Publications and Research
Transdermal delivery of high-molecular-weight proteins is challenging because of their large molecular size and hydrophilicity, and the barrier properties of the stratum corneum. We report a hydrated ionic liquid-in-oil (HIL/O) microemulsion for transdermal delivery of high-molecular-weight proteins. A biocompatible ionic liquid (IL) composed of cholinium cation and propionate anion, optimized at 45 wt% hydration, was developed as a protein-compatible solubilization medium that dissolved ovalbumin (molecular mass ∼ 45 kDa) and bovine serum albumin (molecular mass ∼ 66 kDa), whereas lower hydration levels were insufficient for effective protein dissolution. Following solubilization, circular dichroism spectroscopy showed recovery of the native-like secondary structures …

Project Fits Within The Evidence-Based Practices Continuum, Afiya King, Hillarie Wise, Nakia Cross, Donna Dent, Andrew Jordan Williamson, Maysa Osman, Carlos A O Pavao
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: This study examines the implementation and evaluation of the Peer Assisted School Transition (P.A.S.T.) Project, an evidence-informed, peer-led intervention designed to prevent substance misuse among youth during key educational transitions. The study explores the effectiveness of the program in strengthening protective factors, reducing risk factors, and enhancing skills related to substance misuse prevention.
Methods: A mixed-methods evaluation design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-surveys administered to fifth- and eighth-grade students to assess changes in knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Qualitative data were collected through focus groups, interviews, and observations to provide contextual insight into program implementation …

Precision Approaches Improve Community Health, Roger A. Rennekamp, David Buys
Precision Approaches Improve Community Health, Roger A. Rennekamp, David Buys
Journal of Extension
Recent advances in data science provide Extension practitioners with access to data sorted by zip code, census tract, or neighborhood. Such hyper-local data now allows Extension personnel to assess community needs and assets at a more granular level and focus their work on the people and communities of greatest need. In this article, we introduce an approach we refer to as precision public health. Using such a precision approach to community assessment and, ultimately, programming can save money, increase the likelihood of producing measurable results, and create more manageable workloads for county-based Extension personnel.

Community Strengths: A Global Partnership To Support Children With Disabilities In Ghana, Christine Rae Platt, Michael Thomas, Brandon Thatcher, Ashlee Johnson
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: To conduct a community-based needs assessment with Ghanaian caregivers of children with disabilities and collaboratively develop strategies to address identified gaps.
Methods: A community-based participatory action research approach, between a U.S. university’s global health initiative and the Africa Interdisciplinary Research Group, was used to engage Ghanaian community members including mothers from a cerebral palsy support group, a schoolteacher, a school board representative, pediatric and community health nurses, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, an orphanage caregiver, and a reverend overseeing the orphanage. Data were collected through focus groups or individual interviews. Thematic analysis identified core themes reflecting needs and community strengths, …
Irrigation Management With A Field Water Balance And Virus Incidence In Dahlia Cut Flowers, Chloe Seeborg, Melanie Stock, Claudia Nischwitz, Xin Dai, Cambry Adams, Burdette Barker
Irrigation Management With A Field Water Balance And Virus Incidence In Dahlia Cut Flowers, Chloe Seeborg, Melanie Stock, Claudia Nischwitz, Xin Dai, Cambry Adams, Burdette Barker
Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
Irrigation guidelines are needed for the field production of emerging specialty crops to support the sustainability and economic viability of small farms. The goal of this study was to establish crop coefficients (Kc) of dahlia (Dahlia × hybrida), a popular, profitable cut flower crop, while documenting virus infection. A two-year field study was conducted with two industry-important cultivars that vary in production timing and bloom: ‘Boom Boom White’, an earlier and mid-sized formal decorative, and ‘Café au Lait’, a later and large informal decorative bloom type. A field water balance was used to evaluate five irrigation …

No Evidence For Modulation Of The Readiness Potential By Respiratory Phase During Natural Breathing, Lucas Jeay-Bizot, Raniyah Chisti, Uri Maoz, Aaron Schurger
No Evidence For Modulation Of The Readiness Potential By Respiratory Phase During Natural Breathing, Lucas Jeay-Bizot, Raniyah Chisti, Uri Maoz, Aaron Schurger
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Respiratory processes are increasingly implicated in shaping neural activity and behavior. Recent studies have reported a coupling between respiratory phase and the cortical readiness potential (RP), suggesting that breathing may modulate the neural processes preceding voluntary action. Here, using electroencephalography recordings in humans, we re-examine this claim using the original dataset and a new independent dataset, as well as in simulated data with no coupling. We show that the reported association arises from a confound: both RP amplitude and respiratory phase are coupled to movement onset. The original analysis does not control for this dependency, leading to a spurious effect …
