An Automated Machine Learning Approach To The Retrieval Of Daily Soil Moisture In South Korea Using Satellite Images, Meteorological Data, And Digital Elevation Model, Nari Kim, Soo-Jin Lee, Eunha Sohn, Mija Kim, Seonkyeong Seong, Seung Hee Kim, Yangwon Lee

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research

Soil moisture is a critical parameter that significantly impacts the global energy balance, including the hydrologic cycle, land–atmosphere interactions, soil evaporation, and plant growth. Currently, soil moisture is typically measured by installing sensors in the ground or through satellite remote sensing, with data retrieval facilitated by reanalysis models such as the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS). However, the suitability of these methods for capturing local-scale variabilities is insufficiently validated, particularly in regions like South Korea, where land surfaces are highly complex and heterogeneous. In contrast, artificial intelligence …

A Primer On How Al Algorithms Control You, Russell Fulmer

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can control you by exerting heavy influence on your worldview. Your worldview is akin to your personal philosophy, which affects how you perceive and label social systems and structures, groups of people, and politics. Algorithms impact your decision-making, beliefs, mood, relationships, and more. My rhetoric is intentionally strong when discussing algorithms, and I invite you to assess its merit by reviewing related literature and thinking critically.

Regulating Algorithmic Harms, Sylvia Lu Sep 2024

Regulating Algorithmic Harms, Sylvia Lu

Law & Economics Working Papers

In recent years, the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) innovations has led to a rise in algorithmic harms—harms emerging from AI operations that pose significant threats to civil rights and democratic values in today’s technological landscape. A facial recognition system for improving criminal detection wrongly collected sensitive personal data and flagged racial minorities as shoplifters. A risk-prediction algorithm adopted to identify patients denied medical treatment to Black individuals with poor health conditions. A social media algorithm intended to boost social engagement exacerbated addictive behavior and mental illness in teenagers. These harms are becoming increasingly ubiquitous yet often manifest in …

Is Distance From Innovation A Barrier To The Adoption Of Artificial Intelligence?, Jennifer Hunt, Iain Cockburn, James Bessen

Faculty Scholarship

Using our own data on Artificial Intelligence publications merged with Burning Glass vacancy data for 2007-2019, we investigate whether online vacancies for jobs requiring AI skills grow more slowly in U.S. locations farther from pre-2007 AI innovation hotspots. We find that a commuting zone which is an additional 200km (125 miles) from the closest AI hotspot has 17% lower growth in AI jobs’ share of vacancies. This is driven by distance from AI papers rather than AI patents. Distance reduces growth in AI research jobs as well as in jobs adapting AI to new industries, as evidenced by strong effects …

Democratization Of Custom, High Quality Large Language Models, Pablo Lopez

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown exceptional performance in several natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Customizing LLMs boosts their performance in domain specific tasks but typically requires substantial resources and effort for training, such as supervised fine-tuning. This research proposes methods to achieve significant accuracy improvements given minimal resources, particularly focusing on open-ended question answering with a given piece of context. We utilize an LLM’s self-generated training data to fine-tune the LLM and partial fine-tuning with on-demand GPU to reduce practitioner training costs. The research shows that these methods give significant performance gains in a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) based …
