Niche Differentiating Mechanisms In Two Sympatric Species Of Swallows, David Thomas Moody Jul 1968

Niche Differentiating Mechanisms In Two Sympatric Species Of Swallows, David Thomas Moody

All Master's Theses

The present study considers certain aspects of the ecologies of cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and bam swallows (Hirundo rustica) in an area of overlap, where both species are found nesting together and foraging over the same fields. Careful attention was given to foraging flight patterns, foraging elevations, and food consumed by each species in an effort to determine whether or not there is any evidence of competition for food resources. Aggressive interactions between the species were recorded, and the general timing of their nesting cycles was noted.

Bear Lake And Its Future, William F. Sigler May 1962

Bear Lake And Its Future, William F. Sigler

Faculty Honor Lectures

Even in such a wide-ranging and eternally changing field as biology, a few statements about certain aspects can be made with a minimum likelihood of their being refuted. In this class are the following: No two lakes are identical. Any given lake is simultaneously many things to many people. A lake is never static. The influence of a lake reaches far beyond its shores.

Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, can be used to good advantage to exemplify the truth of these statements. It defies meaningful comparison with other lakes unless a mass of detailed statistics is employed. To the fisherman and water …

Studies On The Trematode Larva Neascus, Thomas Reyes Jan 1957

Studies On The Trematode Larva Neascus, Thomas Reyes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the spring semesters of 1955 and 1956, while the writer was under the supervision of Dr. A. E. Noble, a preliminary survey was initiated on parasites in local fishes, amphibians, and reptiles occurring in the vicinity of Stockton, California. The collection of specimens in this survey included sixteen green sunfish, Lepomis cyanella, and two bluegills, L. macrochirus. Larval trematodes recovered from the heart and liver of these specimens belonged to the family Diplostomatidae Poirier (1886) which is characterized by a conspicuous constriction separating the fore and hind-bodies. The leaf-like forebody with the lateral borders converging ventrally to form a …

An Ecological Study Of The Heath Balds Of The Great Smoky Mountains, Stanley A. Cain Jan 1930

An Ecological Study Of The Heath Balds Of The Great Smoky Mountains, Stanley A. Cain

Butler University Botanical Studies

The inhabitants of the Great Smoky mountains usually refer to the heath communities under consideration as "slicks" or "balds." The former name is derived from the smooth appearance they present on the ridges and mountain tops when viewed from a distance and which is entirely misleading, for they are extremely rough and tangled. The name "bald" refers to the absence of trees, these areas being exclusively occupied by shrubs. The term "heath bald" is used in this paper to include all such treeless areas dominated by members of the order Ericales. The use of the term "heath" is not entirely …

The Genus Trillium In Indiana, Ray C. Friesner Jan 1929

The Genus Trillium In Indiana, Ray C. Friesner

Butler University Botanical Studies

The fact that members of the genus Trillium are quite variable is well borne out when one notes the number of reports of variations and teratological conditions in the literature. Such conditions make it important that more detailed critical study be made of members of the genus from the standpoint of their distribution and variation in smaller areas. Studies of the species occurring in wider areas were made by Gleason (19) and Gates (18). More detailed study of particular species in more restricted areas is of considerable value in adding light to the problem of species relationship and delimitation. Such …
