Eviscerating The State: An Update, Jean L. Cohen
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
A year after the publication of her article “Eviscerating the State: The New Oligarchic and Authoritarian Project to Undermine American Constitutional Democracy (Emancipations, Vol.4: Iss.2, July 2025) Jean Cohen looks again at the threats to American constitutional democracy posed by new oligarchic and authoritarian actors in the economy, the state, and society.
From Monopoly To Orchestration: The Hilltop And Farm Youth And The Changing Organization Of State Coercion - The Israeli Case, Idan Yaron
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
Drawing on more than a decade of ethnographic fieldwork – as a social anthropologist, studying the Far Right in Israel, on the ground, and through intimate and prolonged relationships with opinion leaders and rank-and-file activists – this essay examines the Hilltop and Farm Youth in the West Bank to reconsider Charles Tilly's influential account of state formation and the organization of coercion. It asks a simple but troubling question: why would a powerful modern state, fully capable of suppressing autonomous violent actors, sometimes allow them to persist? I argue that Tilly's theory should be confirmed, adapted, and amended. His fundamental …
Uneven And Combined Fascism: A Postapocalyptic Perspective, Daniel Loick
Uneven And Combined Fascism: A Postapocalyptic Perspective, Daniel Loick
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This essay develops the concept of “uneven and combined fascism” as an alternative to dominant liberal approaches that understand fascism primarily as a future rupture or return of the European past. Analogizing the crisis of democracy with environmental crisis, it argues that fascism, like ecological catastrophe, should be understood as an ongoing and differentially distributed condition: already present for some while remaining latent or emergent for others. The essay develops this claim by consulting approaches of "postapocalyptic environmentalism" as well as thinkers and activists from the Black Radical Tradition, particularly the analyses of Aimé Césaire and the Civil Rights Congress’s …
Border Fascism And The Fascistization Of Society, Nicholas P. De Genova
Border Fascism And The Fascistization Of Society, Nicholas P. De Genova
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
The massive destruction and social dislocation wrought by capitalist crisis has culminated, historically, in the brutal cataclysms of fascism and other forms of authoritarian rule. Today, across the globe, we are confronted with the aggressive advance and entrenchment of a variety of such authoritarian political projects. Anxious discourses about ascendant fascism have become perfectly mainstream. These developments command our acute attention and critical analysis. This essay addresses these dire questions and the conceptual vexations surrounding the concept of fascism, particularly as it has been elaborated in various Marxist analyses. Specifically, much of the debate around fascism as an analytical category …

System And Method For Temporally-Correct Point-In-Time Embedding Reconstruction From Append-Only Accumulator Delta Logs, Durga S. Kala, Xinrong Huang, Nishanth Telukunta, Sreekanth Kanichetty
Defensive Publications Series
A system (200) for point-in-time reconstruction of time-decayed behavioral embedding accumulator states for payment entities includes an append-only accumulator delta log (202) that records, for each accumulator update event, an entity identifier, an exact authorization timestamp, a D-dimensional embedding delta, a pre-computed exponential decay factor, and the resulting accumulator weight. A checkpoint store (204) periodically snapshots the accumulator state including a decayed sum, a total weight, and a timestamp for each entity. A reconstruction engine (206) reads the latest checkpoint prior to a query timestamp, replays all delta log entries for the entity with timestamp strictly less than the query …
Decoupled Pricing And Fulfillment Arbitrator For Multi-Destination Agentic Commerce Systems, Richa Gupta
Decoupled Pricing And Fulfillment Arbitrator For Multi-Destination Agentic Commerce Systems, Richa Gupta
Defensive Publications Series
A decoupled pricing and fulfillment arbitrator extends the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to maintain volume-based discounts for e-commerce orders shipped to multiple destinations. The system operates through a two-phase cryptographic handshake, where the arbitrator first validates the total item quantity in a cart to secure a global price lock from a merchant’s application programming interface (API). The arbitrator then atomizes the single order into multiple, concurrent fulfillment requests, one for each distinct shipping address. By embedding a cryptographic bulk token into each parallel request, the arbitrator instructs the merchant’s system to bypass standard single-destination validation rules and apply the pre-approved …

