Where Is The Author: The Copyright Protection For Ai-Generated Works, Chieh Huang Jun 2022

Where Is The Author: The Copyright Protection For Ai-Generated Works, Chieh Huang

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

The two groups of the human-or-machine questions, whether AI-generated works are copyrightable and whether AI-generated works have human authors, are revisiting the current copyright law with the emergence of AI-generated works. These revisiting questions reveal that the current authorship requirement fails to provide a clear and operable standard on evaluating a human contributor’s intellectual labor for creative output. Such a defect of the current authorship requirement has to be fixed to respond to the technological change of artificial intelligence and the burgeoning prevalence of AI- or advanced computer program-generated works.

This dissertation’s main goal is to fix the flaw …

Using Artificial Neural Networks To Predict Intra-Abdominal Abscess Risk Post-Appendectomy, Morouge M Alramadhan, Hassan S Al Khatib, James R Murphy, Kuojen Tsao, Michael L Chang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVE: To determine if artificial neural networks (ANN) could predict the risk of intra-abdominal abscess (IAA) development post-appendectomy.

BACKGROUND: IAA formation occurs in 13.6% to 14.6% of appendicitis cases with "complicated" appendicitis as the most common cause of IAA. There remains inconsistency in describing the severity of appendicitis with variation in treatment with respect to perforated appendicitis.

METHODS: Two "reproducible" ANN with different architectures were developed on demographic, clinical, and surgical information from a retrospective surgical dataset of 1574 patients less than 19 years old classified as either negative (n = 1,328) or positive (n = 246) for IAA post-appendectomy …

A Self-Learning Intersection Control System For Connected And Automated Vehicles, Ardeshir Mirbakhsh May 2022

A Self-Learning Intersection Control System For Connected And Automated Vehicles, Ardeshir Mirbakhsh

Dissertations

This study proposes a Decentralized Sparse Coordination Learning System (DSCLS) based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to control intersections under the Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) environment. In this approach, roadway sections are divided into small areas; vehicles try to reserve their desired area ahead of time, based on having a common desired area with other CAVs; the vehicles would be in an independent or coordinated state. Individual CAVs are set accountable for decision-making at each step in both coordinated and independent states. In the training process, CAVs learn to minimize the overall delay at the intersection. Due to the …

An Explainable Artificial Intelligence Approach To Convolutional Neural Network Optimization And Understanding, Nicholas Laudermilk

2022 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) show promise for the technology’s use in widespread biomedical applications. As these models grow more complex, understanding how they work becomes increasingly more difficult. To use these systems in the healthcare setting, it is imperative to reduce model ambiguity and increase user trust in their decision-making. Explainable AI (XAI) techniques were used to optimize the development of a super-resolution convolutional neural network (SRCNN). Image augmentation was performed on the training data, and k-fold cross-validation was used to obtain more reliable metrics. Activation maps were used to show the output of each convolutional layer, and the …

The underserved population could be at risk during the times of crisis, unless there is strong involvement from government agencies such as local and state Health departments and federal Center for Disease Control (CDC). The COVID-19 pandemic was a crisis of different proportion, creating a different type of burden on government agencies. Vulnerable communities including the elderly populations and communities of color have been especially hard hit by this pandemic. This forced these agencies to change their strategies and supply chains to support all populations receiving therapeutics. The National Science Foundation (NSF Award # 2028612) funded this research to help …

Using Antipatterns To Improve Database Code Fragments, And Utilizing Knowledge Graphs And Nlp Patterns To Extract Standardized Data Element Names, Bader Alshemaimri May 2022

Using Antipatterns To Improve Database Code Fragments, And Utilizing Knowledge Graphs And Nlp Patterns To Extract Standardized Data Element Names, Bader Alshemaimri

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Database code fragments exist in software systems by using SQL as the stan- dard language for relational databases. Traditionally, developers bind databases as backends to software systems for supporting user applications. However, these bind- ings are low-level code and implemented to persist user data, so Object Relational Mapping (ORM) frameworks take place to abstract database access details. These approaches are prone to problematic database code fragments that negatively im- pact the quality of software systems. In the first part of the dissertation, we survey problematic database code fragments in the literature and examine antipatterns that occur in low-level database access …

