Message In A Bottle: Lyrical Laments And Emotional Expression In Mandopop, Marc L. Moskowitz Jun 2008

Message In A Bottle: Lyrical Laments And Emotional Expression In Mandopop, Marc L. Moskowitz

Faculty Publications

This article explores the ubiquitous themes of loneliness, isolation and anomie in Mandopop (Mandarin Chinese language pop music). This is not to imply that people in the PRC and Taiwan are lonelier than people from other countries but, rather, that being human they experience these emotions. What is distinctive here is that Mandopop becomes a primary conduit to express feelings that are sanctioned in daily speech. The article addresses these concerns and uses in-depth interviews in Shanghai and Taipei to find out why Mandopop's themes of loneliness and isolation are so resonant to its fans.

Cultural Heroes And Mirrors Of Darker Desires: Transitioning Tricksters Of Our Past Into Contemporary Society, Laura R. Nadelberg

Anthropology Department Honors Papers

This paper is concerned with the trickster character, and its major importance and existence cross culturally, as well as in contemporary society. Many individuals are confused as to what exactly a trickster is. This paper will attempt to explain its nature in terms of defining characteristics. Although the trickster is generally thought of a lost icon or an extinct character, this paper will show that it is very much alive and well in today’s culture.

Introduction: The Practice And Prospects Of Grandparenting In The Pacific, Dorothy Ayers Counts May 2008

Introduction: The Practice And Prospects Of Grandparenting In The Pacific, Dorothy Ayers Counts

Pacific Studies

The contributors to this special issue represent the orientations and approaches of several social science disciplines and are variously involved in interdisci plina1y endeavors. However, anthropology is the primary discipline and ethno graphy a shared methodology. It is a main task of any ethnography to make the exotic familiar and to treat the familiar as though it were exotic. The papers in this special issue achieve this for grandparenthood in the Pacific. The familiar concept of grandparenthood is shown to have multiple meanings in close examinations of how the status is achieved, for example, what it means for a person's …

The Empowerment Of Women: Rights And Entitlements In Arab Worlds, Hania Sholkamy Jan 2008

The Empowerment Of Women: Rights And Entitlements In Arab Worlds, Hania Sholkamy

Faculty Book Chapters

Since the late 1990s rights-based approaches (RBAs) in development have been advanced by the major institutional development actors such as the UN, multilateral and bilateral agencies, and international NGOs. A number of critiques of RBAs have emerged that question whether the emancipatory potential of rights discourse and practice will be realized within development. These critiques, however, have not sufficiently questioned the implication of rights discourse and practice for advancing a gender equality agenda and women 's autonomy. This is an area that needs considerable research, and this publication explores some of the key issues at stake. The publication, based on …

Hair Cortisol As A Historical Record Of Systemic Hormone Exposure, Steven G. Thomson Jan 2008

Hair Cortisol As A Historical Record Of Systemic Hormone Exposure, Steven G. Thomson

Digitized Theses

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone secreted under normal and pathological conditions. It is typically measured in the serum, urine, or saliva which, while useful, are limited in the period of time measurable, and are only applicable prospectively. We measured cortisol in hair as a novel method to obtain long term data about exposure to cortisol. Using a modified salivary cortisol immune-assay, hair cortisol levels were measured in hair as old as 1800 years, and showed cortisol levels similar to modern day individuals living with elevated stress. Hair samples from patients with Cushing's Syndrome were analyzed and showed higher cortisol content …

Sustainable Development Of Maritime Cultural Heritage In The Gulf Of Maine, Stefan Claesson Jan 2008

Sustainable Development Of Maritime Cultural Heritage In The Gulf Of Maine, Stefan Claesson

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study the principles of sustainable development and ecosystem-based management are applied to develop a conservation policy for maritime cultural heritage in the Gulf of Maine. This dissertation first examines the effectiveness of existing laws, policies and preservation programs available for the protection and conservation of maritime historical and archaeological resources in the region, and provides an assessment of the diversity and abundance of these resources. Then the principles of sustainability and ecosystem-based management, including inter- and intra-generational equity, precaution, system interconnectedness, and diversity, are applied to form a theoretical framework upon which policies and cultural resource management techniques …

Legal Anthropology: An Introduction, James M. Donovan Jan 2008

Legal Anthropology: An Introduction, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Books and Chapters

LEGAL ANTHROPOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION offers an initial overview of the challenging debates surrounding the cross-cultural analysis of legal systems. Equal parts review and criticism, the author outlines the historical landmarks in the development of the discipline, identifying both strengths and weaknesses of each stage and contribution. LEGAL ANTHROPOLOGY suggests that future progress can be made by treating as the distinguishing feature of law the perceived fairness of structural inequalities of social systems, rather than the traditional emphasis upon sanction or dispute resolution.

