Representation And Appropriation In Guamán Poma De Ayala, Julio Ortega, Philip Debenshire Dec 2013

Representation And Appropriation In Guamán Poma De Ayala, Julio Ortega, Philip Debenshire

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

By discussing the cultural role of iconography, this article explores the likely source of representations in Felipe Guaman Pomade Ayala's The First New Chronicle and Good Government. His process of appropriation serves as a model of the new Andean cultural production by showcasing how emblematic allegories have been used in Latin America to illustrate Colonial manuscripts as well as national emblems and public art.

Where Feet Are As Light As Feathers (A World Of Things), Katie Zickefoose May 2013

Where Feet Are As Light As Feathers (A World Of Things), Katie Zickefoose

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Where feet are as light as feathers (a world of things) is a combination of 2D work including painting, drawing, and prints, in conjunction with a written monograph that supports and gives insight into the work. Through a series of short stories, both fictional and nonfictional, fleeting thoughts, as well as research in critical theory and art history, I make connections between my art, my process, and my own earthly living.

Art Spiegelman's Maus As A Heteroglossic Text, Dane H. Minich Jan 2013

Art Spiegelman's Maus As A Heteroglossic Text, Dane H. Minich

ETD Archive

According to philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin, the modernist novel is the best literary form to exploit heteroglossia, or the coexistence of two or more voices within a text. It incorporates the speeches of the author, narrators, and characters, as well as languages that are indicative of social status, employment, epochs, and so on. In this essay, heteroglossia is applied to Art Spiegelman's graphic novel Maus to demonstrate that the comics medium is also a prime candidate for heteroglossic exploitation. Voice and dialect are examined in the first portion of the essay, including generational differences between the characters' language, the presence and …

Art As A Catalyst For Resilience: Women Artists With A Life-Threatening Illness, Susan Firestone Jan 2013

Art As A Catalyst For Resilience: Women Artists With A Life-Threatening Illness, Susan Firestone

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This phenomenological inquiry focused on the experiences of 12 professional women artists diagnosed with major medical illnesses, mostly cancer. Data from three in-‐depth interviews with each participant indicated that their beliefs, personal strengths, learned skills, and lived experiences were fundamental to their commitment to art as a way of life. The overarching question of whether long-‐term involvement in creative practices acted as a catalyst for resilience during and after treatments became the seminal exploration in this study. Data analysis used methods for qualitative research devised by Moustakas (1994), Giorgi (1985), and Forinash (2012), and a conversational approach in interviews suggested …

Show Me The Semiosis: Grounding Post Structural Theory In Physiological Experience, Michael T. Arrigo Oct 2012

Show Me The Semiosis: Grounding Post Structural Theory In Physiological Experience, Michael T. Arrigo

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

Most of my art students experience a very down to earth epistemological relationship to the world. There is what there is. Middle America is a land of dualisms: matter and spirit, mind and body, good and evil. In this uncluttered black and white world, post-structural theory seemingly has little to offer but a range of unnecessary and unattractive grays. This presentation describes how I overcome my students’ resistance to intellectualizing perception and art making. I use a physiological perspective that grounds students’ investigation of art and meaning in an investigation of themselves, their bodies, their perceptual responses, emotional reactions and …

Specimen, Mary Richardson Jul 2012

Specimen, Mary Richardson

Theses

Ideas of human interaction and levels of physical construction touched upon in geometry and physics have saturated my practice for many years. Having come from a small town in Virginia and moving to a big city like Chicago, I was confronted with massive amounts of people, ideas, cultures, and stimuli of which I had never before conceived. I realized that how we interact as people is a similar dynamic found in molecular interaction. This same interaction takes place in celestial formation, plant growth, decomposition, and even emotion. As I came to terms with my own presence in the world, my …

Three Rivers As Transitional Zone: Considering A Collective Metanarrative In Pueblo Prehistory, Heather Kline Jul 2012

Three Rivers As Transitional Zone: Considering A Collective Metanarrative In Pueblo Prehistory, Heather Kline

Art & Art History ETDs

The Three Rivers petroglyph site in what is presently south central New Mexico represents important concepts for the study of southwestern prehistory. This site has been studied to a limited degree from the perspective of archaeological site surveys that have categorically classified the motifs represented on the petroglyphs, but at this point very little is known about the cultures that lived and created art in the Three Rivers area. The iconography of these images is remarkably similar to that represented on ceramics at both Mimbres during the Classic period (ca. AD 1000-1150), as well as Casas Grandes during the Medio …

Can Design Thinking Have A Social Life Through Networking?, Brenda Duggan Feb 2012

