Athletes are constantly looking for ways to increase their lung capacity. The larger the lung capacity, the more air, specifically oxygen, can be taken in by the athlete. Thus, increasing lung capacity increases endurance, allowing athletes to perform at a higher level for longer periods of time without feeling tired. If lung capacity remains the same while duration or intensity of activity increases, oxygen intake remains the same and there is more stress on the heart to get more oxygen to muscles and remove waste (Rathi 2014). Context: Deficits in dynamic balance have been a strong predictor of lower extremity injury. Lower extremity dynamic balance between gender and sport have been examined but there is inconclusive data that supports a difference.

Purpose: To determine a difference in dynamic balance between NCAA DIII men’s and women's soccer/lacrosse using the modified star excursion balance test (SEBT).

Design: Dynamic balance assessment using the modified SEBT. Subjects have one test and will complete 3 trials using their dominant leg. Average score of the 3 trials will be used in our analysis.

In the months of September, October, and half of November (2019) I have observed and taken note of my performance of gender in social groups (athletics and sorority) and under the constraints of gendered expectations on Pepperdine University’s campus. In addition to these observations, I reflected on influential past experiences and re-read journal entries from my time at college. Through this self-analysis I have come to realize that my own gender performance constitutes both sides of the culturally affirmed binary with my female masculinity partnered with my permeable ego-boundary. In the United States, an estimated 20% of college students have an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). AUD is conceptualized as compulsive use of alcohol even when presented with adverse effects. Historically, student activities and organization-involvement (e.g., Greek life) was a hypothesized risk factor for student substance use. However, other studies suggest that joining clubs and developing a support system during college can protect against substance use disorders. Undergraduate students were recruited from a South Eastern University using a university-sponsored, online recruitment website. The sample was predominantly White (n = 150; 86.70%) and female (n = 127; 73.40%). We …

Allport’s (1954) Intergroup Contact hypothesis suggests that interaction among people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds can reduce prejudice, particularly in situations that involve cooperation and common goals. Although participation in competitive sports may provide opportunities for cooperative interaction among people from different racial backgrounds, and athletic teams tend to be more diverse at higher levels (NCAA 2019), relatively little work has examined the contact hypothesis in this context. Using a national representative data set (N = 966), we examine whether respondents’ levels of competitive athletic experience are related to their attitudes toward African Americans. We find no bivariate relationship …

"A Dream Deferred": The Desegregation And Integration Of Clemson Athletics, Luke A. Ekstrom

Although Clemson University’s first African-American student, Harvey Gantt,

was admitted in 1963, the first African-American athlete did not sign with Clemson until

1969. This thesis assesses the years leading up to athletic desegregation at Clemson

University, and explores the alleged barriers to the successful recruitment of African-

American athletes at Clemson. While there were legitimate obstacles to signing African-

American athletes, such as the academic standards of the Atlantic Coast Conference and

the personal preference of African-Americans choosing to go elsewhere, I argue that

these barriers alone were insufficient to preclude the signing of an African-American

This dissertation is a qualitative case study examination of the strategic management of critical resources in an HBCU athletic program. It begins with a historical overview of HBCUs and HBCU athletic departments focusing on the systemic and societal influences that contributed to the current state of HBCU athletic programs. This dissertation later discusses the influence of a lack of financial resources on HBCU athletic departments further depletes the ability to operate with a competitive advantage.
