The Hypocrisy Of Data Governance, Zubair Shafiq, Olivia Figueira, Athina Markopoulou, Woodrow Hartzog, Michael Lavine Jan 2026

The Hypocrisy Of Data Governance, Zubair Shafiq, Olivia Figueira, Athina Markopoulou, Woodrow Hartzog, Michael Lavine

Faculty Scholarship

“Data governance” is an empty term, like a Rorschach inkblot just waiting to be filled with meaning. Tech companies take advantage of this ambiguity to craft narratives about their data-governance capabilities to fit their audience and purpose. On one hand, tech companies brag about their data-governance capabilities when it fits their business model (for example, to advertisers) and public image (for example, to their customers). On the other hand, tech companies claim that meaningful data governance is challenging or impossible when accountability is demanded.

In this Article, we argue that tech companies systematically misrepresent or selectively ignore their data-governance capabilities. …

Corporate Law's Duty Of Data Loyalty, Andy Serwin, Neil Richards, Woodrow Hartzog, Ryan Durrie Jan 2026

Corporate Law's Duty Of Data Loyalty, Andy Serwin, Neil Richards, Woodrow Hartzog, Ryan Durrie

Faculty Scholarship

Privacy law used to be a relatively tidy field, involving a few interesting but discrete topics like press disclosures of private facts, wiretapping, and the processing of personal data by internet companies. But as the digital revolution continues to disrupt area after area of human activity and software “is eating the world,” the core concerns of privacy law such as “when is it appropriate to process personal data?” have similarly entered field after field. Today, most fields of law, including discrimination law, antitrust, and international law, have found it necessary to reckon with the questions of informational harm and power …

Romanist-Bourgeois Property And The Development Of The Modern Capitalist World System, Anna Di Robilant Jan 2026

Romanist-Bourgeois Property And The Development Of The Modern Capitalist World System, Anna Di Robilant

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the role of Romanist-bourgeois property law in the development of the modern capitalist world system, focusing on how nineteenth-century jurists deliberately crafted and adapted Roman law-based property doctrines to address the evolving social relations of production in both Europe and its peripheries. Rather than viewing legal concepts as merely reflective of broader economic transformations, the author highlights the active role played by a professional class of jurists in shaping property law to legitimize and structure emergent capitalist class dynamics. The article critically engages with competing scholarly perspectives that either privilege market expansion or downplay class relations, arguing …

The Anti-Federalism Of Hr1, Nicole Huberfeld Jan 2026

The Anti-Federalism Of Hr1, Nicole Huberfeld

Faculty Scholarship

The budget reconciliation bill signed on July 4, 2025 (“HR1”) weakened the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its core goal of near-universal health insurance coverage. To maintain 2017 tax cuts, Congress curtailed the ACA’s Medicaid eligibility expansion; simultaneously, HR1 limited the kinds of options states have been able to exercise within Medicaid while pushing the costs of deep cuts down to states. This essay argues that HR1 embodies an anti-federalism approach, and that anti-federalism is not the same as federalizing health reforms. In the past, Congress sometimes federalized health care or public health reforms to respond to …

Regulating Crisis Pregnancy Centers After Nifla And Dobbs: Controversies Over When Government Is Imposing An Orthodoxy About Abortion, Linda C. Mcclain Jan 2026

Regulating Crisis Pregnancy Centers After Nifla And Dobbs: Controversies Over When Government Is Imposing An Orthodoxy About Abortion, Linda C. Mcclain

Faculty Scholarship

How does this broader sense of Barnette’s proscription of government from imposing “what shall be orthodox” implicate governmental restrictions on reproductive autonomy? Battles over reproductive freedom centrally implicate objections that government is unconstitutionally imposing a gender orthodoxy. Arguments for a right of personal autonomy embodying an antitotalitarian principle of liberty are arguments for a right to resist governmental imposition of an orthodoxy— for example, an idea about the natural or traditional role of women as mothers together with a view about how best to respect the sanctity of life. Rights to reproductive autonomy, grounded in personal autonomy and equality, …

Poincaré Invariance And The Unruh Effect, Alexandre Deur, Stanley J. Brodsky, Craig D. Roberts, Balša Terzić Jan 2026

Poincaré Invariance And The Unruh Effect, Alexandre Deur, Stanley J. Brodsky, Craig D. Roberts, Balša Terzić

Physics Faculty Publications

In quantum field theory, the vacuum is popularly considered to be a complex medium populated with virtual particle + antiparticle pairs. To an observer experiencing uniform acceleration, it is generally held that these virtual particles become real, appearing as a gas at a temperature that grows with the acceleration. This is the Unruh effect. However, it has been shown that vacuum complexity is an artifact produced by treating quantum field theory in a manner that does not manifestly enforce causality. Choosing a quantization approach that patently enforces causality, the quantum field theory vacuum is barren, bereft even of virtual particles. …

