WNT4 is a secreted protein that plays a critical role in the regulation of cell fate and embryogenesis. Biallelic variants in WNT4 have been linked to SERKAL syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by 46,XX sex reversal and dysgenesis of the kidneys, adrenals, and lungs. SERKAL syndrome has only been described in a single consanguineous kindred with four affected fetuses. Additional features seen in a subset of affected fetuses included ventricular septal defect (VSD), congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), and orofacial clefting (OFC). To determine if these additional features were likely to be caused by WNT4 deficiency, we used machine learning …

The senescent cell (SC) fate is linked to aging, multiple disorders and diseases, and physical dysfunction. Senolytics, agents that selectively eliminate 30%-70% of SCs, act by transiently disabling the senescent cell antiapoptotic pathways (SCAPs), which defend those SCs that are proapoptotic and pro-inflammatory from their own senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Consistent with this, a JAK/STAT inhibitor, Ruxolitinib, which attenuates the pro-inflammatory SASP of senescent human preadipocytes, caused them to become "senolytic-resistant". Administering senolytics to obese mice selectively decreased the abundance of the subset of SCs that is pro-inflammatory. In cell cultures, the 30%-70% of human senescent preadipocytes or human umbilical …

Look-Ahead Cyber-Threat Forecasting For Connected And Automated Transport: A Spatio-Temporal Graph Learning Approach, Md Al Amin, Mohammad Shafat Ahsan, Jannatul Maua, Arifa Akter Eva, M.F. Mridha, Md. Jakir Hossen Jan 2026

Look-Ahead Cyber-Threat Forecasting For Connected And Automated Transport: A Spatio-Temporal Graph Learning Approach, Md Al Amin, Mohammad Shafat Ahsan, Jannatul Maua, Arifa Akter Eva, M.F. Mridha, Md. Jakir Hossen

Student Publications [Scholarly]

Modern intelligent transportation systems (ITS) increasingly rely on connected electronic control units (ECUs), exposing in-vehicle networks to cyber-attacks such as message injection on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. While prior work has focused on post-factum detection, this paper addresses the underexplored task of forecasting cyber-attacks before they occur. We propose a spatio-temporal graph neural network (STGNN) architecture that models CAN traffic as a dynamic graph sequence, where nodes represent active CAN IDs and edges capture statistical co-activation patterns. Each graph snapshot encodes temporal features such as inter-arrival statistics and entropy, and is processed using graph attention layers followed by …

Time-Varying, Frequency-Domain, And Quantile Spillovers Across Energy And Financial Markets Under Climate Policy Uncertainty: Evidence From Tvp-Var-Sv, Bk, And Qvar Models, Md Qamruzzaman, Abdulrahman Alomair, Mohammed Alomair, Sylvia Kor

Student Publications [Scholarly]

The study explores how much area is influenced by climate policy uncertainty (CPU), which adjusts the dynamics of volatility and cross-market spillovers among European electricity, energy commodities, carbon markets, and financial assets, thereby explaining the mechanisms affected by the existing sustainability transition. Using high-frequency market data, we combine an econometric architecture linking a time-varying parameter VAR to stochastic volatility, Barunik–Krehlik frequency-domain connectedness, and quantile-VAR methods, thereby enabling the capture of horizon-specific and regime-dependent risk transmission. The discussion shows that the CPU is a structural amplifying agent of market interconnectedness, which has its most substantial impacts in long-horizon and downside regimes. …

Attention-Based Geo–Textual Fusion Network For Disaster Risk Prediction, Mohammad Shafat Ahsan, Mst Sanjida Alam, Syed Sajjad Ahmed, Md Tanzimul Islam, Hashibul Ahsan Shoaib, M.F. Mridha, Md. Jakir Hossen

Student Publications [Scholarly]

Natural disasters pose recurring threats to human life and infrastructure, demanding intelligent systems that can process heterogeneous data streams and provide actionable insights in real time. Existing approaches often treat textual signals from social media and emergency communications separately from spatial hazard attributes, limiting their effectiveness in capturing the full complexity of evolving crises. This paper proposes an AI-driven geo–textual intelligence framework that integrates disaster-related text with GIS-based hazard features for real-time risk prediction and evacuation planning. The framework employs contextual text encoders and a neural GIS encoder, fused through an attention mechanism that dynamically weights cross-modal signals. Experiments on …

“I Have Already Lost My Kids”: Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason, Dawn Beichner-Thomas Jan 2026

