We are facing unprecedented environmental challenges as we enter the new millennium as human choices and practices have repeatedly led to environmental degradation. Increasingly there are individuals and groups seeking to address this environmental crisis and move toward more sustainable patterns of living. But in order to make alternative choices it will be essential to draw upon the wealth and variety of human capabilities.
For nearly 350 years Western culture has looked to reason and rationality to provide truth and direction. The affective side of being human, feelings, intuition, love, care, wonder, mystery and hope have largely been devalued. In …

This is an account of the origin and development of biological science on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University on the eve of the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the campus and Central University. This history is written from the point of view of a faculty member who had also served as a departmental chairman for a number of years.

That biology is a unified subject, in contrast to botany and zoology as separate sciences, is continuing to make progress and its advocates are endeavoring to meet the pedagogical needs of teachers of various teaching views, is evidenced by the recent appearance of three new texts within the field. These texts are, Wheat and Fitzpatrick's "Advanced Biology"; Plunkett's "Outlines of Modern Biology"; and Scott's "Science of Biology."
