Racial Discrimination, Social Support, And Perceived Qualification Differences: Analyzing The Impacts On Work-Related Stress And The Mental Health Of Black Women, Nyasha Chikwinya, Cayla Johnson
2025 Honors College Research Symposium
Through this study, this research looks at how racial discrimination at work that is perceived, has impacts on the mental health of Black women. We tend to focus on major issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression. The main ideas we will be exploring include: 1. Facing racial discrimination at work is stressful. Black women who deal with this can experience more psychological stress, 2. Having access to a support system or mentorship at work can help lessen the bad effects of work-related stress on Black women's health, and 3. When Black women see themselves as inferior to their white …

Racial Discrimination, Social Support, And Perceived Qualification Differences: Analyzing The Impacts On Work-Related Stress And The Mental Health Of Black Women, Cayla Johnson, Nyasha Chikwinya
2025 Honors College Research Symposium
Prior research indicates that racial discrimination greatly affects the mental well-being of Black women in their jobs (Berdahl and Moore, 2006). This matter is vital since the compounded impacts of racial discrimination can intensify job-related stress and lead to persistent mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression (Holder et al, 2015). We propose a study examining how racial discrimination at work is perceived and how it impacts mental health of Black women. Specifically, we hypothesize: H1. Black women who deal with racial discrimination can experience more psychological stress. H2. Having access to a support system or mentorship at work …

Assessing The Association Between Attentional Bias To Climate Change Images And Climate Anxiety, Abby R. Morley
All NMU Master's Theses
Recent research has shown that people with high trait anxiety fixate on images with higher levels of threat when in an anxious state. Climate change is a massive and timely problem with changes in the temperature of oceans and precipitation as well as warming of the Earth. These impacts can lead to climate anxiety. This project aimed to extend previous research regarding attentional bias and anxiety by assessing the relationship between attentional bias and climate change anxiety. Participants completed an eye-tracking task where they were asked to view climate change relevant images paired with climate irrelevant images. Participants then completed …
Effects Of Acute Stress On Executive Functions In Depression, Generalised Anxiety And Borderline Personality Disorder, T. M. Scott, Joanne M. Dickson
Effects Of Acute Stress On Executive Functions In Depression, Generalised Anxiety And Borderline Personality Disorder, T. M. Scott, Joanne M. Dickson
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Acute stress adaptively alters executive functions (EFs) essential for emotion regulation. Emerging systems of psychiatric classification, such as the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) and the Research Domain Criteria, emphasise the underlying mechanisms and dimensional nature of psychopathology. Distress disorders—a subfactor within the HiTOP model including major depressive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder—are characterised by altered stress reactivity, impaired emotion regulation, and modest responsiveness to first-line psychotherapies. This systematic review sought to examine whether distress disorders and their related symptoms confer heightened vulnerability to transient EF impairment under conditions of acute stress. Methods: A comprehensive search …

Commentary: Caring About Caregivers And The Importance Of Refining Methodology In Caregiver-Focused Studies, Johanna Michlig, Astrida S. Kaugars
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Significant progress has been made in advancing caregiver wellbeing research and clinical application in the last decade (Salley et al., 2024). This commentary on the work of Badovinac et al. (2024) will highlight the importance of more comprehensively examining context in caregiver responses. Caregivers live within the push and pull between social and family demands, and it is vital to expand our view to gain a more comprehensive understanding of their experience. Consequently, the methodology of future studies with caregivers must reflect those demands and complexities.

More specifically, it addressed if veteran status modifies the association between anxiety and suicidal ideation, if marital status modifies the association between mental health care access and suicidal ideation, and if veteran status modifies the association between sexual orientation and suicidal ideation after controlling for age, gender, …
Protracting The Immediate: Time As Form In Contemporary Horror, Kennedy Kelley
Protracting The Immediate: Time As Form In Contemporary Horror, Kennedy Kelley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the expression and experience of temporality in horror films of the last decade. Whereas early twenty-first century horror was characterized by high-octane jump scares, current horror is marked by contemplative slowness. I argue that the elongated duration of recent horror extends an experience of indeterminate anxiety that attunes us to an expansive relationality, offering a corrective not only to contemporary logics of immediacy, but also to the frequently constricting nature of embodiment as a theoretical concept. Recent horror scholarship tends to center sensuous propinquity in response to a long history of gaze theory’s disembodied passivity. While these …

Navigating Emotional Landscapes: A Black Woman's Perspectives, Nasya T. Jasper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Black women exist in a unique positionality and their experiences with depression and anxiety are shaped by distinctive structural factors. However, their experiences are often overlooked in sociological research and more broadly in academic/medical research. This study investigates the ways Black women are framing their experiences with depression and anxiety on Tiktok and Instagram. I conduct a qualitative study through a social media content analysis grounded in Black feminist thought and narrative analysis. This research is not only academic for me, but deeply personal, as I seek to amplify the voices of women whose struggles often go unrecognized. The findings …

Keloids, characterized by excessive collagen deposition resulting in raised and often painful scars, profoundly affect the psychosocial well-being of adolescents, leading to anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal during a critical period of identity formation. Current literature highlights these challenges but lacks comprehensive management strategies within dermatological practice. This review identifies the need for integrated care models that combine clinical treatment with mental health support, including routine psychosocial screening, immediate counseling referrals, and adolescent-specific education programs on keloid management and emotional coping. Training dermatologists to recognize psychological distress and adopt compassionate communication is essential. Collaborative research should focus on evaluating these …

The study of brain connectivity, both functional and structural, can inform us on the development of psychopathology. The use of multimodal MRI methods allows us to study associations between structural and functional connectivity, and how this relates to psychopathology. This may be especially useful during childhood and adolescence, a period where most forms of psychopathology manifest for the first time. The current paper explores structure-function coupling, measured through diffusion and resting-state functional MRI, and quantified as the correlation between structural and functional connectivity matrices. We investigate associations between psychopathology and coupling in a transdiagnostic group of adolescents, including many treatment-seeking …

Mental health challenges, such as anxiety and depression affect millions of Americans daily. While traditional treatments such as medication are effective, researchers are searching for other methods to combat the symptoms these conditions. Exercise has been that solution for researchers. Physical exercise provides a free and natural way to decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression. In as little as 30 minutes the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters in the body will make the body feel happy and relaxed. This takes away the feelings of worry and sadness one experiences when dealing with anxiety and depression. Incorporating exercise into one’s daily …
