Riluzole As A Dual-Targeted Radiosensitizer For Osteosarcoma: Targeting Tumor Cells And Angiogenic Vasculature To Enhance Single High-Dose Radiotherapy Efficacy, Pooja P. Rao Sep 2026

Riluzole As A Dual-Targeted Radiosensitizer For Osteosarcoma: Targeting Tumor Cells And Angiogenic Vasculature To Enhance Single High-Dose Radiotherapy Efficacy, Pooja P. Rao

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Osteosarcoma (OS), the most common primary bone malignancy of children and young adults, is intrinsically radioresistant, and outcomes for patients with unresectable or metastatic disease have not improved in over four decades. Single-dose radiation therapy (SDRT) is a potent modality against radioresistant, highly vascularized sarcomas, but its application in OS is constrained by dose-dependent normal tissue toxicity. Radiosensitizers achieving tumor control at lower doses therefore offer a direct route to widening the therapeutic window. Critically, OS radioresistance is not tumor-cell-autonomous. It emerges from two coordinated compartments: aberrant DNA repair and antioxidant capacity intrinsic to the tumor cell, and a radioprotective, …

Mesoscopic Scaling Of Microwave Transmittance And Disorder-Induced Alignment, Israel Kurtz Sep 2026

Mesoscopic Scaling Of Microwave Transmittance And Disorder-Induced Alignment, Israel Kurtz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis presents microwave measurements and numerical simulations of wave propagation and transmission through random mesoscopic waveguides. We analyze the scaling of mesoscopic microwave conductance, including departures from Ohm’s law near channel openings, which are frequencies at which new propagating modes enter the system, and the evolution of modal phase alignment within the medium, which leads to the observed diversity of transmission eigenvalues. We extend the transmission matrix formalism to all sample depths using the flux matrix, which relates the flux amplitude within the sample to the incident flux, and decompose the flux at each sample depth into forward- and …

Self-Organized Criticality In Biased Activated Random Walk, Joshua Meisel Sep 2026

Self-Organized Criticality In Biased Activated Random Walk, Joshua Meisel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We demonstrate many of the conjectured universality and self-organized criticality (SOC) properties of the interacting particle system Activated Random Walk (ARW) in the setting of one-dimensional biased walks, as formulated for instance in Levine and Silvestri’s 2024 survey. Namely, there exists the same limiting critical state for two finite ARW models, as well as for the infinite model as the density approaches its critical value from below. Many of the desired properties hold, including heavy-tailed avalanches, but spatial correlations decay exponentially fast, a deviation from the SOC paradigm. Nonetheless, the obtained decay rate vanishes with the bias. Since the critical …

A Surrogate-Model Methodology For Thermoacoustic Engine Design Using Multilayer Perceptrons, Ángela Alonso-Solórzano, Ana I. Velasco-Fernández, Carmen Iniesta, José Luis Olazagoitia, Jordi Vinolas

Artículos científicos

Thermoacoustic Stirling-like cycle engines offer a compelling solution for converting residual heat into usable energy through the generation of acoustic waves, providing a mechanically simple and environmentally friendly alternative. While recent developments have demonstrated the feasibility of using artificial neural networks for performance prediction, limited research has addressed the effect of training data volume or the experimental validation of these models. This study investigates the use of artificial neural networks to predict the acoustic power delivered to the power extraction branch in thermoacoustic engines operating at low drive ratios, using data generated through DeltaEC (Design Environment for Low-Amplitude Thermoacoustic Energy …

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Capacity development is essential for long-term biodiversity conservation. Yet knowledge of conservation capacity development needs and priorities remains limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries with high biodiversity and limited institutional capacity. This study addresses this gap by identifying and analyzing the priorities highlighted by conservation professionals in Peru. Using Q-methodology and open-ended surveys, we found three distinct perspectives from 27 conservation professionals working in Peru: strengthening legal enforcement and financing, shifting power to Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and embedding conservation values in public norms. These perspectives reflect fundamentally different theories of change, yet converge in their call for …

