Purrysburg, An Archaeological Survey, Larry Lepionka
Purrysburg, An Archaeological Survey, Larry Lepionka
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
An archaeological reconnaissance of the colonial site of Purrysburg, on the Savannah River in Jasper County, South Carolina, has been conducted intermittently through the year 1979, with the goal of locating structural or other artifactual remains of the original Swiss settlement established here in 1733. Work was restricted to a surface search with only limited subsurface testing. Brick outcroppings occurred at various locations but their date could not be ascertained without extensive excavation. Artifact scatters including datable ceramics were common and suggest a peak in occupation between 1790 and 1820, well after the initial Swiss settlement. Early and middle 18th …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Archeological assessments at Sites 41GL57 and 41GL91 in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area are described in this report prepared by Steven M. Kotter and Linda A. Nance . Sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, these assessments represent an excellent example of sensitivity to cultural resources during the planning stages of development designed to enhance visitor utilization and appreciation of Enchanted Rock.
Significant findings at Site 41GL57 include the identification of specific areas of intact prehistoric deposits which yielded artifacts of the Late Archaic and Late Prehistoric periods. Methods to achieve compatibility of development plans with the preservation of …

An Examination Of Prehistoric Human Remains At The Victoria Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, Victoria County, Texas, Daniel Potter, Lee Spencer
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
On June 9, 1980, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, investigated a reported discovery of human bones where construction is underway at the Victoria Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, Victoria, Texas.
The Center was informed of the discovery by David Welsh of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, who requested that an investigation be made by qualified persons to assess the bone material and immediate surrounding for the purpose of determining the potential importance of the cultural resource.
The field investigations were carried out by Daniel Potter, Lee Spencer, and Robert Scott, all of whom …

In May 1980, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out an archaeological survey of the proposed route of an eight-inch pipeline to be installed by the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company. The pipeline will extend from the Scurlock Oil Company tank farm about one kilometer southwest of Sabine Pass to a landfall on the Gulf Coast at a point about six kilometers west of Texas Point (Fig. 1).
The survey was done under contract between the Center for Archaeological Research and the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company (Independent Contractor-Letter Agreement of May 1980). The fieldwork …

Archaeological Testing Of Sites 41tg114, 41tg115, And 41tg116 Tom Green, Texas, Wayne C. Young
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During September 1980, archaeological sites 41TG114, 41TG115, and 41TG116 were tested for prehistoric cultural debris to determine their size, depth, cultural affiliations, and archaeological significance. Testing was conducted by the Archaeology Section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation under the Procedures for the Protection of Cultural and Historic Properties (36 C.F.R., Part 800).
Testing results indicate that these sites contain very little cultural debris or intact stratigraphic deposits. Sites 41TG114 and 41TG116 appear to represent very minor surface campsites. Site 41TG115 appears to represent a deflated site with materials mixed on the present ground surface. No further …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The papers published in this volume represent contributions from professional archaeologists, avocational archaeologists, and students. Many aspects of coastal archaeology are unknown, and there is a great need for data-oriented papers, site reports, reviews of specific aboriginal technologies, and for other papers dealing with certain facets of the prehistoric and historic archaeology of the coastal zone.

This monograph is the second in the series of data-oriented reports resulting from the archaeological and ethnohistorical investigations centered on the Spanish mission complex near the modern town of Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico. Dr. Felix D. Almaraz of The University of Texas at San Antonio has now prepared two of the volumes in the series, of which this is the second. His translation of the 1772 mission inventories of San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo should be of considerable value to those interested in the Spanish Colonial history of northern Mexico and Texas.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In March 1977, excavations were conducted in front of Alamo Shrine where flagstone paving was being replaced by the City of San Antonio. The subsurface investigations sampled and described the soil stratigraphy which has accumulated through 2.5 centuries of occupation. The distinctive soil levels contained datable cultural materials which relate to some of the major events which took place from the earliest settlement of Mission San Antonio de Valero through subsequent periods of Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-Texan occupations. The artifact collections have provided additional information on the material culture of the different ethnic and cultural groups to occupy the Alamo. …

Two Sites In Uvalde County: The Elm Creek Site (41 Uv 67), Wayne C. Young
Documents from the Texas State Department of Highways-Archive
Site 41 UV 67 represented a shallow and mixed multicomponent prehistoric campsite on an intermittent drainage in eastern Uvalde County, Texas. A possible living floor was located during testing of the site. This floor contained two hearths and four possible postholes in a mixed context with prehistoric artifacts of differing temporal periods and modern historic trash. Due to the badly mixed nature of the deposits and the lack of cultural integrity, the excavation was discontinued.
