Poincaré Invariance And The Unruh Effect, Alexandre Deur, Stanley J. Brodsky, Craig D. Roberts, Balša Terzić Jan 2026

Poincaré Invariance And The Unruh Effect, Alexandre Deur, Stanley J. Brodsky, Craig D. Roberts, Balša Terzić

Physics Faculty Publications

In quantum field theory, the vacuum is popularly considered to be a complex medium populated with virtual particle + antiparticle pairs. To an observer experiencing uniform acceleration, it is generally held that these virtual particles become real, appearing as a gas at a temperature that grows with the acceleration. This is the Unruh effect. However, it has been shown that vacuum complexity is an artifact produced by treating quantum field theory in a manner that does not manifestly enforce causality. Choosing a quantization approach that patently enforces causality, the quantum field theory vacuum is barren, bereft even of virtual particles. …

Real-Time Estimators For Scattering Observables: A Full Account Of Finite-Volume Errors For Quantum Simulation, Ivan M. Burbano, Marco A. Carrillo, Rana Urek, Anthony N. Ciavarella, Raul A. Briceno Jan 2026

Real-Time Estimators For Scattering Observables: A Full Account Of Finite-Volume Errors For Quantum Simulation, Ivan M. Burbano, Marco A. Carrillo, Rana Urek, Anthony N. Ciavarella, Raul A. Briceno

Physics Faculty Publications

The real-time correlators of quantum field theories can be directly probed through new approaches to simulation, such as quantum computing and tensor networks. This provides a new framework for computing scattering observables in lattice formulations of strongly interacting theories, such as lattice quantum chromodynamics. In this paper, we prove that the proposal of real-time estimators of scattering observables is universally applicable to all scattering observables of gapped quantum field theories. All finite-volume errors are exponentially suppressed, and the rate of this suppression is controlled by the regulator considered, namely, a displacement of the spectrum of the theory into the complex …

Recent Progresses In Few-Nucleon Structure And Dynamics In Chiral Effective Field Theory, Laura Elisa Marcucci, Alex Gnech, Michele Viviani

Physics Faculty Publications

The most recent progresses made within the framework of chiral effective field theory for few-nucleon structure and low-energy reactions are here presented. In particular, for the A = 2 sector, the study of muon capture on deuteron is reviewed. Then, the results obtained using the Hyperspherical Harmonics ab-initio method for the 4He monopole form factor and the ³He(n→ ,p)³H parity-conserving asymmetry are described.

Extracting accurate results from neutrino oscillation and cross section experiments requires accurate simulation of the neutrino-nucleus interaction. The rescattering of outgoing hadrons (final state interactions) by the rest of the nucleus is an important component of these interactions. We present a new measurement of proton transparency (defined as the fraction of outgoing protons that emerge without significant rescattering) using electron-nucleus scattering data recorded by the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory on helium, carbon, and iron targets. This analysis uses a new data-driven method to extract the transparency. It defines transparency as the ratio of electron-scattering events with a detected proton …

Transverse Orbital Angular Momentum In The Proton, Osamah Alkasassbeh, Abha Rajan, Michael Engelhardt, Simonetta Liuti Jan 2026

Transverse Orbital Angular Momentum In The Proton, Osamah Alkasassbeh, Abha Rajan, Michael Engelhardt, Simonetta Liuti

Physics Faculty Publications

Using the equations of motion of QCD and Lorentz invariance relations, we show a new, more direct way of obtaining a sum rule for the proton’s quark transverse angular momentum in terms of contributions identified as spin and orbital components. The new sum rule can be understood as a twist-three relation, with the parton distribution gT encoding the quark transverse spin. We find that the complementary orbital component can be expressed in terms of a moment in the quark transverse momentum, kT, of the generalized transverse momentum-dependent distribution F₁₂, or alternatively in terms of the twist-three generalized …

Next-To-Next-To-Leading Power Corrections To Unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering, Ian Balitsky, Alexei Prokudin Jan 2026

Next-To-Next-To-Leading Power Corrections To Unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering, Ian Balitsky, Alexei Prokudin

Physics Faculty Publications

Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) is a key tool for exploring the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon through Transverse Momentum Dependent parton distributions and fragmentation functions. While leading-power contributions to the SIDIS cross-section are well established, next-to-leading power (NLP) corrections of order 1/Q and next-to-next-to-leading power (NNLP) corrections of order 1/Q²  to the hadronic tensor have only recently begun to be systematically investigated. These corrections are essential for reliable phenomenology and interpretation of modern high-precision data. In recent papers by one of the authors, NNLP corrections to the Drell-Yan process were derived using the rapidity factorization formalism. In the present …