Can Design Thinking Have A Social Life Through Networking?, Brenda Duggan

Articles

‘The design process is best described metaphorically as a system of spaces rather than a predefined series of orderly steps. The steps demarcate different sorts of related activities that together form a continuum of innovation’. (Brown, 2008, 4) This paper addresses two different spaces for examining design thinking — the design research notebook and the digital space, the topic-driven blog. The premise for this paper arises from teaching digital media on a visual communication programme. I wanted to ask the question from my perspective as an educator — if the individual research notebook is a convention or vehicle for design …

Art As Method: Complicating Tales Of Visual Stenography And Implications For Urban Education And Research, Vanessa M. Jones Jan 2012

Art As Method: Complicating Tales Of Visual Stenography And Implications For Urban Education And Research, Vanessa M. Jones

ETD Archive

How Black artists-othered and positioned at the margins of "civilization" in the United States-construct knowledge, context, and historical memory is informative to urban education research and policy. The exploration of this reflects the wisdom of an African proverb that others will tell the story of the struggle should it not first be told by those who live it. To create reciprocity between participants and the researcher, this study employed participatory methods and critical analysis of data from interview sessions, observation, works of art, journal reflections, and information from existing studies and artist documentaries. The study uncovers an approach to the …

Creative Consciousness: Becoming A Reflective Designer, Renessa Ciampa Brewer May 2011

Creative Consciousness: Becoming A Reflective Designer, Renessa Ciampa Brewer

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

As a graphic designer, I was drawn to the CCT Program in part because I desired to strengthen my thinking skills as a creative professional. Through being reflective, I aimed to “get more in touch” with my process to better understand it and see how I might improve my approaches. Scholarship on reflective practice in design education and design practice is a growing body of literature, which inspired this synthesis project. This paper looks at Schön’s theories of reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action, models for reflection in the design process provided by Ellmers, Brown, and Bennett, and Reymen, and various reflective practice …

Altered Spatial Frequency Content In Paintings By Artists With Schizophrenia, Daniel Graham, Ming Meng Feb 2011

Altered Spatial Frequency Content In Paintings By Artists With Schizophrenia, Daniel Graham, Ming Meng

Dartmouth Scholarship

While it is difficult to imagine the way someone with mental illness perceives the world, paintings produced by mental illness sufferers with artistic talents offer a hint of this experience. Here we analyze these images in terms of statistics related to low-level visual processing. It is known that art in general possesses regular spatial frequency amplitude spectra, probably due to factors including luminance compression, approximation of natural scene spatial statistics, media, and aesthetics. Whatever the contributions of those factors may be, would the same ones apply for artists with schizophrenia? We find that spatial frequency content in paintings by five …

Designing Graphic Design History: Teaching For The 21st Century Classroom, Phillip Peter Winfield Jan 2011

Designing Graphic Design History: Teaching For The 21st Century Classroom, Phillip Peter Winfield

LSU Master's Theses

Designing Graphic Design History: Teaching for the 21st Century Classroom undertakes the development of a web-based Graphic Design History interactive timeline (GDHit), intended as a user-generated online database for potentially all graphic design enthusiasts, but specifically faculty and students within the traditional graphic design history course. GDHit seeks to continue the implementation of new media and emerging digital technologies in a traditional, lecture-oriented environment by inviting the user (or audience) to contribute the content for the timeline, while fostering new forms of course engagement for students in this digital age. In keeping with the tenets of the digital age and …

Advanced Studies In The Graphic Novel, Thomas Barkman May 2010

Advanced Studies In The Graphic Novel, Thomas Barkman

Senior Honors Projects

Advanced Studies in the Graphic Novel entails a practical intimacy with the form. My work serves to elucidate only some of the many differences between the graphic novel and traditional literature, to complicate the use of written language in the form as it relates to images, to address confrontations with publishing, and to share intimately the process and mechanisms by which my effort functions.

The paper will reveal the guts of the effort (itself a graphic novel) and in doing so will highlight issues as they uniquely relate to the form, and hopefully encourage others to attempt such work. The …

But This Is What I See; This Is What I See: Re-Imagining Gendered Subjectivity Through The Woman Artist In Phelps, Johnstone, And Woolf, Heather Wayne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the publication of Laura Mulvey's influential article 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,' in which she identifies the pervasive presence of the male gaze in Hollywood cinema, scholars have sought to account for the female spectator in her paradigm of gendered vision. This thesis suggests that women writers have long debated the problem of the female spectator through literary depictions of the female artist. Women writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries'including Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Edith Johnstone, and Virginia Woolf'recognized the power of the woman artist to undermine the trope of the male gazing subject and a passive female object. …

