Evaluating Ancient Volcanic Disaster In The Río Grande De Chone, Manabí, Ecuador, Corey Alexander Herrmann Jan 2025

Evaluating Ancient Volcanic Disaster In The Río Grande De Chone, Manabí, Ecuador, Corey Alexander Herrmann

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Across the world, disasters are increasing in their frequency and in their intensity. This is due to a confluence of factors social (like modern development and population growth) and “natural” (such as the inputs of anthropogenic climate change). Social scientists in anthropology are pursuing the field of disaster anthropology to explore these shifting trends and investigate the human response to disasters today. Archaeologists, in turn, have focused instead on exploring disaster more concretely through identifying exposure to particular hazards, leaving deeper questions of the social character behind disaster processes relatively undertheorized.

Archaeologists working in South America have been quite attuned …

Silent Testimonies: The Global Evolution Of Grave Marker Art And Meaning, Erik Culley Jan 2025

Silent Testimonies: The Global Evolution Of Grave Marker Art And Meaning, Erik Culley

Bakerman Student Research Awards

Grave markers are more than simple memorials; they are meaningful cultural objects that reflect how societies understand death, identity, belief, class, and community values. The size, material, decoration, and inscriptions of gravestones change over time in response to economic conditions, religious beliefs, social structures, and consumer culture. By studying grave markers across different regions and historical periods—such as early modern Europe, nineteenth-century Germany, and immigrant cemeteries in Australia—archaeologists can trace broader cultural transformations. Research shows that the rise of external grave markers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was closely tied to increased material consumption and a growing emphasis on …

Archaeological Survey And Testing At Site 38bu1834, United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, Chester B. Depratter, James B. Legg, Heathley A. Johnson Jan 2025

Archaeological Survey And Testing At Site 38bu1834, United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, Chester B. Depratter, James B. Legg, Heathley A. Johnson

Research Manuscript Series

This report covers the archaeological investigations at site 38BU1834, which falls within the boundary of the Charlesfort/Santa Elena National Historic Landmark on Parris Island, South Carolina. Initial investigations involved a search for activity areas associated with the Spanish pottery kiln discovered in 1993 near the golf course clubhouse. Later work on the site focused on a pond or sinkhole containing a deposit of World War I era U. S. Marine Corps trash and the prehistoric period earth and shell mounds that line the periphery of the pond/sinkhole.

Mansiones: A New Look At Mansio Archaeology In Light Of San Miceli And Household Archaeology, Christopher Randall Chadwick Jan 2025

Mansiones: A New Look At Mansio Archaeology In Light Of San Miceli And Household Archaeology, Christopher Randall Chadwick

Dissertations

Problem

The identification of mansiones in the archaeological record has proven difficult, if not impossible. One factor contributing to the problem has been focusing on typological and descriptive studies in order to identify the functional characteristics of mansiones. Another has been the lack of any explicit method and theory for interpreting the functional characteristics of the archaeological data related to mansiones. Both of these factors have been observed in the recent excavations at San Miceli.

Method

Due to the functional nature of mansiones, there is a need to reevaluate current paradigms for interpreting the archaeological data related to mansiones. One …

A Comparative Analysis Of Figurines From The Lower Rio Verde Valley From Oaxaca, Raynaliz C. Velazquez Jan 2025

A Comparative Analysis Of Figurines From The Lower Rio Verde Valley From Oaxaca, Raynaliz C. Velazquez

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

This thesis investigates 618 ceramic figurines from the Lower Río Verde Valley in Oaxaca, Mexico, to explore how figurine use varied across civic-ceremonial, domestic, and outlying contexts during the Terminal Formative and Late Classic periods. The central hypothesis proposes that figurines from the Río Viejo Acropolis, a civic-ceremonial center, would be larger and exhibit greater labor investment than those from residential and peripheral sites, reflecting more labor-intensive ideologies and ceremonial practices. Through typological, spatial, and material analysis, the study examines attributes such as size, surface treatment, production method, and the presence of musical elements. The dataset includes newly analyzed figurines …

A Peculiar Decoration: Production, Exchange, And Access To Usulután Pottery In The Late And Terminal Formative Southern Maya Region, Caitlin Reddington Davis Jan 2025

A Peculiar Decoration: Production, Exchange, And Access To Usulután Pottery In The Late And Terminal Formative Southern Maya Region, Caitlin Reddington Davis

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Usulután is a pottery style featuring a bichromatic design in the form of parallel lines and blotches, often in yellow and orange colors. Although it is often associated with El Salvador, pottery in this style is commonly found across Southern Mesoamerica during the Formative period. During the Late and Terminal Formative periods (300 BCE - 200 CE) an intensive network of competitive city-states developed in the Southern Maya Region, including the Guatemalan Highlands, Pacific Slope, and Western El Salvador. Despite the abundance of Usulután pottery in the archaeological record of these cities, there has never been a study focused on …

The Cotzumalhuapa Obsidian System: Economy Of Procurement, Production, And Provisioning In A Classic Mesoamerican Polity, David Rafael Mccormick Alcorta Jan 2025

The Cotzumalhuapa Obsidian System: Economy Of Procurement, Production, And Provisioning In A Classic Mesoamerican Polity, David Rafael Mccormick Alcorta

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation expands scholarly modeling of pre-contact economic organization in Mesoamerica through an in-depth examination of obsidian systems of Cotzumalhuapa, an important polity during the Late-Terminal Classic (650-950 CE) in Escuintla, Guatemala. The exchange of obsidian into the region from several sources was critical because other types of tool-grade stone were locally unavailable. Overtime, sophisticated systems developed to mine, transform, and move obsidian in a variety of forms across the landscape. Technological changes in manufacturing processes led to universal adoption of prismatic blades and fomented the importance of lithic artisans specializing in core-blade reduction. Access to obsidian to produce tools …