Why Take The Risk?: Women's Interpretive Repertoires For Choosing Home Birth, Laura Ann St. Clair Jan 2008

Why Take The Risk?: Women's Interpretive Repertoires For Choosing Home Birth, Laura Ann St. Clair

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The purpose of this project was to use a social constructivist approach to understand the perception of risk by mothers making the choice to give birth at home in Missoula, Montana. Social constructivism assumes that knowledge about risk is filtered through “social and cultural frameworks of understanding” (Lupton and Tulloch 2002, 321). The information gained from participants in this study was interpreted as a representation of the individual’s culture, including their beliefs, values and upbringing, as well as the influences of the individual’s social network which can include family members, spouses, friends, and community members. Various phenomena, elements or constructs …

The Colour Of Time: Head Pots And Temporal Convergences, Charles R. Cobb, Eric Drake Jan 2008

The Colour Of Time: Head Pots And Temporal Convergences, Charles R. Cobb, Eric Drake

Faculty Publications

Colour symbolism permeated the world of indigenous North America. This symbolism was often tied to the cosmos where the earth was viewed as a quadrilateral disk and each of the four cardinal directions was linked with a colour array such as red, white, black, and blue. We suggest that the recurring use of certain colours and colour contrasts comprised a suite of long-term historical practices that were essential for reproducing certain views about the world and about being in the world. Further, the rendering of colour had a plasticity that allowed it to enter a discourse about daily life that …

Hispanic-Owned Businesses In West Michigan, Carol M. Sanchez, Paul Isely Jan 2008

Hispanic-Owned Businesses In West Michigan, Carol M. Sanchez, Paul Isely

Seidman Business Review

Many vibrant neighborhoods in West Michigan have large, growing Hispanic populations. In fact, Hispanics are one of the fastest growing segments of West Michigan’s population, due to high immigration and birth rates. According to the U.S. Census, over 94,000 Hispanics lived in Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, and Allegan Counties in 2006 — a little more than 7% of the total population — and that population has doubled since 1994. But the population of Hispanic individuals is not all that is growing. The number and variety of Hispanic-owned or Hispanic-focused businesses in Kent County is also increasing, evidenced by block after block …

Survey Of Forensically-Important Calliphoridae In Kingston And St. Andrew, Jamaica, West Indies, Wayne Anthony Cranston Jan 2008

Survey Of Forensically-Important Calliphoridae In Kingston And St. Andrew, Jamaica, West Indies, Wayne Anthony Cranston

LSU Master's Theses

The first research to be done in Jamaica on forensically-important species was conducted at the Government of Jamaica Forensic Laboratory in Kingston and St. Andrew in two phases. Phase 1was conducted from July 5 to July 24, 2007, and phase 2 was conducted from February 11 to February 28, 2008. In the phase 1 study, one local black colored Landrace pig (Sus scrofa L.) carcass that weighed 21kg was used as a model for human bodies to determine the rate of decomposition and the pattern of insect succession on decomposing bodies in Jamaica. Ants were the first arthropods to arrive …

Depression-Era Coloma: A World-Systems Study Of Mining And Daily Life Experiences In A Reoccupied Montana Ghost Town, Benjamin Woody Jan 2008

Depression-Era Coloma: A World-Systems Study Of Mining And Daily Life Experiences In A Reoccupied Montana Ghost Town, Benjamin Woody

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Anthropologically based studies are underdeveloped on the subject of people living in Montana during the Great Depression. During the summer of 2006, archaeological materials were retrieved from a Depression-Era trash dump at Coloma, Montana. From these artifacts and the available historical records about the area, this thesis postulates on the possible daily experiences of the people responsible for the creation of this dump. The data is then used as the foundation for a World-Systems perspective on the site, which, in turn, connects this mining camp to the world at large during the 1930s.

Claiming Equality: Puerto Rican Farmworkers In Western New York, Ismael Garcia-Colon Jan 2008

Claiming Equality: Puerto Rican Farmworkers In Western New York, Ismael Garcia-Colon

Publications and Research

n July of 1966, a group of Puerto Rican migrant workers protested against police brutality and discrimination in North Collins, a small farm community of western NewYork. Puerto Rican farmworkers made up a substantial part of the population, and had transformed the ethnic, racial, and gender landscape of the town. Local officials and residents produced and reproduced images of Puerto Ricans as inferior subjects within US racial and ethnic hierarchies. Those negative images of Puerto Ricans shaped the way in which local authorities elaborated policies of social control against these farmworkers in North Collins. At the same time, Puerto Rican …