Greennet: Ai-Driven Routing Simulator For Sustainable Internet Energy Optimization, Olta Zagraxha Sep 2026

Greennet: Ai-Driven Routing Simulator For Sustainable Internet Energy Optimization, Olta Zagraxha

Theses

Reducing the energy consumption of communication networks while maintaining reliable service is an important challenge in sustainable computing. This capstone presents GreenNet, a simulation and evaluation framework designed to investigate whether energy-aware network control can reduce estimated energy consumption without unacceptable degradation in Quality of Service (QoS). GreenNet combines a graph-based network simulator, configurable traffic scenarios, and a web-based interface for examining network behavior and comparing control strategies. Three approaches are evaluated: an All-On baseline that keeps all links active, a rule-based heuristic that selectively deactivates links, and a hybrid controller based on Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), whose proposed actions …

Predictive Modeling For Traffic Accident Severity Using Machine Learning, Ahmad Bin Eid Sep 2026

Predictive Modeling For Traffic Accident Severity Using Machine Learning, Ahmad Bin Eid

Theses

Road traffic accidents remain a persistent public safety challenge, responsible for over 1.3 million deaths annually according to the World Health Organization. While considerable effort has gone into understanding accident patterns, predicting the severity of an accident before or immediately after it occurs remains a difficult problem — particularly when the underlying data is messy, imbalanced, and largely categorical in nature. This study applies three supervised machine learning classification algorithms — Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting — to predict the severity of road traffic accidents using a dataset of 12,316 records collected by the Addis Ababa Sub-city Police …

Individualized Bayesian Inference Identifies Novel Genetic Variants For Parkinson's Disease, Jin Ren, Yasaman J. Soofi, Md Asad Rahman, Qing Lu, Jinling Liu

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder with a significant genetic component. While genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been instrumental in identifying genetic variants associated with PD, the reliance on large sample sizes and population-level analyses may overlook variants with lower minor allele frequencies or individual-specific relevance. Individualized Bayesian Inference (IBI) offers a promising method to complement GWAS by identifying and prioritizing candidate genetic markers at both the individual and patients-like-me subgroup levels. This study evaluates the application of IBI to PD genetics, using GWAS as a baseline for comparison. We analyzed genetic data from the Fox Insight online …

Human Capital Disclosure And Labor Market Outcomes: Evidence From Regulation S-K, Jung Ho Choi, Dan Li, Daniele Macciocchi

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine the labor market consequences of the 2020 Regulation S-K requiring human capital disclosure in 10K filings. Using large-sample job-level data and a Generative Large Language Model (GLLM), we observe that public firms subject to the regulation increase their disclosure of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) information in job postings relative to a matched sample of large private firms. The increase in job-posting disclosure is more pronounced among firms facing greater external pressure to increase their workforce diversity. These findings suggest a shift in demand for diverse candidates by public firms following the regulation. Yet, consistent with short-term inelastic …

The Impact Of Gun Control Policies On Firearm-Related Deaths: A Two Decade State-By-Year Analysis, Rabana Tajrin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This report analyzed firearm-related deaths rates in the United States at the state level over a two decade period between 2000 to 2019. The study used a state-by-year analytical framework created from the U.S. Gun Deaths by County, 1999–2019 dataset (Eltom, 2019) in order to examine national trends, state-level differences, changes over time, geographic concentration, and regional variation. The analysis focused on firearm-related deaths by adjusting for population size differences (i.e., the crude firearm-related death rate) across U.S. states from 2000 to 2019. These analyses indicated that firearm-related deaths increased nationally during the study period. Total firearm-related deaths rose from …

Cognitive-Affective And Somatic Depressive Symptom Domains Related To Psychological Mechanisms And Sociodemographic Factors, Danielle B. Hazeltine Sep 2026

Cognitive-Affective And Somatic Depressive Symptom Domains Related To Psychological Mechanisms And Sociodemographic Factors, Danielle B. Hazeltine

