"Sing It Again": Linguistic Medievalisms In Geoffrey Hill And Seamus Heaney, Christian Cotten-Dixon Jan 2026

"Sing It Again": Linguistic Medievalisms In Geoffrey Hill And Seamus Heaney, Christian Cotten-Dixon

Honors College Theses

This study examines the use of early medieval structure and language in the poetry of Seamus Heaney and Geoffrey Hill, focusing on their near-contemporary collections, North and Mercian Hymns. Both collections use etymological and poetic structures to fashion an imagined medieval past in order to discuss personal and cultural narratives of history. Leveraging these structures in poetry and digging them out of past strata like a material artifact, Heaney and Hill collapse linear systems of time and language and access past word forms even as they evolve. This archaeological approach to poetry gives them the means to place the …

The Sting Of The Women Airforce Service Pilots: The Fight For Militarization And Recognition, Cassandra Cates Jan 2026

The Sting Of The Women Airforce Service Pilots: The Fight For Militarization And Recognition, Cassandra Cates

Honors College Theses

The Women Airforce Service Pilots, commonly known as the WASPs, were the first women to fly military planes for the United States. Serving during World War II, the main goal of the WASPs was to relieve the men flying planes domestically, so the men could serve overseas. But despite their dedicated wartime service, negative press and an unfavorable Congressional investigation prevented the WASPs from being fully recognized in 1944, and consequently militarized. Once they were disbanded near war’s end, the WASPs returned to civilian life. Not until the 1970s did the WASPs start to speak out about their service and …

Rydberg Atom Arrays For Electric Field Sensing, James P. Hamilton Jan 2026

Rydberg Atom Arrays For Electric Field Sensing, James P. Hamilton

Honors College Theses

Rydberg atoms, hydrogen-like atoms that can be excited to states of high principal quantum number that carry correspondingly large electric dipole moments, have become leading candidates for precision electric field sensing. Arrays of such atoms, each trapped in a focused laser beam called an “optical tweezer,” are a particularly promising platform, since the strong dipole-dipole interactions between neighboring atoms provide a resource unavailable in a single-atom sensor. This thesis develops a theoretical and numerical framework for electric field measurement in small Rydberg atom arrays. We begin with a two-level model of a single atom, derive the Hamiltonian and equations of …

Working Mule Or Sacrificial Lamb: Examining Agrarian Backlash And Populism In Rural Europe, Ava Elaine Rumsey Jan 2026

Working Mule Or Sacrificial Lamb: Examining Agrarian Backlash And Populism In Rural Europe, Ava Elaine Rumsey

Honors College Theses

This thesis examines to what extent populism has become a political force across rural and agrarian communities in the European Union from 2023 to 2026. It distinguishes between ‘structural’ shifts, meaning the broader transformations in agrarian political economy, and ‘policy’ shifts, meaning the cumulative impact of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform, notably its welfarist and regulatory priorities. This study draws on two types of evidence. First, it pulls from a wide range of secondary sources on the CAP and agrarian political transformation. Second, it analyzes the position papers, statements, and digital media of three organizations that represent important farming constituencies …

Public Functions And Private Resources, Zachary S. Price Jan 2026

Public Functions And Private Resources, Zachary S. Price

Faculty Scholarship

At the federal level, the boundary between public and private functions is under pressure. On top of longstanding trends toward privatizing government functions and running agencies like businesses, the second Trump administration has sought to enlist private resources more broadly for performing public functions. This Article for the Washington University Law Review’s symposium on “Taxing, Spending, and the Constitution” outlines constitutional principles for assessing such actions. Building on prior work, it explains that presidents may seek outside assistance in exercising “resource-independent” powers, meaning powers like the veto and pardon authorities that do not depend on congressionally authorized resources in …

A Deal's A Deal: The Obvious Problem In Patent Law, Robin C. Feldman, Gideon Schor Jan 2026

A Deal's A Deal: The Obvious Problem In Patent Law, Robin C. Feldman, Gideon Schor

Faculty Scholarship

Critics and industry alike agree that something is amiss in the market for medicines: Drug prices continue to rise, while various players point fingers, attributing the problem to different systemic inefficiencies. At the heart of this problem, however, lies the patent system, which provides the power that drives many of the strategic behaviors discussed in the literature.

A Deal’s a Deal suggests that a key element of patent law — obviousness doctrine — has been overlooked in the search for causes and solutions of the many distortions in pharmaceutical markets. This uniquely comprehensive Article examines obviousness doctrine from numerous angles: …

Exclusion By Design: Immigrant Racialization And Temporary Legal Status, Ming H. Chen, Jennifer M. Chacón, Shannon M. Gleeson Jan 2026

Exclusion By Design: Immigrant Racialization And Temporary Legal Status, Ming H. Chen, Jennifer M. Chacón, Shannon M. Gleeson

Faculty Scholarship

Migrant workers enter the United States on temporary visas more often than on green cards that lead to U.S. citizenship, and the majority come from countries whose emigrants would be classified as non-White in the United States. Even so, immigration scholarship gives short shrift to temporary statuses and often treats them as race neutral. This Article contributes to the growing body of critical migration studies by demonstrating how immigration law assigns meaning to the legal status of temporary migrants. We find that temporary legal statuses are designed in ways that unnecessarily foster social exclusion through a process of racialization and …

On The Surface: The Mural Of Shireen Abu Akleh As Space For Encounter, Saja Abd El Hai

