Zora Neale Hurston: Scientist, Folklorist, Storyteller, Mary Catherine Russell
Zora Neale Hurston: Scientist, Folklorist, Storyteller, Mary Catherine Russell
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
This paper examines the life and work of Zora Neale Hurston and her contribution to American literature in the 20th Century. While previous critical analysis of Hurston’s work has focused primarily on her most popular novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, this paper examines Hurston’s career by taking a holistic approach to the body of her literary works. Hurston’s early career as an anthropologist is shown to provide a foundation for her later interest in folklore. In turn, her connection and participation in the Harlem Renaissance gave Hurston’s writing a nuanced and individualized style as part of the American modernist …

Monks As Model Men: Gender Anomalies Or Heroic Ideal?, Aaron Raverty Osb
Monks As Model Men: Gender Anomalies Or Heroic Ideal?, Aaron Raverty Osb
Saint John’s Abbey Publications
The movie The Mask You Live In portrays gender socialization for men in the United States today as dominated by a trajectory emphasizing ruthless competition, a never-ending search for prestige in material wealth, and a largely self-serving quest to overcome and control women. The movie graphically depicts all the accompanying psychological dysfunction, legal difficulties, and emotional distress experienced by boys and young men desperately trying to conform to such a scripted model of masculinity. Anthropological research invites alternate ways of thinking about the relationship between sex and gender. This is especially true among those who claim a close relationship with …

Supply Chain Theory And Cultural Diversity, P Childerhouse
Supply Chain Theory And Cultural Diversity, P Childerhouse
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
By far the biggest proportion of supply chain theory is bound up within North American and European business settings; hence, its generalizability to culturally diverse global supply chains are investigated. This exploratory research utilizes the anthropological approach of observing supply chain manager behaviour in five distinct natural settings (Egypt, New Zealand, Japan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom). Hofstede’s well-known measures of work-related culture are used to explain the observed manager behaviours. The supply chain theory needs to be tailored to take account of culturally diverse settings, as the optimal local supply chain architecture requires consideration of national, organizational, and individual …
Understanding Culture And Language, Mario R.J. Corbin
Understanding Culture And Language, Mario R.J. Corbin
The ITB Journal
A consequence of human evolution that has had the most profound impact on human nature and human society was the emergence of culture. A term credited uniquely to humans, however over the course of the last century new developments in animal behaviour have been introduced, indicating perhaps that our understanding of culture is too limited, despite there being a vast amount of theoretical approaches to culture. Before we can further attempt to understand whether or not culture can be attributed to animals, we must first closely examine the concept of culture from a human perspective, including a detailed analysis of …

Supplementing Maize Agriculture In Basketmaker Ii Subsistence: Dietary Analysis Of Human Paleofeces From Turkey Pen Ruin (42sa3714), Jenna M. Battillo
Anthropology Theses and Dissertations
This research explores the factors that motivated increasing reliance on maize during the Basketmaker II period in the North American Southwest. Through the analysis of 44 human paleofeces from Turkey Pen Ruin, Utah, I investigate resource choice and nutritional supplementation of maize before the advent of bean horticulture. In order to discern what resources provided caloric and nutritional supplementation to maize, all paleofecal specimens were analyzed for pollen and macrofossil content, and 20 were further sampled for PCR analysis targeted at several select animal and plant species. Eight paleofecal specimens from various stratigraphic layers were directly AMS dated in order …
Soaking In Manhood: (Re)Negotiating Masculinities And Sexualities In The Spas Of Quito, Ecuador, Ronnie Anthony Shepard
Soaking In Manhood: (Re)Negotiating Masculinities And Sexualities In The Spas Of Quito, Ecuador, Ronnie Anthony Shepard
Doctoral Dissertations
In this ethnographic investigation, the narratives of several Ecuadorian males are used to address the current intersections between personal sexual identities and masculinities. The intersections considered often take place within the Ecuadorian spa, an ethnosexual frontier in which heteronormative identities are negotiated against a backdrop of homosocial camaraderie and homoerotic desire. The role of the spa in these negotiations is twofold: it offers a space for men who have sex with men (MSM) to gain culturally requisite sexual experience, and it challenges the stereotypes of MSM as hyper-sexualized by doubling as a homosocial space in which no sexual activity is …

