Chase continues to travel through Michigan with his sons and hopes to arrive in Gilead on Wednesday. He traded some cattle with Mr. Critchfield and reunited with old friends. He assures his wife that their sons are doing very well, and also assures her that they are safe from "Indian depredation."

John Kean wrote to Susan Livingston, unaddressed. John had been traveling for a handful of days through New Jersey and used this letter to explain his journey to Susan thus far. The first leg of the trip unfortunately was plagued by stormy weather and John was forced to stop at a tavern after only three miles.
