Factors Influencing Social Workers Commitment To The Field Of Gerontology, Susan Savella Cole, Teresa Marie Alarcon

Theses Digitization Project

Due to the impending "elder boom" the need for gerontological social workers is increasing. This study examined what attracted workers to enter this field and what motivates them to stay. The research also focused on the relationship between the social worker's commitment and their perceived need for training and education in the field of gerontology.

Living Arrangements Of Older Adults In The Developing World: An Analysis Of Dhs Household Surveys, John Bongaarts, Zachary Zimmer Jan 2001

Living Arrangements Of Older Adults In The Developing World: An Analysis Of Dhs Household Surveys, John Bongaarts, Zachary Zimmer

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Using data from Demographic and Health Surveys, this study examines living arrangements of older adults in 43 developing countries and compares patterns by gender, world regions, and macro-level measures of socioeconomic development. Indicators include household size, headship, relationship to head, and coresidence with spouse, children, and others. Unweighted regional averages and OLS regressions determine whether variations exist. Average household sizes are large, but a substantially higher proportion of elderly adults live alone than do individuals in other age groups. Females are more likely than males to live alone and are less likely to live with a spouse or to head …

Pro-Aging Vs. Anti-Aging: A Comparative Study Of Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Vanessa Lee Benavidez

Theses

A comparative study was conducted on the attitudes toward older adults between Counselors and Non Counselors. The participants included 50 Licensed Professional Counselors from the state of Missouri, who are registered members of the American Counseling Association (ACA), and 33 Graduate students from Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri, who are enrolled in graduate programs unrelated to professional counseling. The participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the Facts on Aging Quiz' (FAQl). The demographic questionnaire contained personal data, and the FAQ 1 measured attitudes and knowledge in five areas: correct answer, negative bias, positive bias, neutral, and don't know. The …

Health Promotion For Older Adults: What Is The Potential?, Linda P. Fried Jan 2000

Health Promotion For Older Adults: What Is The Potential?, Linda P. Fried

Center for Policy Research

As a greater number of people reach old age, medicine is challenged to develop new approaches to this population. Health promotion, not just treatment of disease but improving the quality of life for older persons, must play a role. What happens to individuals in terms of health status as they get older, and what are the implications for health care needs? Where should we focus to get the biggest benefits in terms of health promotion? Overall, we have learned a tremendous amount over the last 25 years about the components of health as people get older, and what modifies their …

The Hidden Age Revolution: Emergent Integration Of All Ages, Matilda White Riley Jan 1998

The Hidden Age Revolution: Emergent Integration Of All Ages, Matilda White Riley

Center for Policy Research

Over the past 30 years my colleagues and I have been focusing on conceptual and empirical work (the aging and society paradigm) that does not create policies, but can inform them. The most immediate phase of this long cumulative history is leading us now to hidden changes in people's lives and social institutions that herald a new phenomenon world-wide--a phenomenon that may have momentous implications for the policies of the future. We call it "age integration" because it *integrates* older people with others of every age. When I come to the end of my lecture, I hope you will see …

Memory Development And Aging, Jane M. Berry Jan 1996

Memory Development And Aging, Jane M. Berry

Psychology Faculty Publications

And so, over a century ago, William James (1890) anticipated much of what has captured the attention of memory researchers in the ensuing years, particularly those working from the information processing perspective. I use this quote to open my Introduction to Psychological Science lecture on memory development across the lifespan because it alludes to different memory systems and stores, as well as individual and developmental differences in memory processing. In that lecture, questions of which memory processes and stores are most age sensitive are addressed, with the assumption that developmental changes in memory are not necessarily due to chronological age …

On Nonparametric Families Of Life Distributions: Some Issues And Applications., Murari Mitra Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In reliability theury, one in primarily concerned with the study of the lifetime of a unit. The unit may be a mechanical device or a component of such a device; it may also be a living organism. By lifetime, we usually mean the duration for which the unit under study continues to perform cartain specific functions before it passes on to what is popularly known as the 'failed state'. More generally, however, lifetime can be, and often is, interpreted as the time to occurrence of a certain event such as the elapsed time before a broken down machine starts functioning …

The Normal Physiological Aspects Of Aging As They Relate To Nurse Aid Care, Michele Corinne Allen Jan 1994

The Normal Physiological Aspects Of Aging As They Relate To Nurse Aid Care, Michele Corinne Allen

Theses

The education of caregivers is essential to proper care. The retention of nurse aids in long-term care of the elderly can be enhanced by specific instruction in the physical aspects of aging as it relates to the required care. The educational level of nurse aids may not give them the perspective needed to interpret the changes they see taking place in the elderly. This paper provides some of that additional perspective.

