Adequate funding has become a critical issue for institutions of higher education, affecting outcomes such as accessibility, affordability, and quality of education. The recent economic recession has been detrimental for state funding, resulting in budget cuts for higher education in a majority of states. Overall, state funding has not kept pace with the rising costs of education. Additionally, the issues of state governance and institutional autonomy have also become heightened. Thus, many higher education institutions are initiating advocacy programs with their external constitutions. This year’s Forum brought a lot of excitement to the campus with one of the country’s most popular athletes – Tim Tebow – featured during the two-day leadership conference. Robert Gates, Pat Williams, and Mark Sanborn, along with a number of other prominent leaders, also spoke to an audience of close to 700 during the March 2012 event held in Bush Chapel.

Graduate Alumnus

Since 1951 Eastern has offered advanced study

with master’s programming. Since that first

offering thousands of students have earned

graduate degrees, and EIU graduate alumni

have changed the world we live in. In 2005

EIU celebrated more than 50 years of graduate

education by honoring 50 graduate alumni

as Outstanding Graduate Alumni. That same

year the Graduate Alumni Advisory Board was

created and met for the first time. Since those

initial 50 honorees, the Graduate Alumni

Advisory Board, the Graduate School, and EIU’s

graduate programs have continued to honor

the achievements and accomplishments of our

graduate alumni every year.
