Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objectives:

Disability in patients with epilepsy (PWEs) is multifactorial: beyond seizure frequency/severity, PWEs are prone to a range of neuropsychiatric, cognitive, and somatic comorbidities that significantly affect quality of life. Here, we explored how variations in seizure severity and the burden of self-reported somatic/neuropsychiatric symptoms correlate with disruptions to 24 h activity patterns (rest-activity rhythms [RARs]), determined through wrist accelerometry/actigraphy.

Methods:

Multiday wrist-actigraphy recordings were obtained from 59 adult patients with focal epilepsy (44% male, ages 18–72), who contemporaneously responded to validated psychometric instruments to measure anxiety, depression, sleepiness, and somatic symptoms. We conducted a similar in silico psychometric-actigraphic correlation …

Impact Of An Educational Intervention On Provider Perspectives About The Use Of Phenobarbital In The Management Of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome, Kimberly Twaddell

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is a clinical diagnosis that occurs when an individual who regularly consumes alcohol either reduces or stops consumption. Complications of AWS include admission to the intensive care unit, prolonged hospitalization, and increased risk of infection and mortality. These complications might lead to poor patient outcomes and increased healthcare costs. Currently, the standard of care in managing this inpatient population includes supportive and pharmacological interventions with sedatives such as benzodiazepines. However, recent research found that a long-acting barbiturate, phenobarbital demonstrated superiority in reducing both hospital length of stay and progression of AWS symptoms when compared to benzodiazepines. …

Vaccine Effectiveness Against Influenza A(H3n2)-Associated Hospitalized Illness: United States, 2022, Mark W Tenforde, Jennie H Kwon, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with historically low influenza circulation during the 2020-2021 season, followed by an increase in influenza circulation during the 2021-2022 US season. The 2a.2 subgroup of the influenza A(H3N2) 3C.2a1b subclade that predominated was antigenically different from the vaccine strain.

METHODS: To understand the effectiveness of the 2021-2022 vaccine against hospitalized influenza illness, a multistate sentinel surveillance network enrolled adults aged ≥18 years hospitalized with acute respiratory illness and tested for influenza by a molecular assay. Using the test-negative design, vaccine effectiveness (VE) was measured by comparing the odds of current-season influenza vaccination in influenza-positive …

DNA damage response (DNADR) recognition and repair (DDR) pathways affect carcinogenesis and therapy responsiveness in cancers, including leukemia. We measured protein expression levels of 16 DNADR and DDR proteins using the Reverse Phase Protein Array methodology in acute myeloid (AML) (n = 1310), T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) (n = 361) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) (n = 795) cases. Clustering analysis identified five protein expression clusters; three were unique compared to normal CD34+ cells. Individual protein expression differed by disease for 14/16 proteins, with five highest in CLL and nine in T-ALL, and by age in …
