Fifty Terms Or More: Researching Curriculum Materials Centers, Caitlin Stewart Jan 2026

Fifty Terms Or More: Researching Curriculum Materials Centers, Caitlin Stewart

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Curriculum materials centers (CMCs), or specialized, localized collections of P-12 educational resources to support teacher preparation programs in higher education, are referred to by fifty unique terms in the Directory of Materials Centers and Collection 8th edition. Education Source (Ebsco) and Education Research Index (ProQuest) were searched with all distinct terms as keywords. The number of search results in the controlled search environment were logged, and all search results returned were coded as highly, somewhat, or not definitionally relevant to the established definition of a CMC. Recommendations are given for how to best search for highly relevant CMC literature, …

Étude Multidisciplinaire Du Confort Des Bouchons D'Oreilles : Vers Une Protection Auditive Efficace En Milieu De Travail, Olivier Doutres, Franck Sgard, Alessia Negrini, Alain Berry, Chantal Gauvin Jan 2026

Étude Multidisciplinaire Du Confort Des Bouchons D'Oreilles : Vers Une Protection Auditive Efficace En Milieu De Travail, Olivier Doutres, Franck Sgard, Alessia Negrini, Alain Berry, Chantal Gauvin

Hybrid Threats And Deterrence Effectiveness In Europe, Chick Edmond Jan 2026

Hybrid Threats And Deterrence Effectiveness In Europe, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Objectives:
The current European security landscape is characterized by the growing intersection of historical security challenges (i.e., "traditional" security issues) and new forms of hybrid threats. These changes call for a significant re-evaluation of the role of deterrence in today's world. Traditional deterrence approaches have focused on the use of military capability as well as credible retaliatory threats. However, the recent development of hybrid warfare, including cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, economic coercion, and clandestine sabotage has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish between times of war and times of peace. This research argues that existing frameworks for deterring adversaries will increasingly …

Revisiting Dependency In The Twenty-First Century: A Critical Analysis Of Africa-China Relations, Chick Edmond Jan 2026

Revisiting Dependency In The Twenty-First Century: A Critical Analysis Of Africa-China Relations, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

This research assesses the characteristics of today’s Africa–China relations using dependency theory, world systems theory, neocolonialism, and South-South cooperation, using comparisons between historical African dependence on European colonial powers and recent reliance on China in terms of trade, infrastructure, debt, and technology. This research identifies how contemporary cooperations either continue previous patterns of economic and political subordination or create a transformation of those relationships or provide a challenge to them. Using qualitative comparative historical analysis, along with specific case studies and secondary sources (academic journals, speeches, government publications, etc.), the research demonstrates that while Africa-China relations exhibit fewer structural features …

Nuclear Deterrence In The Age Of Hybrid Warfare, Chick Edmond Jan 2026

Nuclear Deterrence In The Age Of Hybrid Warfare, Chick Edmond

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

The main mechanism through which strategic stability can be preserved amongst nuclear armed states has traditionally been viewed as nuclear deterrence. Deterrence works on the premise that catastrophic consequences will cause rational restraint due to the fear of nuclear conflict. The proliferation of hybrid warfare (the coordinated use of conventional, cyber, informational, economic, and proxy instruments below the threshold of open war) has changed the strategic environment within which deterrence now operates. This research paper assesses whether nuclear deterrence is still effective in preventing escalation in an era marked by continuous grey zone competition amongst major powers. The paper also …

Approximate Decryption In Homomorphic Division And Privacy Impact, Ameerah Alsulami, Marius Silaghi Jan 2026

Approximate Decryption In Homomorphic Division And Privacy Impact, Ameerah Alsulami, Marius Silaghi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The result of a computation over secret inputs inherently reveals some information about those inputs; such semantic leakage is unavoidable. The challenge is to ensure that the computation method does not introduce additional, avoidable disclosure beyond what is implied by the output itself. This issue is particularly critical in privacy-preserving machine learning and cloud-based data processing, where homomorphic encryption enables computation over encrypted data but often relies on practical approximations. Division-enabled homomorphic encryption schemes based on rational encodings preserve arithmetic correctness, but their decrypted outputs may retain sufficient algebraic structure to enable inference of the original operands, creating representation-induced leakage. …

