From The Garden To The Lab, Harli Smith, Hannah Scruggs, Lindsey Whaley
JSU Student Symposium 2025
As a part of BY107 (Honors Introductory Biology Lab I), all students are tasked with creating a group presentation outlining the procedures conducted throughout the course. The purpose of the lab was to discover antibiotic producers in local, Alabama soil. Finding antibiotic producers is important due to the increasing prevalence of ESKAPE pathogens, or strains of bacterial infections that have evolved to be resistant to most mainstream antibiotics. By utilizing methods such as streaking for isolation, testing for zones of inhibition, gram staining, and Kirby Bauer Assays, we were able to prove that our soil sample, which was found in …

Is Spring Break Coming Early? Effects Of Climate Change On Alabama's Native Plant Phenology, Kathleen Madden, Madisyn Barksdale, Kelly Pruitt, Summer Zamora
JSU Student Symposium 2025
Please note: no video is available for this presentation.
Climate change has significantly impacted biodiversity, prompting many species to adapt by altering their phenology—the timing of life cycle events. Shifts in plant phenology can have far-reaching ecological consequences, particularly for species that rely on these plants directly or indirectly. One critical consequence is the temporal mismatch between plants and their pollinators, a phenomenon observed in multiple species. Studies using satellite imagery have documented advances in spring phenology across the United States, but species-specific data remain limited, especially in the biodiverse and ecologically vulnerable Southeastern region.
To address this gap, we …

Baghdad Science Journal
Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an endemic disease that causes serious disease and economic loss in the majority of countries around the world. MiRNAs are an epigenetic factor that is essential to the regulation of the immune response by interfering with cytokine expression; one such miRNA is microRNA-146a. The aim of the present study was to assess if we could use microRNA 146a as a biomarker for the detection of CE and to determine the relationship between microRNA 146a gene expression and IL-17 in patients with CE. The study included 50 CE patients who were admitted to the hospital in Baghdad, …

Aligning Exons, Introns, And Flanking Regions Of Cyc And Cuc Genes In Lonicera (Caprifoliaceae), Mark Mordukhay
Theses and Dissertations
The genus Lonicera (Caprifoliaceae) exhibits great diversity in floral symmetry, petal fusion, and organ arrangement, making it an ideal system for exploring the genetic basis of morphological evolution. We focus here on the roles of CYC and CUC gene families, (CYC2A, CYC2B, CYC3A, CYC3B, CUC2A, and CUC2B) and their potential contributions in shaping floral symmetry and organ fusion. The data set included nucleotide sequences from over 90 Lonicera species, extracted from samples collected from natural habitats or herbaria and then sequenced. A custom bioinformatics pipeline was developed in R using Bioconductor packages to automate BLAST searches, filter results, scan for …

Acoustic Monitoring Of Oak Toads (Anaxyrus Quercicus), A Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Ecosystem Endemic Amphibian, Alex Ward Foote
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Longleaf pine ecosystem is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world with only 3% remaining. Many endemic species to the longleaf pine ecosystem are also in decline and suffer from habitat loss resulting from fire exclusion, urbanization, agriculture, and industrial silviculture. Oak Toads (Anaxyrus quercicus) are a longleaf pine ecosystem obligate; the species is experiencing declines across its range and only has protections in Virginia and North Carolina. We used data from an array of Automated Recoding Units across four years (2013, 2014, 2015, 2019) at three state-owned wildlife management areas to capture audio files …

Understanding the needs of everyone in the food system is vital to solving the food waste problem. If interventions are misaligned with stakeholder needs, the resultant impact will be highly diminished and/or will result in unintended consequences. We there fore conducted significant stakeholder engagement to identify and prioritise stakeholder needs.