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis examines a mural of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the city of Baqa al-Gharbiya as a site of political encounter. Rather than approaching the mural solely as a commemorative image, the study analyzes how it generated a series of interactions through acts of creation, defacement, restoration, performance, and digital circulation. Drawing on scholarship in visual culture, graffiti studies, and political theory, I argue that the mural operates as a gendered space of political encounter through which grief, resistance, and national identity are negotiated in public space. Methodologically, the project combines visual and contextual analysis with rhetorical criticism, …

Low crude protein (CP) diets can improve feed efficiency and reduce ammonia emissions, but negative impacts on broiler productivity can occur. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) supplementation in low CP diets on productivity, enzyme activity, neuropeptidergic gene expression, and behavior of broilers. A total of 360 male Ross 308 broilers were used in a factorial design experiment with two CP levels (19.5 and 18.0%) and three GABA levels (0, 100, and 200 mg/kg). Dietary CP and GABA levels did not significantly affect broiler productivity (P>0.05). Reducing CP in the diet increased amylase and …

Push Dose Vasopressors For The Treatment Of Hypotension, Jennifer Ann Dailey Jan 2026

Push Dose Vasopressors For The Treatment Of Hypotension, Jennifer Ann Dailey

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Millions of Americans experience life-threatening hypotension. Prolonged hypotension results in acute kidney injury, myocardial injury, even cardiac arrest, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality (Khanna et al., 2019; Schuurmans et al., 2024; Singer et al., 2022). Hypotension and its associated complications result in higher hospital costs (Keuffel et al., 2018). While there is a high incidence of hypotension among ICU patients, a smaller percentage of patients require vasopressor infusions regionally and nationally (Moin et al., 2025; Pollard et al., 2019). Local data from a community hospital within a North Texas suburb demonstrates a larger percentage of ICU patients …

The Energy Change Of Graphs Under Some Edges Deletions, Huan Lei Shi, Wen Huan Wang, Wasin So Jan 2026

The Energy Change Of Graphs Under Some Edges Deletions, Huan Lei Shi, Wen Huan Wang, Wasin So

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The energy ε(G) of a graph G is the sum of the absolute values of all the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. Gutman (2001) pointed out a problem to characterize the graph G and the edge e of G such that ε(G − e) ⩽ ε(G). Tang et al. (2023) gave a sufficient condition for ε(G − e) ⩽ ε(G), where e is not necessarily a cut-edge set or a cut edge. We deduce here a stronger conclusion than the results obtained by Tang et al. (2023). Our findings cover some known conclusions, such as the results obtained by Gutman …

Re-Evaluating Virtual Reality Manipulation Techniques For Precise Alignment Of Complex 3d Objects, Cherelle Connor, Alexander Giovannelli, Leonardo Pavanatto, Francielly Rodrigues, Haichao Miao, Vuthea Chheang, Brian Giera, Peer Timo Bremer, Doug A. Bowman Jan 2026

Re-Evaluating Virtual Reality Manipulation Techniques For Precise Alignment Of Complex 3d Objects, Cherelle Connor, Alexander Giovannelli, Leonardo Pavanatto, Francielly Rodrigues, Haichao Miao, Vuthea Chheang, Brian Giera, Peer Timo Bremer, Doug A. Bowman

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Prior research has developed a number of manipulation techniques that can achieve precise object placement in virtual reality, but studies of these techniques typically use simple objects. We conducted a study comparing two existing techniques, (AMP-IT and WISDOM), during alignment of objects with complex geometry to evaluate the potential influence of geometric complexity on performance, usability, workload and preference. Our findings indicate that participants had faster completion times and higher trial completion rates with AMP-IT on high-precision alignment tasks, contrary to earlier findings that used simple objects. Yet WISDOM is still preferred and considered more usable, despite increased workload and …

Real-Time Defect Detection In Ceramic Additive Manufacturing Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks, Dylan Doan, Amir Armani, Marcia Golmohamadi Jan 2026

Real-Time Defect Detection In Ceramic Additive Manufacturing Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks, Dylan Doan, Amir Armani, Marcia Golmohamadi

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Although ceramic additive manufacturing technologies have greatly advanced over the past decade, they are still far from perfect. Even small printing defects can have a severe impact on the mechanical properties of additively manufactured ceramic parts due to their low fracture toughness. The objective of this study was to detect these defects during the printing process for a new ceramic additive manufacturing technique, called ceramic on-demand extrusion (CODE). Images were collected, pre-processed, augmented, and separated based on their distinctive classes (i.e., type of defects). Deep convolutional neural networks were developed to identify multiple types of defects in real-time.

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Industry 4.0 has transformed industries by accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence of things (AIoT); however, it has also led to security risks, such as data leakage. Existing data protection research focuses on network layers, whereas application-layer rating systems rely on subjective evaluations, limiting consistency and applicability. This study proposes a scalable and objective AIoT security rating framework that clarifies ambiguities in the five-question rating system of the Korean Intellectual Property Office and unifies fragmented managerial and technical rating systems. By leveraging large language models (LLMs), the framework integrates a security rating model based on 14 impact factors with automated …

Seeds Of Sovereignty: Critical Public Health, Radical Sisterhood, And The Fight For Agricultural Justice, Andrew L. Carter Jan 2026

Seeds Of Sovereignty: Critical Public Health, Radical Sisterhood, And The Fight For Agricultural Justice, Andrew L. Carter

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This book explores the historical and contemporary influence of African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) women farmers in the fight for food justice. ACB foodways have been dismantled over time due to centuries of settler colonialism, discriminatory agricultural policies, land and knowledge theft, cultural erasure, and direct forms of violence and intimidation—creating vast inequities in today’s food system. At the same time, mainstream public health responses to food insecurity and access in ACB communities often focus on short-term solutions that do not empower local communities and keep the status quo intact. These approaches overlook the broader structural constraints that maintain and …