From Negative To Positive Algorithm Rights, Cary Coglianese, Kat Hefter May 2022

From Negative To Positive Algorithm Rights, Cary Coglianese, Kat Hefter

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

We consider this issue here and suggest that the current calls for a negative right to be free from AI could very well transform over time into positive claims that demand the use of algorithmic tools by government officials. In Part I, we begin by sketching the current landscape surrounding the adoption of AI by government. That landscape is characterized by strong activist and scholarly voices expressing a pronounced aversion to the use of digital algorithms—and taking a decidedly negative rights tone. In Part II, we show that, although aversion to complex technology might be understandable, that aversion is neither …

Hardware Isolation Approach To Securely Use Untrusted Gpus In Cloud Environments For Machine Learning, Lucas D. Hall May 2022

Hardware Isolation Approach To Securely Use Untrusted Gpus In Cloud Environments For Machine Learning, Lucas D. Hall

Theses and Dissertations

Machine Learning (ML) is now a primary method for getting useful information out of the immense volumes of data being generated and stored in society today. Useful data is a commodity for training ML models and those that need data for training are often not the owners of the data leading to a desire to use cloud-based services. Deep learning algorithms are best suited to run on a graphical processing unit (GPU) which presents a specific problem since the GPU is not a secure or trusted piece of hardware in the cloud computing environment.

In this paper, we will analyze …

Linkbreaker: Breaking The Backdoor-Trigger Link In Dnns Via Neurons Consistency Check, Zhenzhu Chen, Shang Wang, Anmin Fu, Yansong Gao, Shui Yu, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Backdoor attacks cause model misbehaving by first implanting backdoors in deep neural networks (DNNs) during training and then activating the backdoor via samples with triggers during inference. The compromised models could pose serious security risks to artificial intelligence systems, such as misidentifying 'stop' traffic sign into '80km/h'. In this paper, we investigate the connection characteristic between the backdoor and the trigger in DNNs and observe the fact that the backdoor is implanted via establishing a link between a cluster of neurons, representing the backdoor, and the triggers. Based on this observation, we design LinkBreaker, a new generic scheme for defending …

The Symptom Of Ethics: Rethinking Ethics In The Face Of The Machine, David J. Gunkel Apr 2022

The Symptom Of Ethics: Rethinking Ethics In The Face Of The Machine, David J. Gunkel

Human-Machine Communication

This essay argues that it is the machine that constitutes the symptom of ethics— “symptom” understood as that excluded “part that has no part” in the system of moral consideration. Ethics, which has been historically organized around a human or at least biological subject, needs the machine to define the proper limits of the moral community even if it simultaneously excludes such mechanisms from any serious claim on moral consideration. The argument will proceed in five steps or movements. The first part will define and characterize “the symptom” as it has been operationalized in the work of Slovenian philosopher Slavoj …

Towards Efficient Lifelong Machine Learning In Deep Neural Networks, Tyler L. Hayes Mar 2022

Towards Efficient Lifelong Machine Learning In Deep Neural Networks, Tyler L. Hayes

Theses

Humans continually learn and adapt to new knowledge and environments throughout their lifetimes. Rarely does learning new information cause humans to catastrophically forget previous knowledge. While deep neural networks (DNNs) now rival human performance on several supervised machine perception tasks, when updated on changing data distributions, they catastrophically forget previous knowledge. Enabling DNNs to learn new information over time opens the door for new applications such as self-driving cars that adapt to seasonal changes or smartphones that adapt to changing user preferences. In this dissertation, we propose new methods and experimental paradigms for efficiently training continual DNNs without forgetting. We …

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Artificial agents such as robots, chatbots, and artificial intelligence systems can be the perpetrators of a range of moral violations traditionally limited to human actors. This paper explores how people perceive the same moral violations differently for artificial agent and human perpetrators by addressing three research questions: How wrong are moral foundation violations by artificial agents compared to human perpetrators? Which moral foundations do artificial agents violate compared to human perpetrators? What leads to increased blame for moral foundation violations by artificial agents compared to human perpetrators? We adapt 18 human-perpetrated moral violation scenarios that differ by the moral foundation …

Performance Of Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems With Applications In Combined Arms, Robert J. Wilson Mar 2022

Performance Of Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems With Applications In Combined Arms, Robert J. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Multi-agent systems show great potential for solving problems in complex and dynamic domains. Such systems comprise multiple individual entities called agents. Agents possessing the same behavior or physical form are called homogeneous while agents which differ in these respects are termed heterogeneous. The overall behavior of the system emerges from the many interactions of its component agents. Most multi-agent systems research to date focuses on systems of homogeneous agents, but recent work suggests that heterogeneous agents may improve system performance in certain tasks. This research examines the impact of heterogeneity on multi-agent system effectiveness and investigates the application of multi-agent …
