Municipal Budgeting In Times Of Crisis: A Study Of Fiscal Conjunctures In Three U.S. Cities, Mark Davidson, Kevin Ward Jan 2026

Municipal Budgeting In Times Of Crisis: A Study Of Fiscal Conjunctures In Three U.S. Cities, Mark Davidson, Kevin Ward

Geography

Since the late 1950s and early 1960s, U.S. cities have been associated with various types of crises. Recent decades have been no exception, with the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and COVID-19 pandemic being external events that severely disrupted U.S. urban fiscal governance. This disruption involves both the generation of new challenges (e.g., housing market declines, social distancing) and a worsening of longstanding urban challenges relating to, for example, housing, inequality, racism, segregation, and so on. This paper focuses on how the internal fiscal governance of three U.S. cities—Buffalo, Nashville, and San Jose—navigated the GFC and COVID-19 pandemic. We find that …

Quantum General Relativity V2, James Glimm, James Glimm Jan 2026

Quantum General Relativity V2, James Glimm, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

We construct a quantum general relativity theory.. The construction includes specification of a cosmological model. Based on type Ia supernova data, the model has zero dark energy and zero cosmological constant.

The analysis is at the level of theoretical physics, with some mathematical details omitted.

Mathematicly Rigorous Quantum General Relativity, I: Pure, James Glimm Jan 2026

Mathematicly Rigorous Quantum General Relativity, I: Pure, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A pure general relativity (quantum or classical) is one lacking in matter. Such a field has a Lorentzian space time geometry. A renormalization perturbative expansion, truncated to all finite orders, establishes both the quantum and the general relativity theory with full mathematical rigor.

Weak Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Euler Limits, James Glimm Jan 2026

Weak Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Euler Limits, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The existence of a weak solution of the incompressible isothermal Navier-Stokes equation with given initial conditions in the Sobolev space $\mathcal{H}_{-2}$ for energy fluctuations and in $\mathcal{H}_{-3}$ for enstrophy fluctuations is assumed. The existence is uniform with respect to the Euler limit of zero viscosity $\nu$. Thus, existence of weak solutions of the Euler equation with given initial conditions is established, and these Euler solutions are the zero viscosity limit of Navier-Stokes solutions, provided the Navier-Stokes solutions exist.

The Yang-Mills Field: The Fermion Sign Problem, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Yang-Mills Field: The Fermion Sign Problem, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A mathematical resolution of the Fermion sign problem is accomplished based on the theory of homology groups and thimbles. The original contribution of this paper is the mathematicly rigorous convergence of residual states. The residual states remain after use of a rigorous Picard-Lefschetz saddle point optimization.

The proofs depend on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production.

Two Yang-Mills gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Two pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The construction is based on the axial gauge, ghost states, the BRST framework and Gribov extension of the Hamiltonian, with a loop expansion cutoff to all finite orders for the dynamics.

The construction is established by renormalized perturbation theory to all finite orders.

The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production

A previously constructed pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theory is shown to satisfy all Osterwalder Schrader axioms.

Non-Smooth Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Means, James Glimm, Jarret Petrillo Jan 2026

Non-Smooth Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Means, James Glimm, Jarret Petrillo

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Non-smooth (finite time blowup) Leray-Hopf solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation are constructed. The initial data for blowup is characterized by nonzero energy related turbulent fluctuations. The construction occurs in a finite periodic cube T3. The mean value of a weak solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is identified as a smooth solution of the Navier-Stokes equation.

General Relativity: Existence, James Glimm Jan 2026

General Relativity: Existence, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A mathematically rigorous renormalized perturbative expansion, truncated to all finite orders, establishes the existence of quantum general relativity theories with Fermion matter fields. The expansion is initialized with the selection of a vacuum state.

Distinct infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) vacuum states are considered. The IR vacuum state defines a cosmology model. The UV vacuum state defines a black hole model.

The vacuum state is initialized with a $\mathfrak{o}^3$ gauge Lie algebra defining a quark-gluon plasma. With this choice, string theory is avoided.

