Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Induction On Death-Related Anxiety, David Matthew Schultz
Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Induction On Death-Related Anxiety, David Matthew Schultz
Master's Theses
Terror management theory postulates that the behavior and beliefs of individuals are influenced on some level by an underlying aversion to death. Mortality salience, the conscious awareness of one’s own impending death, creates behavioral changes in individuals compared to non-mortality salient individuals. These changes in behavior are referred to as distal and proximal defense mechanisms. Relatively little research has investigated mechanisms to buffer effects of mortality salience. Mindfulness refers to a conscious awareness and acceptance of moment-to-moment experiences. By allowing individuals to take a regulated view of difficult situations, mindfulness may attenuate the negative effects of mortality salience. The present …
Utilizing Act Daily As A Self-Guided Mobile App Intervention For Depression And Anxiety In A College Counseling Center, Jack A. Haeger
Utilizing Act Daily As A Self-Guided Mobile App Intervention For Depression And Anxiety In A College Counseling Center, Jack A. Haeger
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
College counseling centers (CCCs) have experienced funding and staffing setbacks in recent years, resulting in higher caseloads, counselor burnout, and bloated waitlists. Mobile Health (mHealth) interventions may offer a cost-effective and innovative solution. The authors developed ACT Daily, a prototype mHealth app based in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This study examined the feasibility and possible efficacy of ACT Daily as a brief intervention for individuals placed on CCC waitlists.
A sample of 11 depressed/anxious clients waitlisted at a local CCC enrolled in the study, which followed a pre-post, open trial design. Participants received a brief online training that covered …

Illustrations Of Child Anxiety, Erica G. O'Connell
Senior Honors Projects
I have found through my experience at The University of Rhode Island that two things are lacking; attention to the arts, and conversation about mental illness. Books are not only used as an educational tool for literacy among children but also as a way to introduce challenging topics. Combining my two majors, Art and Psychology, I aimed to create a real life tool that exposes children to the topic of mental health. The targeted age group for this book is between 4 through 6 years. By introducing this conversation to children at an appropriate level of learning, my hope is …
Mindset Matters: Measuring Anxiety Mindsets, Jillian S. Merrick
Mindset Matters: Measuring Anxiety Mindsets, Jillian S. Merrick
Psychology Honors Projects
Considerable research supports Dweck’s (2006) theory of mindsets, yet few researchers have studied mental health mindset. The current study explores this link through developing a measure that applies Dweck’s dimensions of fixed vs. growth mindset to appraisals of anxiety while also assessing beliefs about strategies for managing anxiety. In Studies 1-4, we develop this measure and report the correlations among the four scales - Fixed, Growth, Acceptance, and Change - as well as the correlations between these scales and various measures of wellbeing in both undergraduate and high school samples. Study 5 builds on and extends this research by using …

Multisensory Issues In Students With Autism: A Meta-Synthesis, Michelle Lindsey Chambless
Multisensory Issues In Students With Autism: A Meta-Synthesis, Michelle Lindsey Chambless
Special Education Masters Program Theses
For students with autism sensory processing issues are not an uncommon experience. There are three types of sensory processing categories. They are sensory under responsiveness, sensory over-responsiveness and sensory seeking. These sensory processing difficulties may affect social communication, impact daily life skills, include self-injurious behaviors, and create or add to anxiety already being felt by autistic students. These categories are not mutually exclusive and some students may experience all of these problems while others may only struggle with one or two. There is no one answer for students with autism but it is a collection of effects that form the …
Anxiety In College Students: Implications From The Ccmh Database, Payton Jones, G. Tyler Lefevor
Anxiety In College Students: Implications From The Ccmh Database, Payton Jones, G. Tyler Lefevor
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
In 2013, an unprecedented 12.4% of college students were diagnosed or received treatment for an anxiety disorder. Using the Collegiate Center for Mental Health (CCMH) database, which includes data from over 140 university counseling centers, we analyzed covariates of anxiety concerns and the implications of these findings. We found that academic and financial concerns correlate highly with anxiety in college students, suggesting that the recent increase in college student anxiety may mirror the increases seen in the cost and importance of university education over the last few decades.

