Ai, The Liberal Arts, And Indigenous Languages: Forming Code Into Language, Christina Graebner
Summer Research Showcase
During the Summer, Spanish Professor Adam Coon and I worked on creating an annotated biography on AI and Indigenous languages for the Digital Well at the UMN Morris Library. Through this project, we have dived into conversations and research focusing on using AI as a translator. In recent years, the conversation around AI has created a surge of studies and research around the relationship between Indigenous languages and artificial intelligence. AI will only continue to expand, and it creates new ways to open communication but creates new ethical guidelines needed to be followed. Our project gathers research articles, podcasts, and …
Visualizing 25 Years Of Change In The Glades Oak Savanna, Zoe Fieberg
Visualizing 25 Years Of Change In The Glades Oak Savanna, Zoe Fieberg
Summer Research Showcase
Oak savannas represent one of the most threatened ecosystems in Minnesota due to changing land use management, particularly absence of fire (Davis, 2001). Frequent burns kill fire-sensitive mesophytic tree species, reducing the dominance of woody understory and allowing for restoration of the oak savanna environment. The GLADES (Grid for Landscape Analysis and Demographic Study) site was established in 1988 in East Bethel, Minnesota to study the effect of frequent burning on oak savanna restoration. Through the use of standardized methods of photography, we compared canopy differences across GLADES between 2001 and 2026. Preliminary observations revealed increased canopy density and reduced …
Do Social Determinants Of Health Affect Tooth Retention For American Indian/Alaska Native (Ai/An) Adults?, Vae Day
Summer Research Showcase
American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults face severe dental disparities due to social determinants of health (SDOH). This study examines how socioeconomic, functional, and cognitive factors influence access to dental care. Quantitative analysis was conducted using SPSS Statistics. Chi-square testing and logistic regression evaluated relationships between variables. Using a strengths-based approach to this research, the outcome variable was recoded to measure “teeth retained” instead of “teeth removed due to tooth decay or gum disease”. Analyses revealed that tooth retention and healthcare access significantly increase with favorable SDOH, including reliable transportation, household income, ability to complete errands independently, having insurance, and retained …

The History And Importance Of Self-Compassion: Lack Of Application In Male Demographics?, Marshall Spilane
The History And Importance Of Self-Compassion: Lack Of Application In Male Demographics?, Marshall Spilane
Summer Research Showcase
Self-compassion has become an important part of mental health research, though its adoption in male populations has been slower than in others. The objective of this literature review is to expose a lack of implementation of self-compassion practices in male communities. This literature review explores this gap in adoption and provides an example of how research can move forward. The data were collected by analyzing current literature and compiling it. Current research on self-compassion has found evidence that self-compassion can improve emotional regulation and lessen depression symptoms. Many factors could influence the gap in adoption; some research suggests that mental …
Observing System Simulation Experiments For Uncrewed Aircraft Systems, Alex Sawn, Adam Houston, Shawn Murdzek, Terra Ladwig, Eric James
Observing System Simulation Experiments For Uncrewed Aircraft Systems, Alex Sawn, Adam Houston, Shawn Murdzek, Terra Ladwig, Eric James
ISARRA 2026
Radiosondes and commercial aircraft are the primary sources of in-situ meteorological data in the upper troposphere. While robust, these systems leave major coverage gaps which can lead to forecast errors in both global and regional numerical weather prediction. Assimilating data collected by Weather-observing uncrewed aircraft systems (WxUAS) have shown potential to yield large improvements in NWP forecast accuracy via profiles up to 2km AGL (Murdzek et al. 2026), but the impact of assimilating WxUAS profiles through the deep troposphere remains unknown. Before deploying WxUAS at scale, it is important to quantify the impact that simulated WxUAS observations have on NWP …
Faculty Insights On Teaching Self-Determination Skills In Postsecondary Education, Jacqueline Lubin
Faculty Insights On Teaching Self-Determination Skills In Postsecondary Education, Jacqueline Lubin
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
While self-determination skills may serve as a predictor of success in higher education, limited research exists on faculty attitudes toward teaching these skills to students with and without disabilities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine faculty’s knowledge of self-determination and perception of teaching self-determination skills to all college students. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance. Findings indicated that while the majority of participants were familiar with the term “self-determination,” and recognized its instructional value, their responses varied on their likelihood to teach skills. On average, faculty reported being somewhat likely to …

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
or more than two decades, university professors at the institute of study have implemented group oral examinations as a summative assessment strategy within their courses. This essay offers a critical reflection on the pedagogical benefits of this format, examining its impact on both instructors and students, while also addressing the practical and logistical challenges encountered in its sustained use. In the context of the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence and the corresponding complications it introduces for traditional assessment practices, the authors argue that group oral examinations have gained renewed significance. Specifically, they highlight the capacity of this approach to promote …
Contextualizing Second Language Anxiety In Multilingual Higher Education: Classroom Conditions And Clinical Settings, Busayo O. Ige
Contextualizing Second Language Anxiety In Multilingual Higher Education: Classroom Conditions And Clinical Settings, Busayo O. Ige
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
In South African universities, multilingual students whose first language is not English face distinct challenges that impact academic participation and success. This qualitative study examines how second language (L2) anxiety shapes first-year students’ classroom and clinical experiences at the University of Cape Town. Drawing on open-ended survey data, the study reveals that fear of negative evaluation, communicative apprehension, and prevailing language ideologies contribute to students’ reluctance to speak, feelings of invisibility, and withdrawal from engagement. Although anxiety tends to lessen over time, it rarely disappears completely. Notably, students experienced anxiety differently across settings: classroom discussions elicited greater fear and self-censorship, …