Finite order renormalized perturbation theory, defined using Bosons to avoid Fermion sign cancellation, is convergent to all …

The Pure Yang-Mills Field, Repeated Blowups, James Glimm, James G. Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field, Repeated Blowups, James Glimm, James G. Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The temporal scaling of the quantum Yang-Mills solution is characterized by analytic solutions for a limited time interval, ended by a discontinuity (blowup).

For general initial conditions, there will be a finite series of these discontinuities.

The time asymptotic limit of this series of discontinuities is given as the mean of these solutions, starting with the mean of the initial data. The time asymptote is the solution in $\mathcal{S}'$ of the heat equation as a stochastic process.

The time asymptote satisfies the cluster axiom, to complete the requirements for a solution of the Millennium Yang-Mills problem.

The principle of a …

The Boson Yang-Mills Field: The Loop Expansion, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Boson Yang-Mills Field: The Loop Expansion, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates convergence of the loop expansion for Yang-Mills fields.

The loop construction of perturbation theory is based on the axial gauge, ghost states, the BRST framework and the Gribov extension of the Hamiltonian, with the loop expansion perturbatively renormalizable.

The construction is established by renormalized perturbation theory convergent to all finite orders.

Two distinct Yang-Mills theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production.

The paper has sufficient generality to include existence for all cases that …

Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) can develop as an acquired systemic disease. However, cases of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) with concurrent CDI are rare. We herein report a case of EGPA following CDI. A 68-year-old woman with a 30-year history of sinusitis and asthma developed CDI, followed by severe renal dysfunction with eosinophilia and elevated myeloperoxidase-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody levels. A renal biopsy confirmed EGPA. Intensive treatment resulted in dialysis discontinuation, while partial improvement in arginine vasopressin secretion suggested a potential link between EGPA and CDI. We also conducted a literature review on concurrent EGPA and CDI. Clinicians should be aware …

Introduction

Proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits (PGNMID) is a form of monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance, characterized by kidney injury caused by monoclonal immunoglobulin deposition in the glomeruli. While detectable clones are only found in 20–30% of PGNMID, plasma cell- or B-cell-targeting therapies are suggested to be effective. Recent case reports suggested immune dysregulation, such as viral infections or vaccinations, could potentially trigger the onset or relapse of PGNMID. Here, we report a case of PGNMID without detectable clones, which relapsed after viral enteritis, presenting with severe acute kidney injury (AKI) and nephrotic syndrome.

Background and aims: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) are chronic cholestatic liver diseases with overlapping features but distinct biology. While bile acids (BAs) are central to cholestatic pathophysiology, the extent to which circulating BAs define disease-specific states remains unclear.

Methods: Plasma BA profiling and clinical laboratory tests were performed in patients with PSC (n = 269), PBC (n = 262), and matched controls (n = 269/262), respectively. BA composition, conjugation patterns, and pool characteristics were compared within and across diseases. Associations with hepatic decompensation were evaluated using univariable and exploratory multivariable analyses, including comparison with established …

Pediatric tracheobronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), also called pulmonary MEC, is a rare malignant primary lung neoplasm that is typically found in the large airways. Patients may present with symptoms such as cough, pneumonia, fever, hemoptysis, dyspnea, wheezing, chest pain, weight loss, and fatigue. These nonspecific symptoms (or lack of symptoms in some cases) often result in a delayed diagnosis. Chest CT typically demonstrates findings consistent with bronchial obstruction and diagnosis is made via histopathology. Surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment and children often have favorable outcomes. Here we present four cases of tracheobronchial MEC in children treated at three …

The sale, distribution, and indiscriminate use of new tobacco and nicotine products have multiplied. The most relevant products are: electronic cigarettes (ECs), heated tobacco (HT), and nicotine pouches (NPs). From the tobacco industry and its related health sectors, and even from some health institutions with no clear influence from this industry, the use of all these devices is being promoted as an excellent harm reduction strategy for those conventional tobacco smokers who do not want to or cannot quit smoking. This paper reviewed the lack of scientific evidence of this strategy.
