Somatic-type malignant transformation (STM) is a rare but aggressive complication of nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCTs), most commonly arising from the teratomatous component and frequently occurring in metastatic sites. We report the case of a man in his 20s with a history of mixed NSGCT (50% yolk sac tumor, 40% teratoma, and 10% embryonal carcinoma) treated with left orchiectomy and chemotherapy in 2023, who initially responded to treatment but was subsequently lost to follow-up. He presented with one week of progressive dyspnea and pleuritic left-sided chest pain. Serum alpha-fetoprotein was markedly elevated at 2,966.7 ng/mL. Computed tomography demonstrated a progressive …

Granite Staters Disapprove Of Trump's Tariffs, Think They Will Increase Cost Of Living 9/3/2026, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Pluralities of New Hampshire residents feel worse off financially than a year ago and expect to be doing about the same a year from now. More than three-quarters of Granite Staters say their cost of living has increased in the past year, especially gasoline, groceries, and energy. More than three-quarters expect tariffs to cause prices to increase and a majority disapprove of President Trump's use of them so far. Overall, Granite Staters are largely pessimistic about the wider national economy, with a majority expecting a recession within the next year, but are more ambivalent about the New Hampshire economy.

Unmasking Myths And Facts About Actinomyces Species: Analysis From A Tertiary Care Hospital, Kanak Vats, Bhawna Sharma, Deepthi Nair

Muthanna Medical Journal

Actinomycetes are gram-positive, non-spore-forming, filamentous anaerobic bacteria that constitute part of the normal oral and intestinal flora and are widely distributed in the environment. Actinomycosis is a chronic, suppurative granulomatous infection frequently associated with deep-seated and recurrent infections. This five-year retrospective study (June 2018–June 2024) aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Actinomyces species isolated from various clinical specimens. Samples received for Anaerobic culture and sensitivity were processed as per standard protocol and antibiogram was obtained for the respective pathogen isolated. Of the 508 specimens processed, 109 (21.4%) yielded pathogenic anaerobes, among which Actinomyces species accounted for …

Social Interactions Between People Living With Dementia And Staff In Health And Social Care Settings: A Scoping Review, Stephanie Janka-Spurlock, Georgia Page, Gary Hodge, Helen Lloyd, Susie Pearce Sep 2026

Social Interactions Between People Living With Dementia And Staff In Health And Social Care Settings: A Scoping Review, Stephanie Janka-Spurlock, Georgia Page, Gary Hodge, Helen Lloyd, Susie Pearce

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Dementia is an umbrella term for progressive conditions affecting memory, thinking, communication and other cognitive functions. These changes can make social interaction challenging, particularly in unfamiliar or overstimulating environments. Although social interactions between staff and people living with dementia are recognised as an aspect of care, existing literature across health and social care settings largely focuses on general care needs and experiences rather than social interaction specifically. Consequently, there is limited understanding of the types of social interactions that occur and the contextual factors influencing them. This scoping review aims to address this gap by mapping existing research on social …

Acquired brain injury (ABI) is the leading cause of adulthood injury-related death and disability worldwide. Despite ABI’s prevalence, little is known about the extent to which social workers are prepared for brain injury working and specifically pre-qualifying brain injury curricula. This study employed a nine-item survey regarding brain injury social work knowledge. The survey asked about curricula inclusion within social work pre-qualification via multiple education providers to understand the extent to which brain injury training is incorporated within UK courses. This included a series of open-ended questions. Data from 36 survey respondents identified that 1) there was an acknowledged gap …

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infections (BSI) are a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients. Rapid diagnosis of BSI is critical for timely and appropriate clinical management, but current diagnostic strategies have a prolonged turnaround time or only identify select pathogens with minimal prognostic information.

METHODS: We examined serial serologic samples from 77 intensive care unit (ICU) patients at time points before, during, and after diagnosis of presumptive BSI to identify host-derived protein biomarkers associated with specific organisms and with clinical outcomes in BSI. ICU patients with and without BSI were included. Two candidate biomarkers, tissue metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) and …

Training For Social Prescribing Link Workers: A Scoping Review, S. Tierney, G. Hanley, H. Napierala, L. Burns, K. Husk

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Social prescribing involves connecting people to community-based resources to address non-medical determinants of health. Central to its delivery are link workers; their effectiveness depends, in part, on the availability and quality of training. Despite rapid expansion of the link worker role on an international scale, training provision for this workforce remains fragmented and poorly mapped. Aim: To identify and describe training programmes for link workers reported in the published and grey literature. Methods: We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology on scoping reviews. Six electronic databases were searched alongside targeted grey literature searching. Sources were included if they described …

A Brief History Of Irrigation In Utah, Burdette Barker, Reagan Wytsalucy

All Current Publications

Irrigation is essential for most crop production in Utah. With an ever-increasing population, regular drought cycles, and environmental concerns, there is a public discourse about agricultural irrigation water use. This fact sheet is an effort to step back in time to consider the heritage of irrigated agriculture in Utah, from prehistory to the present, and the modernization of irrigation driven by global industrialization and the information age.