Aging changes begin at the cellular level Cell tasks are specific and functional Aging effects changes in cell function and response with subsequent visible and experienced signs and symptoms …

Untying The Knot: A Scoialist-Feminist Analysis Of The Social Construction Of Care: Social Research And Development Monograph No. 7, Dani Stehlik

Research outputs pre 2011

As the Australian population ages, policy and human service practice in the field of aged care assumes an increasingly important and relevant position. In this monograph I argue that women who are providing care for aged spouses, parents or relatives in their (or their carer's) own homes, are doing essential, hard and stressful work, work which is unpaid and often unacknowledged, and that the Australian welfare system is now structured around the invisible unpaid labour of such women. The rhetoric of Australian political parties is focussing more and more on the notion of an ideal' family' and 'community' and a …

The Older Population In Massachusetts, 1980-1990, Gerontology Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Gerontology Institute Publications

Massachusetts and the nation are aging! People 65 and older are growing in numbers more rapidly than other younger segments of the population, and the unprecedented growth of this group has created new demands on and new opportunities for every major sector of American life. But if we are to make constructive plans for an aging society, we must have sound information on the major changes in the make-up of the population.

This report shows how the older populations in Massachusetts and in the United States have changed in the decade between 1980 and 1990. It is designed to serve …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this study was to identify those variables which influenced health status, develop a survey instrument which established the prevalence of these variables among the county's elderly population, evaluate the results of the survey, and develop and implement a comprehensive educational program to meet the identified needs. Life events, along with demographic and other psychosocial variables, affect health status. It is anticipated that based upon the results of this study, the Community Medical Center (CMC) can develop programs which make coping with these events and variables easier and reduce their negative affects on thee elderly's health status.

Tumor Vasculature In Young And Old Hosts: Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Microcorrosion Casts With Microangiography, Light Microscopy And Transmission Electron Microscopy, James G. Walmsley, Scott R. Granter, Miles P. Hacker, Ann L. Moore, William B. Ershler

Scanning Microscopy

Tumor growth in vivo is dependent upon new blood vessel formation. When B16-F10 melanoma cells are implanted subcutaneously in young (3 mo) and old (24 mo) C57BL/6 mice the rate of growth is dependent on the age of the mice. This study involved a wide range of histological and microscopic techniques but was limited primarily to the initial phase of tumor growth. Stereological point counting from light microscopy (LM) of standard histological sections has been used to yield data regarding blood content. Tumor-bearing mice were perfused through the aorta with a fixation solution and were infused with a low-viscosity radiopaque …

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Eight month old C57BL6 mice were exposed (head only) to 0.5 rad or 50 rads of Argon particles at the Lawrence Berkeley Radiation Facility, CA. Neuromotor performance was assessed monthly for six months beginning twelve weeks post-irradiation using a ''string test". The decline in motor performance was dose-related and none of the animals was able to complete the task after four months of testing. Morphological changes were monitored six and twelve months post-irradiation by light and electron microscopy. The synaptic density in the CA-1 area of the hippocampus decreased six and twelve months after irradiation. The decrease after twelve months …

A Survey To Determine The Relationship Between The Elderly's And The Family’S Perception Of Aging, Paula M. Brubaker Aug 1984

A Survey To Determine The Relationship Between The Elderly's And The Family’S Perception Of Aging, Paula M. Brubaker

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the elderly*s and family's perceptions of aging. The null hypothesis stated that when the elderly's and family's perceptions of aging were compared, as determined by scores on the "Perceptions about Aging" survey, there would be no significant difference at the .05 level. Data were collected from 60 subjects. Thirty were individuals age 65 and above, and 3 0 were non-elderly family members, one for each participant, who had had contact with the elderly subject at least once a week. All subjects were administered the "Perceptions about Aging" survey. The …

Planning A Seminar On Aging To Disseminate Information To Personnel Working With The Aged, Oscar Raymond Gain Jr. Jan 1982

Planning A Seminar On Aging To Disseminate Information To Personnel Working With The Aged, Oscar Raymond Gain Jr.

Theses

The project consisted of planning and organizing a seminar for dissemination of information to persons working with the aged. From my ten years of experience in the health care profession, six of them were working with the aged population . I was surprised at my lack of knowledge about the older person. After attending the course as Lindenwood College my knowledge expanded from the biological to the social and psychological aspect of aging.

I decided to organize a seminar for local health personnel working with the aged in a thirty-mile radius of my residence. There were a total of six …

Aging And The Milieu Of Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann Jan 1982

Aging And The Milieu Of Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

One facet of the new conservatism, which is drawing so much interest but not much information currently is the proposal for converting a large number of social service programs (including the Administration on Aging) into a single community block grant program. Even without the Reagan Administration and its new conservatism, however, the case for substantial--if less dramatic--changes in the network of services and programs which benefit the aged has been growing for some time. In this chapter, wel review some of the broader implications of current social policies for the aged, and some of the criticisms raised among gerontologists, concentrating …