Selective Bookmarking And Curated Export Of Conversational Ai Message Turns To External Documents And Notebooks, Richa Gupta
Selective Bookmarking And Curated Export Of Conversational Ai Message Turns To External Documents And Notebooks, Richa Gupta
Defensive Publications Series
In multi-turn conversations with conversational artificial intelligence, details established in earlier turns are prioritized less than more recent turns as a session grows longer, and locating or reusing valuable content from within a long conversation typically requires scanning the full transcript or manually copying individual passages. This disclosure describes a message-anchoring and bookmarking approach in which each conversational turn is assigned a persistent identifier. A cited identifier is used to isolate and prioritize the corresponding turn, while unrelated conversational content is masked from further processing. Selected turns are additionally flagged through a bookmarking control, and the flagged turns are compiled, …
Dynamic Ir-Drop Prediction For Analog-Mixed-Signal Blocks Using A Two-Stage Graph Network Architecture, Prateek Pendyala
Dynamic Ir-Drop Prediction For Analog-Mixed-Signal Blocks Using A Two-Stage Graph Network Architecture, Prateek Pendyala
Defensive Publications Series
Dynamic IR-drop verification, the analysis of transient supply voltage sag caused by currents in resistive supply metal, can become a simulation bottleneck for analog-mixed-signal (AMS) blocks. Layout-dependent current profiles may demand long transient simulation runs, and a custom analog power delivery network (PDN) lacks the structured grid routing found in digital designs. A prediction method addresses these limitations in two stages. A first stage applies graph attention layers to a circuit graph once per circuit and caches the resulting static embedding. From the cached static embedding, a recurrent waveform predictor forecasts transient supply currents without graph operations in a time-stepping …
Remote Control Using Render Buffer Accessibility Extraction, Inductively Powered Electrophoretic Keycaps, And An Ultra-Wideband Pointing Latch, Stenal P. Jolly
Remote Control Using Render Buffer Accessibility Extraction, Inductively Powered Electrophoretic Keycaps, And An Ultra-Wideband Pointing Latch, Stenal P. Jolly
Defensive Publications Series
Streaming applications on a smart television often render an interface into a single hardware-accelerated graphics surface. A native accessibility engine may treat that surface as one opaque node, and printed remote keycaps do not follow the content on screen. A remote control system addresses these limitations by extracting geometry and text directly from a graphics processing unit (GPU) render buffer of a host computing device. The system rebuilds a virtual accessibility tree once per render frame. Compact per-key updates travel over a low-energy wireless link to electrophoretic keycap displays, and inductive power regulation holds each keycap display at a steady …
Routability-Aware Decoupling Capacitor Insertion Using Trial-Route Lookups And Linear Programming, Prateek Pendyala
Routability-Aware Decoupling Capacitor Insertion Using Trial-Route Lookups And Linear Programming, Prateek Pendyala
Defensive Publications Series
Dynamic IR drop, a transient loss of supply voltage proportional to current (I) and resistance (R), can erode timing margins on advanced process nodes. Decoupling capacitors (decaps) inserted near cells with high switching activity can suppress the drop. The regions that need decaps, however, tend toward heavy routing congestion, so a newly placed decap can trigger detailed routing design rule violations (DRVs). An example routability-aware method selects decap locations and bounded cell moves through a linear program built from measured routing data. The method models cell currents as rectangular envelopes over binned time, computes a missing charge from a charge …
A Load-Bearing, Fluid-Mediated Robotic Joint Architecture Combining Variable-Geometry Friction Interlocks With Passive Multi-Stage Granular Jamming Inside A Tensegrity Compression Frame, Volodymyr Kotegov
Defensive Publications Series
This paper describes the QUINTO-CMC modular articulation architecture, built to hold high structural loads in contaminated or corrosive operating environments while cutting static holding power to a minimal telemetry-only draw. The system replaces high-maintenance, actively powered joints with an unpowered, field-replaceable cartridge that locks mechanically under zero electrical load. The physical joint module weighs no more than 1.75 kg. Static holding draw is limited to 18–25 W for telemetry and monitoring alone — the mechanical lock itself needs no electrical power. Three kinematically uncoupled passive locking layers trigger in sequence during pressure drops or sudden fluid loss. The primary retention …