The Off-Season: Masculinities, Rurality, & Family Ties In Alaska Commercial Fishermen, Cruz M. Morey
The Off-Season: Masculinities, Rurality, & Family Ties In Alaska Commercial Fishermen, Cruz M. Morey
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
The purpose of this study is to explore the intersections of masculinity, rurality, the family, and economics through the experiences of commercial fishermen in Alaska. Understanding masculinity as plural and the rural space as a sphere in which individuals operate, this study examines the relationship between the masculine rural and the rural masculine and how it pertains to commercial fishermen. I focus on the discourse already present about Alaska and commercial fishermen and combine this approach with notions of cultural and economic capital, as well as the local ecological knowledge (LEK). The fishermen describe their experiences in the industry as …
Riding In Circles: Horse(Wo)Manship In The American Saddlebred Community, Brianna Meyer
Riding In Circles: Horse(Wo)Manship In The American Saddlebred Community, Brianna Meyer
Celebration of Learning
Not many people know about the very small yet very dynamic sect of intense sport culture of the American Saddlebred show horse. Even those who do could always learn more, since, like any subculture, it constantly evolves and changes through time. This paper outlines the historical changes since the advent of Saddlebred showing with a focus on female involvement and feminist revolution. Gender has been an important but relatively unseen factor within the community itself—female participants today do not know the history of female involvement. But based on an emergence of women professionals and amateurs in the past 50 years, …

Do Non-Human Primates Have Gender?, Aaron Pelchat
Do Non-Human Primates Have Gender?, Aaron Pelchat
Senior Honors Projects
As activism for trans rights and gender equality becomes ever more prevalent in the current American political discourse, so too has there been a rise in questions about gender. Are sexuality and gender linked? Aren’t there only two genders? What is the difference between gender and sex? Is there a difference? How does one DO gender? Isn’t gender just something you are born with? Helping the public understand these questions is important to transgender and gender non-conforming individuals in a time when more people are “coming out of the closet” and identifying as genders other than cisgender. As an anthropologist, …
Public Ritual Sacrifice As A Controlling Mechanism For The Aztec, Madeline Nicholson
Public Ritual Sacrifice As A Controlling Mechanism For The Aztec, Madeline Nicholson
Honors Scholar Theses
For decades, archaeologists have researched the fascinating finds of Aztec sacrifice. Evidence of their sacrifices are seen on temple walls, stone carvings, bones, and in Spanish chronicler drawings. Although public ritual sacrifice was practiced before the Aztecs, with evidence from the Olmec civilization (1200-1300 BCE) and Maya (200-900 BCE), Aztec sacrifices are among the most extensively documented. How does such a practice survive in different civilizations through different rulers? This thesis will analyze the phases of Aztec public ritual sacrifice (specifically the location, length, and number of sacrifices) and the close relationship to their origin myths, or founding stories. It …

Community Archaeology At Tall Hisban, Øystein Sakala Labianca
Community Archaeology At Tall Hisban, Øystein Sakala Labianca
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
This article introduces community archaeology as an emerging perspective on the role and responsibility of archaeologists in relation to the communities where they do their fieldwork. It then offers examples of specific ways in which the leaders of the original Heshbon Expedition (1968–1996) paved the way for the pioneering work in community archaeology of the Tall Hisban Cultural Heritage Project (1996–present). It also includes highlights of community archaeology related activities during recent field seasons and concludes by describing current efforts to provide for ongoing maintenance and protection of the archaeological site in perpetuity.

Living Together With Ancestors: Cultural Heritage And Sacred Places On West Java, Jörgen Hellman
Living Together With Ancestors: Cultural Heritage And Sacred Places On West Java, Jörgen Hellman
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
On Java (Indonesia), sacred places (tempat keramat) are powerful and contested sites. Historically they have served as important pilgrimage sites and more recently have also become major tourist attractions. In this paper, I will explore three ways of ‘past presencing’ - the nationalist, the Islamic and the traditional - and how groups representing each of these challenge one another at different sites. Today, sacred places in Indonesia are caught between the political ambitions of some who wish to create national cultural heritage, the aspirations of religious revivalists who want to cleanse the sites of what they consider superstition, and the …
