Former College Athletes And Their Persistence In Medical School: A Phenomenological Study, Michael J. Woodson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand the experiences of former college-athletes who persist in medical school. The theories that guided this study were the achievement goal theory by Nicholls and the self-determination theory by Deci and Ryan, as each theory relates to the motivation to succeed in academics, as well as athletic participation. Eleven participants were purposefully selected to address the question: How do former college student-athletes describe their experiences in relation to the attributes and characteristics that allowed them to persist in medical school? Grant Long played basketball for the EMU Hurons from 1984 until 1988 before going on to a 15-year career in the National Basketball Association. Long speaks here about the decision to come to EMU, the tenacity of EMU recruiters, and the playing style of previous EMU basketball teams. Adolescent Athletes’ Perspectives On The Social Implications Of Sport-Related Concussion, Tamara C. Valovich Mcleod, Justin S. Disanti, Richelle M. Williams, Cailee E. Welch Bacon
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Sport-related concussion can affect many domains of a patient’s health status. Social functioning is an important consideration, especially for adolescent athletes. Our purpose was to explore adolescent athletes’ social perspectives regarding sport and concussion. Methods: Using a qualitative study design we interviewed 12 interscholastic athletes who had sustained a sport-related concussion. The interviews focused on injury details, and explored the physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual components of sport and health. Themes and categories were identified using the consensual qualitative research process by a three-person research team. A comprehensive codebook that captured the main themes and categories resulted. Results: Following …