Unpolarized Gpds At Small X And Non-Zero Skewness, Yuri V. Kovchegov, M. Gabriel Santiago, Huachen Sun Jan 2026

Unpolarized Gpds At Small X And Non-Zero Skewness, Yuri V. Kovchegov, M. Gabriel Santiago, Huachen Sun

Physics Faculty Publications

We study the small-x asymptotics of unpolarized generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and generalized transverse momentum distributions (GTMDs). Unlike the previous works in the literature, we consider the case of non-zero (but small) skewness while allowing for non-linear contributions to the evolution equations. We first show that unpolarized GPDs and GTMDs at small x are related to the eikonal dipole amplitude N, whose small-x evolution is given by the BK/JIMWLK evolution equations, and to the odderon amplitude 𝒪, whose evolution is also known in the literature. We then show that the effect of non-zero skewness ξ ≠ 0 is to modify …

Next-To-Next-To-Leading Power Corrections To Unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering, Ian Balitsky, Alexei Prokudin Jan 2026

Next-To-Next-To-Leading Power Corrections To Unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering, Ian Balitsky, Alexei Prokudin

Physics Faculty Publications

Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) is a key tool for exploring the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon through Transverse Momentum Dependent parton distributions and fragmentation functions. While leading-power contributions to the SIDIS cross-section are well established, next-to-leading power (NLP) corrections of order 1/Q and next-to-next-to-leading power (NNLP) corrections of order 1/Q²  to the hadronic tensor have only recently begun to be systematically investigated. These corrections are essential for reliable phenomenology and interpretation of modern high-precision data. In recent papers by one of the authors, NNLP corrections to the Drell-Yan process were derived using the rapidity factorization formalism. In the present …

Inverse Problem In The Large Momentum Effective Theory Framework, Herve Dutrieux, Joe Karpie, Christopher J. Monahan, Kostas Orginos, Anatoly Radyushkin, David Richards, Savvas Zafeiropoulos Jan 2026

Inverse Problem In The Large Momentum Effective Theory Framework, Herve Dutrieux, Joe Karpie, Christopher J. Monahan, Kostas Orginos, Anatoly Radyushkin, David Richards, Savvas Zafeiropoulos

Physics Faculty Publications

One proposal to compute parton distributions from first principles is the large momentum effective theory (LaMET), which requires the Fourier transform of matrix elements computed nonperturbatively. Lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) provides calculations of these matrix elements over a finite range of Fourier harmonics that are often noisy or unreliable in the largest computed harmonics. It has been suggested that enforcing an exponential decay of the missing harmonics helps alleviate this issue. Using nonperturbative data, we show that the uncertainty introduced by this inverse problem in a realistic setup remains significant without very restrictive assumptions, and that the importance of the …

Physics Faculty Publications

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors combine high detection efficiency, low noise, and excellent timing resolution, making them a leading platform for photon-counting applications. However, despite decades of materials and fabrication research, detector performance has never been shown to match theoretical performance expectations. Here, we demonstrate in situ tuning of a detector from its typical, suboptimal operation, to a regime limited only by material quality, allowing the device to reach its intrinsic performance limit. Our approach is based on current-biased superconducting “rails” placed on either side of the detector that redistribute current across its width to achieve peak performance. This technique reduces …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Student Publications

Poor neck posture during prolonged device use contributes to musculoskeletal disorders affecting millions worldwide. Existing posture monitoring solutions rely on camera-based systems or complex multi-sensor arrays, limiting their practicality for continuous daily use. We present a lightweight, chest-worn pendant using a single 6-axis IMU (accelerometer and gyroscope) for real-time classification of seven neck posture states: neutral, mild flexion, moderate flexion, severe flexion, extension, lateral tilt, and lying. Our approach employs an ensemble architecture combining bidirectional LSTM, Transformer encoder, and 1D-CNN models with learnable fusion weights. To address limited training data, we apply aggressive data augmentation (30x multiplication) including noise injection, …

Bond Behavior Of Uhpc-Nsc Interfaces For Bridge Deck Repair Under Flexural Loading, Larissa Santiago La Banca Jan 2026

Bond Behavior Of Uhpc-Nsc Interfaces For Bridge Deck Repair Under Flexural Loading, Larissa Santiago La Banca

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

The use of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has increased due to its superior mechanical properties and strong bond with normal-strength concrete (NSC). It is widely used as a repair material, particularly in bridge decks, where maintenance remains a challenge. However, the interface between UHPC and NSC is often the weakest region of the composite system and requires careful evaluation.