A Systematic Review Of Artificial Intelligence For Software Requirements In Open-Source Software, Amal Alharbi, Khaled Slhoub Jan 2026

A Systematic Review Of Artificial Intelligence For Software Requirements In Open-Source Software, Amal Alharbi, Khaled Slhoub

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Software stakeholders have seamlessly integrated artificial intelligence technologies into the requirements engineering processes for open-source software, which presents both opportunities and challenges. This systematic literature review examines the current state of artificial intelligence application in requirements engineering for open-source software and emphasizes the opportunities and challenges faced by practitioners. Based on the reviewed literature, artificial intelligence technologies, such as machine learning, natural language processing, large language models, and deep learning techniques, have been increasingly applied to support key requirements engineering activities, particularly requirements elicitation, classification, prioritization, and stakeholder analysis. However, the lack of structured data in open-source software directly challenges …

Botox Detection And Face Analytics Using Deep Learning, Audison Beaubrun, Gabriella Pangelinan, Michael King Jan 2026

Botox Detection And Face Analytics Using Deep Learning, Audison Beaubrun, Gabriella Pangelinan, Michael King

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures like Botox are increasingly common, yet their impact on facial analytics systems remains unexplored. We curate a novel dataset of 1,990 before-and-after images from 390 individuals who received cosmetic injectables. Using this dataset, we demonstrate that these subtle facial modifications measurably affect age estimation: FairFace and FaceXFormer show statistically significant shifts toward younger age estimates (-1.43 and-3.27 years, p <0.05), while MiVOLO remains stable. We also show these modifications are detectable: training deep learning models (ResNet-50, DenseNet-121, ConvNeXt-Tiny) to classify cosmetically-altered faces achieves up to 89% accuracy. Our findings reveal that even minor, non-surgical facial changes can bias age-based analytics and are algorithmically detectable-raising critical concerns for privacy, fairness, and robustness as facial analytics expand into high-stakes domains like insurance, hiring, and health assessment. © 2026, Florida Online Journals, University of Florida. A Bayesian architecture is proposed for integrating counting constraints in the process of decision making with Partially Observable Markov Decision Models for robotics. In addressed problems, the counted events are detected with noisy sensors, making their detection uncertain. We handle their count as a random variable to be updated on observations. In our test scenario, an iRobot Create3 moves along a hallway and needs to count how many doors it passes while following the wall. After detecting that the given number of doors have been passed, the robot should turn around and return to the starting region. For this kind …

Prom: Protection Against Reverse Engineering Attacks Through Programmable Logic Macros, Pravin Gaikwad, Aritra Dasgupta, Sudipta Paria, Peyman Dehghanzadeh, Jonathan Cruz, Swarup Bhunia

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The modern supply chain ecosystem exposes hardware intellectual property (IP) blocks to diverse confidentiality attacks aimed at reverse engineering (RE), piracy, or the extraction of design secrets. An emerging and potent design solution for IP protection against these attacks, particularly against RE, is the fine-grained redaction of security-critical logic and replacing the redacted logic with lookup tables (LUTs). The LUTs are then programmed in-field, similar to FPGAs, using protected bitstreams, thereby preventing untrusted foundries or test/assembly facilities from mounting RE attacks. The LUT-based redaction paradigm incurs a substantial hardware cost, with area overhead ranging from 70x to 100x and delay …

Changing Student Perspectives On Alcohol, Smoking & Vaping Through The Use Of Tetrahymena, Courtney Hausner, Douglas L. Chalker, Alexandra Forgerson, Carol E. Colaninno, Alison Brockhouse, Rachel Ruggirello

Institute for School Partnership: Research & Publications

We describe the redesign and classroom testing of an Advancing Secondary Science Education through Tetrahymena (ASSET) module addressing adolescent alcohol, smoking, and vaping. Using the 5E instructional model, the module has students investigate how alcohol, cigarette smoke extract, and vape extract affect the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena, an accessible proxy for effects on ciliated human respiratory cells. Students analyze public health data, conduct guided and self-designed investigations, and create outreach posters communicating evidence-based risks to peers. We report on observations from two classroom implementations, describing gains in students' ability to articulate toxicology concepts, connect cellular findings to whole-body health, and express …