Single-Session Robot-Assisted Removal Of A Retained Ureteral Stent With Complex Proximal And Distal Encrustation: A Case Report, Maximo Alvarez, Cole Freedman, Emma Romero, Paul Kim, Alexis Garza, Harras Zaid Sep 2026

Single-Session Robot-Assisted Removal Of A Retained Ureteral Stent With Complex Proximal And Distal Encrustation: A Case Report, Maximo Alvarez, Cole Freedman, Emma Romero, Paul Kim, Alexis Garza, Harras Zaid

School of Medicine Publications

Retained encrusted ureteral stents represent a complex urologic problem, particularly in patients with limited healthcare access. We present a 28-year-old undocumented female with a 10-month retained ureteral stent who developed massive right-sided encrustation, including a 3 cm proximal renal stone near the renal pelvis and a 5-6 cm bladder stone, classified as FECal Grade IV-V. A single-session combined approach consisting of robot-assisted cystolithotomy, intraoperative ureteroscopy with stent exchange, and robot-assisted pyelolithotomy was performed successfully. Intraoperative ureteroscopy between operative phases confirmed ureteral clearance and enabled immediate stent placement without repositioning delay. This case supports the use of combined robotic approaches for …

This review synthesizes current evidence on the application of machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and the Internet of Things (IoT) across the food production continuum, from raw material inspection to consumer-facing nutrition guidance. We examine how convolutional neural networks, hyperspectral imaging, and sensor-fusion approaches enable rapid, non-destructive detection of contaminants and pathogens, and how predictive models support shelf-life estimation and quality grading. We further discuss AI-enabled traceability systems, including blockchain-integrated supply chains, and the growing …

Edge Computing-Enabled Secure Federated Learning For Anomaly Detection In Industrial Iot Sensor Streams, Wijdan Noaman Marzoog Al Mukhtar Sep 2026

Edge Computing-Enabled Secure Federated Learning For Anomaly Detection In Industrial Iot Sensor Streams, Wijdan Noaman Marzoog Al Mukhtar

AUIQ Technical Engineering Science

The rise of the Industrial IoT (IIoT) will result in a surge of IIoT devices with high-velocity data streams requiring rapid, real-time analysis of these data streams to power predictive maintenance and assure cybersecurity. Centralized cloud-based approaches to anomaly detection are hindered by their inherent latency and privacy issues while independent or stand-alone approaches to edge-based anomaly detection do not have enough data to effectively detect anomalies. This paper presents a federated learning framework to collaboratively develop an anomaly detection model from multiple edge nodes, without sharing the raw sensor data, so that data sovereignty is preserved. Two major contributions …

Microwave Thermal Pre-Treatment To Improve Nickel Extraction From Lateritic Ore, Johana Borda, Daniel Sosa, Robinson Torres

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Two heat treatment processes for a nickeliferous laterite sample are presented, one by the conventional muffle route and the other by microwave. The heating was carried out in order to improve the dissolution of nickel in an acid medium. The study describes the changes observed in the mineral for the increase in temperature as a consequence of radiation in the microwave and in the muffle. The changes in the mineral crystalline phases were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The leaching media consisted of a 1 M sulfuric acid solution at ambient conditions for 7 h. The interaction between the reagent and …

On The Existence, Uniqueness And Stability Of Solutions Of Sdes With State-Dependent Variable Exponent, Mustafa Avci Sep 2026

On The Existence, Uniqueness And Stability Of Solutions Of Sdes With State-Dependent Variable Exponent, Mustafa Avci

Journal of Stochastic Analysis

We study a time-inhomogeneous nonlinear SDE with drift and diffusion governed by state-dependent variable exponents. This framework generalizes models like the geometric Brownian motion (GBM) and the constant elasticity of variance (CEV), offering flexibility to capture complex dynamics while posing analytical challenges. Using a fixed-point approach, we prove existence and uniqueness, analyze higher-order moments, derive asymptotic estimates, and assess stability. Finally, we illustrate an application where Poisson’s equation admits a probabilistic representation via a timehomogeneous nonlinear SDE with state-dependent variable exponents.

Companion Matrices Associated To Stochastic Matrices, Andreas Boukas, Philip Feinsilver Sep 2026

Companion Matrices Associated To Stochastic Matrices, Andreas Boukas, Philip Feinsilver

Journal of Stochastic Analysis

Starting with a stochastic matrix, we study the behavior of powers of an associated companion matrix, which has the same characteristic polynomial as the original matrix. In general the companion matrix will have negative entries while maintaining rowsums equal to 1. We will find the growth rate even if the Ces`aro limit of the sums of the companion matrix diverge. Surprisingly, in the irreducible aperiodic case the powers of the companion matrix will converge even though the norm of the matrix exceeds 1 and it has possibly negative entries.

Z+-Valued Additive Processes In Law With Nonnegative Increments, Nadjib Bouzar Sep 2026

Z+-Valued Additive Processes In Law With Nonnegative Increments, Nadjib Bouzar

Journal of Stochastic Analysis

The goal of this article is to study in depth the subclass of Z+- valued additive processes in law with nonnegative increments. We establish key distributional properties of these processes and obtain some existence results under a variety of conditions. We show that they form a subclass of the family of inhomogeneous Markov chains with spatial homogeneity. We extend the notion of factoring introduced by Sato (2004, [9]) for Rd-valued additive processes in law to their Z+-valued counterparts with nonnegative increments. We give a sufficient condition for the existence of a factoring for these processes. Lastly, we obtain their representation …
