Published as a series sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution Bureau of American Ethnology, the “River Basin Surveys Papers” are a collection of archeological investigations focused on areas now flooded by the completion of various dam projects in the United States. The River Basin Surveys Papers (numbered 1-39) were mostly published in bundles, with 5-6 papers in each bundle. In collaboration with the United States (US) National Park Service and the US Bureau of Reclamation, the US Department of the Interior, and the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Smithsonian Institution pulled archeological and paleontological remains from several sites prior to …

The Scriptual Conception Of Life, Chung An Chin
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The Christian doctrine of hum.an nature as a section of theology is fundamentally built upon the basis of the divine revelation in Scripture, and looks at .man in his relation to God. Therefore, the study of man's life in theology has its own principle which is different from that of science or philosophy. Since Christian anthropology is based on the divine revelation, there must be no contradiction between theological and scientific know1edge concerning life, but we cannot expect to get every detail of scientific answer of human nature out of the Bible.

An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922 (Concluded), Delbert R. Hillers
An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922 (Concluded), Delbert R. Hillers
Concordia Theological Monthly
The sole contribution of the Netherlands to modern Old Testament theology is the Hoofdlijnen der Theologie van het Oude Testament of Th. C. Vriezen, professor of Old Testament at the University of Groningen. Opposing both the "mummifying process" of absolutizing the Old Testament as God's Word and the opposite fault of making it only man's word, Vriezen calls for a "theological Biblical criticism," and wishes in his book to bridge the gap between scientific Old Testament study and its use for practical, religious purposes. As is indicated by the title, Hoofdlijnen, he restricts his discussions to matters of major importance …

Section XV: Biology and the Rise of the Social Sciences
The two areas of the social sciences which were more stimulated by Darwin's research were anthropology and sociology. The Frenchman, Auguste Comte (1798-1857), generally regarded as the father of sociology and the originator of that term, laid the groundwork for the immediate application of the law of evolution to the study of society. Comte's conception of sociology is derived from his philosophy of history. Sharing the Enlightenment belief in progress, Comte saw history evolving through three stages. The first was the theological stage, in which men supplied supernatural explanations for the natural and social phenomena. This was followed bu what …

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences
Vastly increased research and a sounder technique in history in the nineteenth century had two influences on the social sciences. When an enthusiasm for the records of history was combined with the evolutionary perspective, it often resulted in the search for and the imposition of patterns of development on history in general or on the history of particular subject matters such as economics, politics, morals, or religion. Social scientists looked to history for explanations, in the hope of finding inevitable laws, stages of development, or the forces that moved human society. As historians worked out a critical method for their …

Indigenous Philosophy In The Valley Of Mexico, John F. Newcomer
Indigenous Philosophy In The Valley Of Mexico, John F. Newcomer
Philosophy ETDs
This study has been undertaken in the hope of helping to open new avenues of research in both philosophy and anthropology, avenues that have heretofore been largely overlooked. It has used as an example the pre-Conquest culture-complex of the Valley of Mexico. It is not intended to be an exhaustive exposition of every aspect of that complex, for that would take it out of the realm of philosophy and too far into that of anthropology. It is rather an examination of the salient features of Aztec culture in a philosophical light. It begins with a discussion of primitive philosophy in …
Amerindian Creation Myths And A Common Tradition, Robert L. Lail
Amerindian Creation Myths And A Common Tradition, Robert L. Lail
Bachelor of Divinity
Thus the reader has been led to the subject of this thesis. He is aware of a universal consistency of beliefs. It is quite evident that there is a likeness between these beliefs and the accounts of Scripture. The reader is also aware of the fact that there is a difference of opinion among students of anthropology concerning the origin of these similarities. With this overall view in mind, the author has decided to limit the investigation to creation myths, and, with these, the concept of a Creator-God. The author has limited the thesis further to myths and fragments of …

Frank Hamilton Cushing's Relations To Zuni And The Hemenway Southwestern Expedition 1879-1889, Clarissa Parsons Fuller
History ETDs
According to A.L. Kroeber, Cushing's residence at Zuni from 1879 to 1894, laid the foundation for the study of ethnology in the Southwest. This beginning of work in the study of the life, manners, and customs of the living Indians in the Southwest, came at a time when the modern study of ethnology was itself very new, dating its beginning back but twenty years before Cushing went to Zuni. It will be my purpose to summarize briefly briefly the history of general anthropology and ethnology, in order to indicate Cushing's place in the sequence as the new science developed.

New Revisons Of Comparative Religion, Th. Graebner
New Revisons Of Comparative Religion, Th. Graebner
Concordia Theological Monthly
The three stages of down-town metropolitan real estate: the brick store, the steel and concrete sky-scraper, the parking lot, fitly describe the history of the comparative study of religion. The foundation was laid in philology when Max Mueller together with many a less brilliant, but more profound student of language developed the imposing structure of the science of religion on the basis of etymological study. The structure was laid low less than fifty years later, and on its place was erected the colossal pile of the anthropological study of religion, based on the evolutionary theory. The reconstruction of Old Testament …
