphasis was placed on the caecum, a region of the digestive tract previously associated with microbial endosymbiosis in insects. By SEM, a monoculture of rod-shaped bacteria measuring 2.5 by 0.5 (mu)m was observed adhering to the caecal crypt walls. Examination of additional specimens revealed various morphological variations including cocci, elongated rods, and rods which were apparently budding, often found within the same specimen. This study evaluates the effects of time of mowing on species composition and inflorescence phenology in a bluestem prairie and contrast mowing and burning treatments. Treatment areas in a native prairie, with a history of summer mowing, were burned and mowed in April and evaluated in June and August of the same year. While reflecting only a single year’s treatment, the study indicated that summer mowing favors cool season grasses, such as porcupinegrass (Stipa spartea), and selects against warm season grasses such as big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii). Certain aspects of the biology of two species of fish, bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), and the assessment of fishing pressure upon the sport fishery of Pelican Lake, Uintah County, Utah, a 680 ha warmwater lake, were studied between April 1, 1976 and June 30, 1978. The growth rate of bluegills (sexes combined) was fairly rapid; the mean back-calculated total lengths from ages one through nine were 55, 112, 166, 194, 211, 229, 245, 256 and 259 mm. Introduction: Since the 1890 publishing of Webbers "Catalogue of ' the Flora of Nebraska," very little has been written about the moss flora of this state. From Webbers original list of 47 species, the number increased to 75 in 1924 (Wolf) and finally to 99 species in 1977 (Churchill and Redfearn). Also, in 1975 Koch has written about the occurrence of the family Pottiaceae in Nebraska.

The objectives of this study were to determine if a relationship exists between selected morpho-physiological traits and general combining ability for yield in determinate and indeterminate tomato inbred lines, to determine if a relationship exists between these traits and the average probability that an inbred can produce transgressive segregates, and to determine if the levels of some physiological traits that contribute to yield differ between growth habits.

Among determinate inbreds, general combining ability for yield is significantly correlated with yield and fruit number but not with harvest index, photosynthesis, specific leaf weight, or average fruit size. Among indeterminates, general combining …