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Major depressive disorder is prevalent, chronic, and heterogeneous, including cognitive- affective (e.g., maladaptive beliefs or thinking patterns and sad mood) and somatic (e.g., fatigue, appetite, or sleep changes) symptom domains. While depression domains have been long theorized, research examining psychological mechanisms underlying this distinction is limited. Preliminary research suggests cognitive-affective symptoms relate more strongly to cognitive mechanisms (cognitive bias, perseverative thought), somatic symptoms relate more strongly to behavioral mechanisms (behavioral inhibition/activation), and gender, race, and ethnicity moderate these relationships. This study examined whether cognitive-affective and somatic symptom domains differentially relate to cognitive and behavioral mechanisms, and whether these relationships are …

Authoritarianism, Hostility And Threat: An Analysis Of American Political Podcasts Surrounding The 2024 Presidential Election, Noah D. Cohen Sep 2026

Authoritarianism, Hostility And Threat: An Analysis Of American Political Podcasts Surrounding The 2024 Presidential Election, Noah D. Cohen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Political rhetoric surrounding key events has seen sharp increases in emotionally affective speech, intergroup sentiment, and rhetoric unbecoming of democratic societies in recent years. Similarly, semi-democratic and ideologically driven speech has become increasingly normalized within an era of political polarization and hardline beliefs in modern media. Within this economy of outrage, sensational and largely unmoderated media formats, particularly podcasts, have become a mainstay of political information and discourse. This raises an important question: how does rhetoric surrounding political events construct intergroup sentiment and authoritarian rhetoric within political media, particularly American political podcasts? Further, given political podcasts’ growing social influence in …

The Cranial Nerves And Electrical Stimulation, Devin K. P. Adair Sep 2026

The Cranial Nerves And Electrical Stimulation, Devin K. P. Adair

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Cranial nerves provide afferent pathways that enable bottom-up modulation of central autonomic and cognitive neural pathways. Because these pathways project to brainstem nuclei such as the nucleus tractus solitarius and engage neuromodulatory systems, including the locus coeruleus, electrical stimulation offers a mechanistically grounded approach to influencing brain function. This thesis tested whether active transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) produces physiological responses indicative of parasympathetic engagement, defined as decreases in heart rate, increases in heart rate variability, and decreases in respiration relative to a dose-matched earlobe control condition. Using cardiac and respiratory measures as physiological markers, taVNS at the tragus …

Fiscal Decentralization, Local Government Size, And Regional Economic Growth: Evidence From Indonesia, Faizul Mubarok, Hasta Dwi Pradana, Etty Puji Lestari

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This study investigates the dynamic relationship between fiscal decentralization, local government size, and regional economic growth in Indonesia. Integrating fiscal federalism theory with the Armey curve framework, the study examines whether decentralization reshapes the scale of subnational governments and how this influences growth outcomes. Using balanced panel data from 26 Indonesian provinces over the period 1995–2020, the analysis employs dynamic panel estimators based on the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) to address endogeneity, persistence, and unobserved heterogeneity. The results reveal a nuanced relationship between fiscal decentralization and government size. Greater revenue autonomy is associated with a contraction in government size …

Affordable Thermal Control For Cell Culture Chambers: An Open-Source, Pid-Based Heating Module, Majid Rostami, Sesha Sai Ramineni, Sangyoon J. Han

Michigan Tech Publications

Commercial environmental control systems for live cell imaging chambers frequently cost $10,000–20,000. This paper presents an open-source, PID-controlled heating module built entirely from off-the-shelf components for approximately $500. The system employs four adhesively mounted polyimide heater pads driven at 12 VDC through a closed-loop chain: a K-type thermocouple feeds a Delta DTB4848LV controller, whose analog output is converted to PWM and applied to the heaters via an opto-isolated MOSFET switch. The required heating power was determined through analytical thermal sizing and verified by finite-element simulation (ANSYS Mechanical), confirming that the cell culture region reaches 37°C at steady state. Bench testing …
