Suspended Futures: Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Black Adult Males Affected By Exclusionary Discipline, Tamara Jones
Suspended Futures: Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Black Adult Males Affected By Exclusionary Discipline, Tamara Jones
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Black males continue to experience exclusionary discipline at disproportionately high rates in American schools, often resulting in academic disruption and long-term educational and social consequences. While existing research had extensively documented disciplinary disparities, less attention had been given to how Black males interpret and make meaning of these experiences over time. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of Black adult males who experienced exclusionary discipline during their secondary school years and examined how they now make sense of those experiences in adulthood. Grounded in Critical Race Theory and Social Cognitive Theory, the study focused on participants’ perceptions of …

When The Why Is Greater Than The What: "Exploring School Deans' Discipline Decision Making: A Grounded Theory Investigation Into Disciplinary Practices & Policies At The School Level", Lashawn S. Russ-Porterfield
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This constructivist grounded theory study investigated how school deans interpret and enact disciplinary decision-making within the complex social, organizational, and policy environments of contemporary secondary schools. Despite increasing advocacy for restorative and non-exclusionary disciplinary approaches, exclusionary practices—such as out-of-school suspension—remain prevalent, often contributing to disproportionality and adverse student outcomes. The purpose of this study was to generate a grounded theory explaining how contextual, relational, and structural factors shape deans’ decisions when selecting between exclusionary and restorative responses to student behavior.
Twenty-one deans from secondary schools in north Florida participated in semi-structured interviews. Data collection and analysis followed Charmaz’s (2014) constructivist …
Integrating Inquiry, Peer Observation, And Professional Learning Communities: Teachers’ Experiences With A Job-Embedded Professional Learning Design, Tiffany Outman

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
The rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into higher education is reshaping interaction within digital learning environments. As AI-enabled tools such as conversational agents and automated feedback systems become embedded in Learning Management Systems (LMSs), questions arise regarding how these systems can support social presence, dialogue, and human-centered pedagogy without reproducing the attention-driven logics of commercial social media. This paper presents a conceptual, design-oriented framework for human-centered LMS design inspired by selected interactional affordances of Social Network Sites (SNSs). Drawing on social presence theory, post-process pedagogy, and hyperpedagogy, the framework articulates four interrelated design dimensions—Familiar Interaction, Dialogic Feedback, Community …
The Judicial Voice On The Courts Of Appeals, Allison Orr Larsen, Neal Devins
The Judicial Voice On The Courts Of Appeals, Allison Orr Larsen, Neal Devins
Faculty Publications
The judicial voice on an appellate court typically speaks in the collective, so when a judge chooses to go solo—either in a dissent or a concurrence—that act deserves a close look. Separate opinions on the U.S. Supreme Court are common because the Justices have strong incentives to articulate a distinctive personal jurisprudence. But lower court judges have always been more reluctant to write separately, and for good reason. The institutional design and longstanding practices of the U.S. courts of appeals are very different from the Supreme Court: Lower appellate court judges are bound by precedent in a different way, rarely …

A Structured Review Of Emerging Prompt Instability Indices (Piis) To Evaluate The Reproducibility Of Prompt-Driven Image Segmentation Models, Katie Stinson, Toufeeq Ahmed Syed
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Prompt-aware image segmentation has introduced new flexibility by allowing models to incorporate user-provided cues, such as points, boxes, or text prompts, to guide object delineation across diverse imaging domains. This flexibility introduces a fundamental challenge: ensuring segmentation results remain reproducible when prompts are altered. Minor variations in prompts produce substantially different outputs, raising concerns about the reliability and scientific validity of research and clinical applications. This paper conducts a structured review of emerging Prompt Instability Indices (PIIs), quantitative measures developed to assess the reproducibility of prompt-driven segmentation models. A systematic search of PubMed and arXiv (2020-2025) identified relevant studies, analyzed …

Aims: Calcified nodules (CNs) contribute to 3-5% of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Identifying peri-calcific lipid-rich areas is challenging with conventional imaging but feasible using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). This YELLOW III substudy investigated the impact of maximal lipid-lowering on CN morphology and lipid content over 26 weeks.
Methods and results: Patients with stable CAD and lipid-rich, non-obstructive plaques (lipid arc >90°, FCT < 120 µm on OCT) received Evolocumab (140 mg biweekly) plus maximally tolerated statins. Lesions were evaluated at baseline and 26 weeks using combined NIRS-IVUS and OCT. Exploratory endpoints were the maximum 4 mm lipid core burden index (LCBI) in segments containing CNs (maxLCBI4mm-CN) and morphological changes in CN. Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate temporal changes and group interactions. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) transcriptomics were analysed. Among 110 patients, 43 (39.1%) had CNs. A total of 73 paired CNs were analysed for morphology, of which 65 CNs were ≥4 mm. CNs with lipid signal (CNLS) demonstrated a significant reduction in maxLCBI4mm-CN from 176.8 to 113.3 (β = -63.51 ± 17.63; P < 0.001), whereas no change was observed in dense CNs (P = 0.317). Morphological parameters remained largely unchanged in both groups. A modest increase in the surrounding calcium arc was observed in CNLS (P = 0.018), while depth showed a differential change …

The exponential growth of Large Language Models (LLMs) continues to highlight the need for efficient strategies to meet ever-expanding computational and data demands. This survey provides a comprehensive analysis of two complementary paradigms: Knowledge Distillation (KD) and Dataset Distillation (DD), both aimed at compressing LLMs while preserving their advanced reasoning capabilities and linguistic diversity. We first examine key methodologies in KD, such as task-specific alignment, rationale-based training, and multi-teacher frameworks, alongside DD techniques that synthesize compact, high-impact datasets through optimization-based gradient matching, latent space regularization, and generative synthesis. Building on these foundations, we explore how integrating KD and DD can …

Radiotherapy plays a vital role in cancer treatment, yet its effects on patients' nutritional status can precipitate muscle loss, with significant implications for treatment tolerance and outcomes. Evidence from high-income countries increasingly links radiation-induced muscle loss to adverse clinical outcomes. In contrast, low- and middle-income countries face a stark evidence gap, despite the heightened vulnerability of cancer patients in these settings due to delayed diagnosis, limited access to care, and high rates of co-morbidities. This paper highlights the critical gaps in nutritional care for radiotherapy patients in low- and middle-income countries.