Academic Development As Mentoring In Online Education: Perspectives From Australia., Bopelo Boitshwarelo Dr, Claire Aitchison Dr
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
In recent years, Australian universities have intensified efforts to respond to the growing demand for remote and online study. This shift has underscored the need for academics who are appropriately prepared to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate high-quality online courses. Mentoring represents a key practice that can support the development of such expertise. However, formalized and well-established mentoring practices are not consistently present across Australian higher education institutions. In contrast, most universities maintain academic development units tasked with enhancing teaching capacity, particularly in relation to online learning. This paper conceptualizes aspects of academic development practice as a form of mentoring. …

From Reflection to Confidence: Student Career Self-Efficacy in Course-Embedded Career Learning at a Minority-Serving Institution
Abstract
This study examines undergraduate students’ career decision-making self-efficacy and related performance indicators within course-integrated career readiness assignments at a Hispanic- and minority-serving institution. As higher education institutions seek scalable approaches to workforce preparation, embedding career development into credit-bearing coursework may offer more equitable access to professional learning opportunities, particularly for students at Minority-Serving Institutions. Guided by Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy and the career decision-making self-efficacy framework, this evaluation study analyzes descriptive data from faculty-rated rubric summaries across multiple course-integrated assignments (assignment-level sample sizes varied) …
How Planning For Engineering Instruction Supported Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Pedagogy For Prek–12 Teachers, Kristen V. Napolitano, Amanda M. Gunning, Meghan E. Marrero
How Planning For Engineering Instruction Supported Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Pedagogy For Prek–12 Teachers, Kristen V. Napolitano, Amanda M. Gunning, Meghan E. Marrero
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
With the wide adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards across the United States and an increased focus on growing a diverse engineering workforce, learning to teach precollege engineering has become more important than ever. Yet limited precollege engineering certification pathway exists, leaving preK–12 teachers to integrate engineering with few resources or professional learning support. In high-need districts, where teachers are already underresourced and stretched thin, engineering may not make its way into the classroom at all. As a result, access to engineering and other STEM opportunities is disproportionately low among Black and Brown and/or low-income students in these communities, …
Mandate Lifecycle Extensions For Agentic Payment Credentials, Matthew T. Kirby
Mandate Lifecycle Extensions For Agentic Payment Credentials, Matthew T. Kirby
Defensive Publications Series
Autonomous AI agents, including large language model (LLM) agents, increasingly originate payment authorization requests under stored, cryptographically signed mandates derived from natural-language instructions. Existing frameworks verify machine-enforceable constraints — amount, payee, merchant — at transaction time; existing art separately teaches similarity-based transaction screening, single-use transaction-linked authorization credentials, decoupled out-of-band authentication, versioned credential supersession with freshness proofs, and attested display of transaction details. No reference teaches the lifecycle coupling specified here: (1) suspending a payment authorization request when a similarity score between a salted, committed embedding of the natural-language instruction — bound into the signed mandate with a pinned scoring stack …
Multi-Agent Pipeline For Category-Specific Factuality Calibration Using Conformal Inference, Chenyin Gao, Jiaqian Yu, Aniruddha Rao
Multi-Agent Pipeline For Category-Specific Factuality Calibration Using Conformal Inference, Chenyin Gao, Jiaqian Yu, Aniruddha Rao
Defensive Publications Series
A challenge in deploying generative models can be the occurrence of factual inaccuracies, particularly when attempting to maintain consistent reliability across diverse information categories. A disclosed technology describes a multi-agent pipeline that can quantify and calibrate the factual reliability of generated content. The system may operate as a black-box process where specialized agents can parse source material, generate categorized claims, and score their correctness. An evaluator agent can then apply category-specific conformal inference to filter claims that may not meet a defined statistical confidence level. This approach can provide a mechanism to manage the factuality of model outputs by providing …

Concurrent Multi-User Testing Framework, Yabin Huang, Dan Shi
Concurrent Multi-User Testing Framework, Yabin Huang, Dan Shi
Defensive Publications Series
Vehicle infotainment platforms, often referred to as in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems, undergo extensive testing covering device compatibility, safety compliance, and system security and stability. However, testing concurrent user interactions in multi-user and multi-display environments remains insufficient. Moreover, traditional single-user testing cannot detect concurrency-specific bugs, such as race conditions or data corruption, and custom-built concurrent tests lack scalability. This publication describes a concurrent multi-user testing system that solves existing testing solution shortcomings by detecting concurrency-related bugs using a simultaneous, isolated testing framework (or parallel execution software validation environment), reusing pre-existing tests for high scalability. Such a system enables simultaneous multi-tenant testing …
