A Survey Of Ncaa Division 1 Strength And Conditioning Coaches- Characteristics And Opinions, Jeremy Powers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The role of the Strength & Conditioning coach (SCC) has increased dramatically in collegiate athletics over the past 30 years. The SCC now spends more time with the athletes than even the individual sport coaches do because of NCAA rules. Despite the importance of the SCC, little is known as to what makes a good SCC and what a typical SCC is like currently. Limited amounts of research have been conducted to determine the characteristics and opinions of this specific population.

The main role of a SCC is to enhance athletic performance of the athletes at a university. They achieve …

Gender Differences And Biomechanics In The 3000m Steeplechase Water Jump, Kassi R. Andersen, Bryan K. Lindsay, Iain Hunter

Faculty Publications

Since 1996, women have been competing in the 3000m steeplechase race internationally. Whenever women and men both compete in similar events with different equipment (the barriers are lower for women) consideration should be given as to how techniques should be coached differently. This study investigated the differences in water-jump technique between men and women after accounting for differences in running speed and which techniques led to maintenance of race pace through the water-jump. Eighteen men and 18 women were filmed at two major track and field meets during the 2004 season. Peak Motus 8.2 was used to digitize all seven …

Accounting For Athletics: A Balanced Scorecard Approach, Daniel D. Delaney

Honors Scholar Theses

The Balanced Scorecard is a managerial accounting system designed for internal use in order to align four different facets of a business with its overall vision and strategy. It emphasizes that an organization should not be judged on financial performance alone, but also on a variety of non-financial metrics. Using the Balanced Scorecard, the Athletic Department at the University of Connecticut has been analyzed as to which metrics are the most important in terms of fulfilling their mission statement.

Blurring The Boundary Lines Between Amateur And Professional Sports, Kenneth D. Ferguson Apr 2008

Blurring The Boundary Lines Between Amateur And Professional Sports, Kenneth D. Ferguson

Faculty Works

The NCAA expends substantial resources to insure that the distinction between amateur and professional sports is maintained in collegiate athletics. Preserving the boundary lines between amateur and professional sports is more than an attempt to ensure philosophical purity or a nostalgic quest for historic preservation. The boundaries between amateur and professional sports are maintained by legal doctrines in several areas.

Application of tort law to coaches' liability for conduct leading to injuries to athletes reflects and preserves the boundary lines between professional and amateur sports. Although the implied assumption of risk doctrine should preserve that distinction, some courts have applied …

Ball Fair? A Quantitative Examination Of Which Universities Succeed In The Men’S Ncaa Tournament, Wilfred T. Reilly Mar 2008

Ball Fair? A Quantitative Examination Of Which Universities Succeed In The Men’S Ncaa Tournament, Wilfred T. Reilly

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

Mid-major American universities spend a great deal of money on intercollegiate athletics. For example, the University of Buffalo recently spent $10-20 million to join NCAA Division One, and Southern Illinois University plans to spend $80 million to improve athletic facilities. Much of this money is spent because coaches and administrators see athletic success as a path to national recognition for their institutions. High-prestige competitions like the men’s NCAA basketball tournament are perceived as fair games that all schools have a chance to win, and regional universities invest millions in attempts to win them. This paper tests the logic of this …