This study investigates the bond behavior between UHPC and NSC using different surface preparations, test setups, and UHPC materials. The experimental program included unreinforced beams with vertical interfaces tested under three- and four-point flexural loading, and reinforced slabs with horizontal interfaces …

Dystop: Dynamic Staleness Control And Topology Construction For Asynchronous Decentralized Federated Learning, Yizhou Shi, Qianpiao Ma, Yan Xu, Junlong Zhou, Ming Hu, Yunming Liao Jan 2026

Dystop: Dynamic Staleness Control And Topology Construction For Asynchronous Decentralized Federated Learning, Yizhou Shi, Qianpiao Ma, Yan Xu, Junlong Zhou, Ming Hu, Yunming Liao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a potential distributed learning paradigm that enables model training on edge devices (i.e., workers) while preserving data privacy. However, its reliance on a centralized server leads to limited scalability. Decentralized federated learning (DFL) eliminates the dependency on a centralized server by enabling peer-to-peer model exchange. Existing DFL mechanisms mainly employ synchronous communication, which may result in training inefficiencies under heterogeneous and dynamic edge environments. Although a few recent asynchronous DFL (ADFL) mechanisms have been proposed to address these issues, they typically yield stale model aggregation and frequent model transmission, leading to degraded training performance …

Purified Zero-Shot Sketch-Based Image Retrieval, Yang Zhou, Jingru Yang, Jin Wang, Kaixiang Huang, Guodong Lu, Shengfeng He Jan 2026

Purified Zero-Shot Sketch-Based Image Retrieval, Yang Zhou, Jingru Yang, Jin Wang, Kaixiang Huang, Guodong Lu, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sketches, as a new solution in multimedia systems that can replace natural language, are characterized by sparse visual cues such as simple strokes that differ significantly from natural images containing complex elements such as background, foreground, and texture. This misalignment poses substantial challenges for zero-shot sketch-based image retrieval (ZS-SBIR). Prior approaches match sketches to full images and tend to overlook redundant elements in natural images, leading to model distraction and semantic ambiguity. To address this issue, we introduce a distraction-agnostic framework, purified cross-domain matching (PuXIM), which operates on a straightforward principle: masking and matching. We devise a visual-cross-linguistic (VxL) sampler …

“Well Done, My Good And Faithful Servant”: Ai-Generated Religious Imagery, White Evangelical U.S. American Christian Nationalism, And Political Martyrdom, Miriam Wolff

Faculty Publications - Communications

Following the 2025 assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, social media platforms became saturated with AI-generated religious imagery framing him as a Christian martyr. This article examines how generative AI intensifies the production of sacred political meaning within white evangelical U.S. American Christian nationalist discourse. Focusing on Senator Ted Cruz's X post depicting Jesus embracing Kirk alongside the caption “Well done, My good and faithful servant,” this study employs rhetorical-iconographic analysis informed by visual rhetoric, iconography, and political theology. The analysis demonstrates how the post mobilizes familiar Christian visual conventions, scriptural language, and algorithmic circulation to frame Kirk's death as …

Higher Order Affordances For Serve Reception In Volleyball, Danilo G. Arruda, Bethany Freeman, Jeffrey B. Wagman, Thomas A. Stoffregen

Faculty Publications – Psychology

Using a head-mounted virtual reality system, we investigated the ability of skilled volleyball players to perceive virtual volleyball serves, and to use such information to control their actions in receiving serves. We compared shorter and taller groups of competitive players, and we varied the height of incoming serves. In two experiments, we found that, with very rare exceptions, participants used either an overhead or underhand technique to receive serves. Technique selection was reliably related to serve height, such that the overhead technique was used for higher serves and the underhand technique for lower serves. In Experiment 1, participants were free …

Hybridization Of Genetic Algorithm, Principal Component Analysis And Deep-Learning For Networks Intrusion Detection Systems, Mostafa A. R. Eltokhy, Hend M. A. Mahmoud, Mohammad Sammany

Trends in advanced sciences and technology

With cyber-attacks on the rise, the demand for precise and efficient Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) is more critical than ever. Traditional machine learning methods struggle with high false alarm and poor detection rates. IDS are crucial for creating secure digital environments by classifying and responding to network intrusions. However, the large volume of inputs for classification often leads to reduced accuracy and misclassification errors. To address this problem, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to optimize the number of classifier inputs, enhancing simplicity without compromising accuracy. A significant challenge in PCA for feature selection lies in determining the best cutoff …