Two‑Phase Trust‑Region Constraint Programming With Dynamic Bounds Scaling For Macro Legalization And Alignment, Vijayavelu S, Amit Saluja, Surya Barik, Arijit Hazra
Two‑Phase Trust‑Region Constraint Programming With Dynamic Bounds Scaling For Macro Legalization And Alignment, Vijayavelu S, Amit Saluja, Surya Barik, Arijit Hazra
Defensive Publications Series
Legalizing a mixed‑size layout that holds large hard macro blocks together with millions of standard cells becomes difficult at advanced technology nodes, where mismatched technology grids and zero‑slack boundaries leave narrow room for movement. Prior approaches bound macro movement with one static displacement limit, so a tight limit can leave macros out of alignment and a loose limit can deadlock a discrete engine. Disclosed is a two‑phase method that separates legalization from alignment. A first phase carries hard feasibility rules without an alignment objective and returns a legal coordinate set. A bounds scaling module then sizes a search window for …
Contention-Based Write Pulse Modulation On A Replica Timing Path For Process-Tolerant Sram Write Operations, Abhishek Dalal, Ayush Kulshrestha, Ajith K. P, Guru Shamanna, Akash Jha
Contention-Based Write Pulse Modulation On A Replica Timing Path For Process-Tolerant Sram Write Operations, Abhishek Dalal, Ayush Kulshrestha, Ajith K. P, Guru Shamanna, Akash Jha
Defensive Publications Series
Write margins in a static random-access memory (SRAM) array shift with semiconductor process variation, and the shift grows severe at the slow-NMOS/fast-PMOS (SF) corner, where a strong pull-up network inside a storage cell resists an overwrite. A raised supply voltage widens that mismatch gap further. A write pulse modulation method addresses the problem by coupling a contention circuit to the dummy bitline of a replica timing path. The contention circuit holds an active pull-up against a dummy pull-down network, so the discharge rate of the dummy bitline follows the local ratio of PMOS drive to NMOS drive. Reset logic ends …
Explainable Ai-Governed Namespace Capability Risk Brokerage With Kernel-Enforced Operation Leases, Bharat Kumar Putta
Explainable Ai-Governed Namespace Capability Risk Brokerage With Kernel-Enforced Operation Leases, Bharat Kumar Putta
Defensive Publications Series
A security architecture is proposed herein for controlling privileged actions by artificial intelligence (AI) agents and automated workloads across operating-system, container, cluster, and tenant namespaces. The architecture evaluates cumulative capability risk and issues narrowly scoped, short-lived operation leases. Each lease is cryptographically bound to the requesting workload, target object, operation arguments, namespace context, policy version, and a human-auditable explanation, and is verified by the operating-system kernel at the moment of execution. By replacing broad standing privileges and application-layer allow decisions with explainable, context-sensitive least privilege, the architecture reduces the time-of-check-to-time-of-use gap, supports immediate invalidation when relevant context changes, and creates …

Financial transaction processing systems, for example in payroll, can face challenges where validation is reactive, leading to the late discovery of complex discrepancies after payments are executed. A system and method are described for pre-execution validation of financial transactions. The system can function as a validation layer that applies business rules to batches of transaction data using techniques such as set-based processing. This approach can identify potential anomalies across large datasets before execution. For detected anomalies, a generative model can produce a human-readable explanation detailing a potential rule violation and the associated data. This pre-execution identification and contextualization of potential …
Continuous Dimension Extraction For Semantic Product Organization, Nathan Grabaskas
Continuous Dimension Extraction For Semantic Product Organization, Nathan Grabaskas
Defensive Publications Series
Systems for organizing products on digital commerce platforms can be limited by rigid taxonomies that may not capture nuanced attributes, and some high-dimensional vector representations can lack interpretability. A computational framework can transform product information into a semantically organized and navigable space. The framework can encode products into high-dimensional vectors and then employ two parallel processes. One path may use clustering algorithms and generative language models to group products into labeled sub-archetypes. A second path may use non-linear dimensionality reduction followed by an iterative principal component analysis to extract and label continuous trade-off axes from the data. The resulting clusters …
Steering Generative Ai Responses By Predicting User Intentions Using Slms And Behavioral Telemetry, Rachit Mathur, Payal Shah
