Japanese Public Health Nurses' Culturally Sensitive Disaster Nursing In Islands - Focusing On Soc, Miki Marutani, Sagiri Aoki, Yukiko Anzai, Hiroko Okuda, Mayumi Kako, Susumu Fukita

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Objective: Natural disasters are intensifying due to climate change. Sense of Coherence (SOC) enhances a community's resilience to disasters (Sutton et al., 2020). Public health nurses (PHNs) are required to enhance people's SOC to prevent health crises(Sofyana et al., 2022).Previous studies found that PHNs in islands recognized that while islands are vulnerable to disasters, they also possess a culture regarding disaster preparedness(Marutani et al., 2020) .This study identifies elements within the culture of remote islands, as understood by public health nurses, that align with SOC.

Methods:In 2023–2024, we conducted semi-structured interviews with seven PHNs on five islands regarding disaster-related culture. …

Background: Diabetes Mellitus Type II (DMII) is a condition that affects millions of people every year and, while preventable, remains one of the top causes of death and disability in the United States. Typical treatment for DMII is focused on using pharmacological measures to lower and maintain hemoglobin A1C in a healthy range. Providers in a family practice clinic established a lifestyle change program to assist patients to reduce their A1C while also reducing the number of diabetic medications they take. The program was intended to improve metabolic health without relying solely on pharmacotherapy. The program encourages a low carb …

Growth With New And Old Technologies, Bernardo S. C. Ribeiro Aug 2026

Growth With New And Old Technologies, Bernardo S. C. Ribeiro

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper proposes a semi-endogenous growth theory that incorporates technology vintages and the endogenous evolution of multiple technological paradigms through innovation. It provides a characterization of both balanced growth equilibrium and transitional dynamics in an environment where new technologies continuously emerge. From a positive perspective, the model rationalizes two distinct empirical patterns. Using two centuries of US patent data, I first document that the age profile of patents has a pronounced hump shape: most contemporary patents build upon technologies that are between 50 and 100 years old. Second, this age profile has remained stable throughout the past century. From a …

The Impacts Of Emotions On Thirst Among Heart Failure Patients, Chieh-An Yang, Hsing-Mei Chen, Tsung-Neng Tsai, Chieh-Yu Liu, Hui-Ju Lu, Ting-Ti Lin

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Thirst, characterized by sensations of oral dryness and a craving to drink, is a ubiquitous experience among heart failure (HF) patients. Besides reduced cardiac output, the clinical treatments for HF patients (e.g., diuretics, fluid restriction) may activate the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), exacerbating their thirst distress.

Negative emotions are commonly experienced among heart failure patients. Previous studies have suggested that emotions (e.g., anxiety, depression) may activate the sympathetic nervous system, reducing the secretion of saliva, which, in turn, may increase sensations of dry mouth among HF patients. However, the relationship between emotions and thirst distress remains unclear. Therefore, the aim …

Graduate Teacher Education

This paper examined the best practices for incorporating culturally responsive teaching into the elementary music classroom to promote equity, inclusion, and cultural representation. As classrooms become more diverse, educators must adapt their curriculum and instructional practices to ensure all of their students' needs are met. Unlike regular classroom elementary school teachers, who work with a small group of students for the entire school year, elementary music teachers work with every student in the building. Therefore, elementary music teachers are in a unique position to effectively lead with a culturally responsive curriculum. This literature review was organized into three overarching themes …