“I Have Already Lost My Kids”: Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason, Dawn Beichner-Thomas

Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences

Although women represent a small proportion of the incarcerated population globally, their rate of incarceration in the United States has increased dramatically over the past four decades, outpacing that of men. As carceral trends return to pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels, jail populations continue to rise, with most incarcerated women being mothers of young children. Yet, research on motherhood behind bars has largely focused on prisons rather than jails. This study explores the mothering experiences of women incarcerated in two U.S. Midwestern jails, including both pretrial detainees and sentenced individuals. Using qualitative data from in-depth interviews with jailed mothers, the analysis examines …

This study examines filicide, the killing of a child by a parent or parental figure, using 25 years of data (1999–2023) from the National Incident-Based Reporting System (N = 3,974). Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze variations in offender, victim, and incident characteristics across four victim age categories: neonaticide (within 24 hr of birth), infanticide (1–364 days), child filicide (1–17 years), and adult filicide (18+ years). Results reveal significant differences in offender age, sex, race, weapon use, and victim demographics. Neonaticide is most often associated with younger female offenders and the use of personal weapons, while adult filicide …

'Punishing Death Dealers': Examining Claims To Expand The Death Penalty To People Who Deal Drugs, Joshua H. Stout Jan 2026

'Punishing Death Dealers': Examining Claims To Expand The Death Penalty To People Who Deal Drugs, Joshua H. Stout

Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences

In 1988, the Anti-Drug Abuse Act authorized the use of the death penalty for individuals who committed murder while involved in certain federal drug crimes. In recent years, as America has grappled with rising opioid overdose deaths, there has been an increase in calls for expanding murder charges and capital punishment for individuals who deliver drugs that result in an overdose death. Utilizing content analysis of news media and presidential speeches, this paper explores the claims-making process surrounding the arguments in favor of sentencing people who deal drugs to death during the 1980s and the contemporary opioid crisis. Findings demonstrate …

“… It's Google That's Big Brother”: The Symbiosis Between Icac Investigators And The Private Sector Regarding Encryption And Privacy, Christopher G. Brewer, Kevin F. Steinmetz, Don Kurtz, Brian Schaefer Jan 2026

“… It's Google That's Big Brother”: The Symbiosis Between Icac Investigators And The Private Sector Regarding Encryption And Privacy, Christopher G. Brewer, Kevin F. Steinmetz, Don Kurtz, Brian Schaefer

Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences

Encryption technologies have become ubiquitous for both individual and commercial sectors. Perhaps no realm of law enforcement is so acutely affected by encryption than cybercrime, including internet crimes against children (ICAC) personnel. There exist a variety of encryption-based tools and authentication measures available to help online child sexual abusers and consumers of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) hide their activities and obstruct law enforcement efforts to gather evidence of criminal activity. Established here is the idea that ICAC investigative practice is ultimately shaped by these technologies as well as the relationship between the distributors of these technologies and private platforms …

“If You Think This Vilifies The Police, Then You Think The Police Are Villains”: Teaching Reparations Won As An Antidote To Copaganda, Kaitlyn Selman, Hannah Carson Baggett, Justin Turner Jan 2026

“If You Think This Vilifies The Police, Then You Think The Police Are Villains”: Teaching Reparations Won As An Antidote To Copaganda, Kaitlyn Selman, Hannah Carson Baggett, Justin Turner

Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences

Building on prior research about copaganda and pro-police socialization, we argue that the Reparations Won curriculum in Chicago Public Schools is an antidote to police legitimization efforts in K-12 schools. Specifically, the curriculum affirms student experiences that are not accounted for nor deemed possible in a world built by and for policing; it emphasizes relationship-building and centers definitions of community that resist the alienation required for such a world; and it facilitates an understanding of local histories as inseparable from broader social structures. We conclude that in an era of contested curricula, Reparations Won provides the structure needed to grapple …

Examining The Dynamics Between Criminal Justice Campaign Messaging, News Coverage, Public Policy Mood, And Voter Participation In Judicial Elections, Hayley Munir, Marcy Shieh, Michael Catalano Jan 2026

Examining The Dynamics Between Criminal Justice Campaign Messaging, News Coverage, Public Policy Mood, And Voter Participation In Judicial Elections, Hayley Munir, Marcy Shieh, Michael Catalano

Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences

Objective

In low-information elections, any amount of information can be decisive in voter behavior, including the choice of whether to make a choice in each race. In judicial elections, often low-information affairs, rhetoric about criminal justice typically attracts the most attention of potential voters. Given the nature of these judicial races, voter knowledge on candidates relies on a variety of state- and race-level contextual factors, including issues of law and order, a key feature of judicial races as highlighted in campaign advertising. We examine the impact of crime rhetoric in judicial campaign ads, front-page news coverage of criminal cases, and …

Conceptualizing The Receipt Of Unfair School Discipline Through A Betrayal Trauma Lens, Charles Bell, Alexia Angton, Sarah Franklin, Michayla Mack, Pavel Ahmed Jan 2026

Conceptualizing The Receipt Of Unfair School Discipline Through A Betrayal Trauma Lens, Charles Bell, Alexia Angton, Sarah Franklin, Michayla Mack, Pavel Ahmed

Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences

We contribute to the literature on school discipline by investigating why some Black students, parents, and advocates perceived particular punishments as unfair. Using Betrayal Trauma Theory (BTT) as a framework, we conducted qualitative interviews with twelve Black parents and five community activists who assisted Black children throughout the school discipline process and perceived such punishments as unfair. We also interviewed four Black children who received punishments at school that they perceived as unfair. Participants reported that instances of unfair school punishment created barriers to graduation, criminalized Black students, and permitted victimization to occur on school grounds.

Municipal Budgeting In Times Of Crisis: A Study Of Fiscal Conjunctures In Three U.S. Cities, Mark Davidson, Kevin Ward Jan 2026

Municipal Budgeting In Times Of Crisis: A Study Of Fiscal Conjunctures In Three U.S. Cities, Mark Davidson, Kevin Ward

Geography

Since the late 1950s and early 1960s, U.S. cities have been associated with various types of crises. Recent decades have been no exception, with the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and COVID-19 pandemic being external events that severely disrupted U.S. urban fiscal governance. This disruption involves both the generation of new challenges (e.g., housing market declines, social distancing) and a worsening of longstanding urban challenges relating to, for example, housing, inequality, racism, segregation, and so on. This paper focuses on how the internal fiscal governance of three U.S. cities—Buffalo, Nashville, and San Jose—navigated the GFC and COVID-19 pandemic. We find that …

The analysis is at the level of theoretical physics, with some mathematical details omitted.

Mathematicly Rigorous Quantum General Relativity, I: Pure, James Glimm Jan 2026

Mathematicly Rigorous Quantum General Relativity, I: Pure, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A pure general relativity (quantum or classical) is one lacking in matter. Such a field has a Lorentzian space time geometry. A renormalization perturbative expansion, truncated to all finite orders, establishes both the quantum and the general relativity theory with full mathematical rigor.

Weak Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Euler Limits, James Glimm Jan 2026

Weak Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Euler Limits, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The existence of a weak solution of the incompressible isothermal Navier-Stokes equation with given initial conditions in the Sobolev space $\mathcal{H}_{-2}$ for energy fluctuations and in $\mathcal{H}_{-3}$ for enstrophy fluctuations is assumed. The existence is uniform with respect to the Euler limit of zero viscosity $\nu$. Thus, existence of weak solutions of the Euler equation with given initial conditions is established, and these Euler solutions are the zero viscosity limit of Navier-Stokes solutions, provided the Navier-Stokes solutions exist.

The Yang-Mills Field: The Fermion Sign Problem, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Yang-Mills Field: The Fermion Sign Problem, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A mathematical resolution of the Fermion sign problem is accomplished based on the theory of homology groups and thimbles. The original contribution of this paper is the mathematicly rigorous convergence of residual states. The residual states remain after use of a rigorous Picard-Lefschetz saddle point optimization.

The proofs depend on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production.

Two Yang-Mills gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field. I: Eistence, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Two pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The construction is based on the axial gauge, ghost states, the BRST framework and Gribov extension of the Hamiltonian, with a loop expansion cutoff to all finite orders for the dynamics.

The construction is established by renormalized perturbation theory to all finite orders.

The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production

Non-Smooth Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Means, James Glimm, Jarret Petrillo Jan 2026

Non-Smooth Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equation And Their Means, James Glimm, Jarret Petrillo

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Non-smooth (finite time blowup) Leray-Hopf solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation are constructed. The initial data for blowup is characterized by nonzero energy related turbulent fluctuations. The construction occurs in a finite periodic cube T3. The mean value of a weak solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is identified as a smooth solution of the Navier-Stokes equation.