Steering Generative Ai Responses By Predicting User Intentions Using Slms And Behavioral Telemetry, Rachit Mathur, Payal Shah
Defensive Publications Series
Current conversational AI systems rely on monotonic streaming, requiring users to wait for complete responses before correcting misinterpretations. This disclosure describes a bifurcated dual-dispatch architecture that steers generative AI outputs mid-stream. By pairing a localized Small Language Model (SLM) shadow parser with a high-capacity frontier LLM, the system dynamically analyzes real-time client-side behavioral telemetry - including keystroke dwell times, backspace mutation ratios, and paste metadata to predict user intent and cognitive friction. When volatile semantic nodes or potential intent mismatches are detected, the SLM executes pre-emptive mitigations by tuning inference hyperparameters (such as temperature) or surfacing non-blocking, inline "intent chips" …
Degree Assortativity And Estimation Of Degree Distribution In A Contact Network Of People Who Inject Drugs, Peter Geissert
Degree Assortativity And Estimation Of Degree Distribution In A Contact Network Of People Who Inject Drugs, Peter Geissert
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation analyzes data from a respondent driven sampling (RDS) study of people who inject drugs in Portland, OR. The objective was to assess assumptions for the use of weighted estimators to estimate a population physical contact (syringe sharing) network degree distribution.
Visualization of degree distribution for social and physical networks, Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests of difference, and kernel tests of equivalence were used for comparison of distributions. Spearman's rho and GAM non-parametric regression models were used to test for association and assess non-monotonic relationship. The validity of Markov chain assumptions for RDS was assessed using a transition matrix, Markov chain graphs, …

Teaching Individuals With Autism To Mand For Choice-Making Opportunities, Sarah T. Kong
Teaching Individuals With Autism To Mand For Choice-Making Opportunities, Sarah T. Kong
Doctoral Dissertations - College of Arts and Sciences
The integration of choice-making opportunities into behavior analytic treatment has produced improvements in the lives of individuals with autism. Although researchers have focused on improving staff presentation of choice-making opportunities (Van der Meer et al., 2017), this approach places choice-making under the stimulus control of staff initiations and may result in missed opportunities for the child to make choices when it is most valuable to them. We evaluated the effectiveness of a mand training procedure to teach individuals with autism to request choice-making opportunities. Single trials were interspersed into participants’ typical treatment programming and contexts were designed to establish the …

Standardizing Tracheostomy And Laryngectomy Terminology For Patient Safety: Global Outlook, Naomi Nancy Simon Walter, Michael J. Brenner, Vinciya Pandian
Standardizing Tracheostomy And Laryngectomy Terminology For Patient Safety: Global Outlook, Naomi Nancy Simon Walter, Michael J. Brenner, Vinciya Pandian
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Patients who breathe “through the neck only” following tracheostomy or total laryngectomy cannot be ventilated through the mouth or nose. Misunderstanding or misuse of airway terminology can lead to catastrophic management errors, including hypoxia, brain injury, or death. Despite growing awareness, no standardized, patient-centered nomenclature exists for describing airway anatomy in these populations.
Purpose: To clarify and standardize terminology describing tracheostomy and laryngectomy airway anatomy by conducting a global mixed methods survey of healthcare professionals (HCPs), patients, families, and caregivers (PFCs), promoting accuracy, safety, and patient-centeredness in communication.
Methods: A multidisciplinary team developed and iteratively refined a survey instrument …

Harvest And Retting Method Alter The Composition Of Hemp Fiber For High Performance Concrete, Abigail Lazier, Jennifer Macadam, Srishti Banerji, Bruce Bugbee
Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
Recently, the use of natural fibers in place of polymer fibers in high performance concrete has been explored for improved mechanical properties (including reduced spalling) and greater sustainability. This project aims to recycle biomass waste produced by the medical cannabis industry by using it in concrete. We have designed and conducted multiple studies to determine efficient methods for fiber harvest and processing from our in-house medical cannabis waste. Harvest method, (including fresh harvest and defoliation or physically induced senescence), storage condition, ( 4 C or 25 C), and processing technique, (mechanical or biological) were trialed. Additionally, we used standard forage …