The Design Brief: Conceptual Tool For Visual Resolution Of Professional Design Problems, Jason Andrew Neal Dec 2009

The Design Brief: Conceptual Tool For Visual Resolution Of Professional Design Problems, Jason Andrew Neal

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I show how I have integrated the design brief concept with my art philosophy to help guide the exploration and visual resolution of three academic visual projects. The design brief is the most significant project management tool I have added to my design philosophy and production approach during my graduate studies. It has not changed the art I create, but rather has changed how I plan for and manage the production of my art. The brief consists of a series of questions that I can apply to all design decisions to make sure those decisions remain consistent …

Tolerance: Challenge, Perception, And Social Stigmas Defined Through Visual Communications., Ursula Moore Bryant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My explorations and journey through life have led me to discover a connection in my work and responsibility as a visual communicator. My objective of communicating challenge, perception, and social stigmas through informed stories of individual lives is to provoke questions and spark moments of awareness in viewers. With this supporting manuscript, I hope to inform about my motivations through time including my personal, artistic, and historical influences. I will define graphic design as a fine art through the evaluation of artistic movements. I also intend to discuss design as a language and build a case for social awareness. Evaluating …

The Black Death And Its Effect On Fourteenth- And Fifteenth-Century Art, Anna Louise Desormeaux Jan 2007

The Black Death And Its Effect On Fourteenth- And Fifteenth-Century Art, Anna Louise Desormeaux

LSU Master's Theses

In early October of 1347, ships from Caffa docked at the port of Messina in Sicily. The traders brought with them a fierce plague that swept through Europe from 1348 to 1352. This pandemic, which killed approximately half of Europe's population, came to be known as the Black Death. The fear propagated by the spread of the plague and its cyclical recurrence greatly affected the art created in Europe over the next 150 years. Accounts of victims of the plague and other contemporary documents, such as medical treatises, give modern readers a glimpse into the psyche of medieval people. These …

Outside Inside Out: Perspectives On Social Anxiety, Kevin Andrew Hagan Jan 2007

Outside Inside Out: Perspectives On Social Anxiety, Kevin Andrew Hagan

LSU Master's Theses

“Outside Inside Out” is a study of how the visual perspective of an installation design can be used to create interaction, animation, and multiple messages. Traditionally, graphic designers have tended to present their messages either as flat printed materials, such as newspapers and billboards, or as videos/animations on television and the Internet. While both of these mediums provide an adequate means to convey a message, they fall short in presenting information to the audience in a non-obtrusive, interactive form. By using a technique I developed called “Passive Interactivity,” designers can use a viewer’s visual perspective to create interaction, animation, and …

Sweet! Cartoons And Contemporary Painting, Sarah Atlee Aug 2006

Sweet! Cartoons And Contemporary Painting, Sarah Atlee

Theses

I am an artist, and I use cartoons. My work consists mainly of images that communicate to the viewer through recognizable forms. I also use text to help tell my stories. I often create visual elements that function in place of text or information. I use a third visual tool, a hybrid descendant of images and words: the cartoon. Cartoons, once situated at the margins of visual discourse, now have a place in the fine art world. There are comics and animated television shows created for adult audiences. There are gallery and museum shows of work influenced by cartoons, not …

Judith Dinham: An Artistic Journey, Judith Dinham Jan 2006

Judith Dinham: An Artistic Journey, Judith Dinham

Research outputs pre 2011

STUDENTS AND TEACHERS of secondary and tertiary visual arts studies will find this book of immense value. It is a unique resource in that it brings together, in a single work, a wide variety of primary texts focused on a single artist. To gather such a diverse range of material on any single artist would require months of research. The book serves multiple functions: it is at one level a history of a very fine artist, Judith Dinham, in another sense it is a history of a period of the development of a specific research trajectory. It maps the artist's …

Art Informing Science Education: The Potential Contributions Of Ornithological Illustration To Ecology Education, Vanessa Hunt Jan 2006

Art Informing Science Education: The Potential Contributions Of Ornithological Illustration To Ecology Education, Vanessa Hunt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Birds serve as an excellent group of organisms from which to introduce the study of ecology, being of inherent aesthetic interest to many otherwise uninterested in science, and are also ubiquitous in the immediate environment of many students. By extension, images of birds might serve as a valuable resource for the ecology educator, and bird artists – as a subset of ecologists - might provide useful models for expertise in ecology. This study examines the potential contributions of bird artists and bird art to education in ecology at the high school and college level. Eight contemporary bird artists were interviewed …