The Relationship Between The Poor Parenting In Childhood And Current Adult Symptoms Of Anxiety And Depression: Attachment As A Mediator, Kayla Lynn Burningham
Theses and Dissertations
Both anxiety and depression have been shown to be a result of early negative attachment experiences. The quality of parenting is one variable that affects attachment security, therefore correlating with the development of anxiety and depression in adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of attachment in the relationship between mother and father's parenting in childhood and adult symptoms of anxiety and depression. The study focused on 680 married or remarried heterosexual couples that took the RELATE questionnaire between 2011 and 2013. Results indicated insecure attachment mediates the relationship between poor parenting and symptoms of …

Peer Mentoring During Hospital Practicum To Reduce Anxiety In The First Semester Clinical Nursing Student, Danielle Katherine Walker
Peer Mentoring During Hospital Practicum To Reduce Anxiety In The First Semester Clinical Nursing Student, Danielle Katherine Walker
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on Saturday, April 9, 2016:
The clinical setting, an important aspect of nurses' educational experiences, can be anxiety producing. Literature supports that while anxiety in small quantities is a desirable experience in learning, too high a level of stress can decrease learning (Audet, 1995; Blainey, 1980; Yerkes & Dodson, 1908). It is widely accepted that clinical education is anxiety producing for nursing students and first time nursing students experience even more severe anxiety in the clinical setting (Audet, 1995; Kleehammer et al., 1990). Decreasing students anxiety related to first time clinical experiences may improve students' ability to learn …

Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on Sunday, November 8, 2015:
When students enter the junior year of this program, they begin their clinical experiences. At this time, faculty requests they begin to "draw on previous course & put it all together". Many students have difficulty making the transition from theory laden course to "real nursing courses". This transition to junior level nursing courses in conjunction with high stake testing often results in high levels of anxiety in the students. This anxiety is palpable in the nursing building & increases prior to testing times. Although the students are aware of their anxiety, sometimes it …

Predicting Anxiety Using Measures Of Negative Interpretation Bias In Clinically Anxious Youth: A Pilot Study, Jamie A. Mash
Predicting Anxiety Using Measures Of Negative Interpretation Bias In Clinically Anxious Youth: A Pilot Study, Jamie A. Mash
Open Access Theses
Negative interpretation bias is defined as an individual’s tendency to interpret ambiguous events in the environment as negative or threatening (Beard, 2011; Beard & Amir, 2009; Miers, Blote, Bogels, & Westenberg, 2008; Muris & Field, 2008; Rozenman, Amir, & Weersing, 2014). A heightened negative interpretation bias predicts high levels of trait anxiety and clinical levels of anxiety in adults and youth (Amin, Foa, & Coles, 1998; Amir, Prouvost, & Kuckertz, 2012; Muris & Field, 2008). Understanding the psychopathology of anxiety disorders through a lens of underlying information processing biases, including interpretation biases, can allow researchers to take a mechanistic approach …

Repeated Low-Dose Organophosphate Dfp Exposure Leads To The Development Of Depression And Cognitive Impairment In A Rat Model Of Gulf War Illness, Laxmikant Deshpande, Kristin Phillips
Neurology Publications
Approximately 175,000 to 250,000 of the returning veterans from the 1991 Persian Gulf War exhibit chronic multi-symptom illnesses that includes neurologic co-morbidities such as depression, anxiety and cognitive impairments. Amongst a host of causative factors, exposure to low levels of the nerve agent Sarin has been strongly implicated for expression of Gulf War Illness (GWI). Nerve agents similar to pesticides are organophosphate (OP) compounds. There is evidence from civilian population that exposure to OPs such as in agricultural workers and nerve agents such as the survivors and first-responders of the Tokyo subway Sarin gas attack suffer from chronic neurological problems …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) usage has increased throughout the years, as many people are becoming interested in using less conventional interventions for common illnesses. As a whole, CAM encompasses any practice used to treat an illness or disorder that does not fall under the category of traditional medicine. CAM interventions not only treat the physical aspects of health, but as clinicians are beginning to realize, these interventions may also be effective in treating psychological problems, most notably anxiety and depression. This research focused on attitudes toward CAM for psychological disorders. I examined participants’ attitudes about the use of CAM …

The Association Between Exposure To Poverty And Anxiety In Middle Childhood: Examination Of The Modulating Roles Of Coping, Responses To Stress, And Threat Bias Neural Activity, Hannah Bianco
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship between the amount of time spent living in poverty since birth and self-reported symptoms of anxiety in middle childhood. Several models were tested with consideration to the potential modulating roles of coping strategies, responses to stress, and threat bias neural functioning. Exposure to poverty is associated with increased risk for anxiety throughout childhood, adolescence, and into young adulthood (McLoyd, 1998, Najman et al., 2010). Individual factors such as use of various coping strategies and responses to stress, as well as neural processes related to attentional bias toward threat, have been shown to differentially impact risk …