Studying Electroweak Few-Body Observables In Chiral Effective Field Theory, Alex Gnech Jan 2026

Studying Electroweak Few-Body Observables In Chiral Effective Field Theory, Alex Gnech

Physics Faculty Publications

The use of nuclei to study electroweak probes is becoming increasingly relevant experimentally. The success of dark matter and neutrino experiments strongly depends on the ability to control nuclear effects in order to extract the fundamental parameters associated with external probes. Therefore, reliable theoretical calculations of nuclear structure and reactions, with well-controlled errors, are crucial for the success of experimental efforts. Currently, chiral effective field theory (χ EFT) coupled with {\it ab-initio} methods represents one of the best approaches that fulfills these requirements. To use this approach as a tool for studying fundamental physics, it is essential to validate it …

K-Long Facility At Jlab, Moskov Amaryan

Physics Faculty Publications

In this talk I present the outline of K-long Facility (KLF) at JLab [1]. It was approved by PAC48 in 2020 to run for 200 days of beamtime, equally divided between liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets, to measure dozens of hyperon states predicted by CQM and LQCD but not yet established. This facility also will allow to measure Kπ scattering in different channels to observe the so-called ᴷ scalar meson and measure its width and position with unprecedented accuracy. Finally, it will be shown that exotic baryons can be measured at this facility in formation reactions with a two-body final …

We propose to develop advanced ML models, such as physics informed neural network (PINN) based surrogate models, to accurately represent accelerator phase space transport. These surrogate models will enable precise diagnosis and prediction of beam phase space evolution along the beamline, facilitating real-time control and optimization. The developed models will be tested using the Upgraded Injector Test Facility (UITF) at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), providing a pathway toward ML-driven enhanced diagnostics and beamline control in operational accelerator environments. The primary aim will be to facilitate this by developing machine learning models that outperform traditional simulations in speed and …

The GLUEX experiment at Jefferson Lab has observed p(p) over bar and, for the first time, ΛΛ over bar and p Λ over bar photoproduction from a proton target at photon energies up to 11.6 GeV. The angular distributions are forward peaked for all produced pairs, consistent with Regge-like t-channel exchange. Asymmetric wide-angle antibaryon distributions show the presence of additional processes. In a phenomenological model, we find consistency with a double-t-channel exchange process where antibaryons are created only at the middle vertex. The model matches all observed distributions with a small number of free parameters. In the hyperon channels, we …

Mechanically induced conformational switching at the single-molecule level represents a fundamental mechanism for molecular functionality, yet quantitative characterization of the underlying force and energy landscape remains limited. Here, we study individual TBrPP-Co(II) molecules on Au(111) using qPlus atomic force microscopy. By reconstructing interaction potentials from 3D Δf(x,y,z) data, we determine a threshold force of ∼96 ± 8 pN and a tip-induced switching interaction energy of ∼38 ± 4 meV associate with the conformational transition. The isolated tip-molecule force follows a power law (exponent ∼6), indicating dominance of long-range van der Waals interactions. …

We present a microscopic analysis and evaluation of the dielectric susceptibility of a dielectric medium consisting of vector-type two-energy-level atoms, responding to a weak probe mode, when the atoms are driven by a strong coherent field. Each atom, in an environment of others, exists as a quasiparticle, further structuring the bulk medium. In a limit of dilute atomic gas, the dynamics of each atom follows the Mollow-type nonlinear excitation regime, and the medium susceptibility collectivizes the individual atomic responses to the probe mode. We outline how the collective dynamics can be interpolated up to a dense medium, and we argue …

Increasing Documentation Of Endotracheal Tube Cuff Pressures: A Quality Improvement Initiative For Flight Crew Providers, Matthew D. Noss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

ABSTRACT

Background: There was a lack of documentation of endotracheal tube (ETT) cuff pressures (CPs) by flight crew providers at Base 1 of HealthNet Aeromedical Services. A three-month pre-intervention data collection showed 1.8% of patients had initial CPs documented. Inadequate documentation and monitoring of ETT CPs can lead to patient complications such as tracheal injury and aspiration making this an important area for quality improvement.

Purpose: To increase documentation of ETT CPs through education and evidence-based interventions.

Intervention: This project implemented an educational in-service on ETT cuff syringe manometry for flight crew providers. The educational intervention consisted of …

Behavioral Adaptation To Systematically Changing Local Conditions Of Reinforcement, Kento Yasukawa Jan 2026

Behavioral Adaptation To Systematically Changing Local Conditions Of Reinforcement, Kento Yasukawa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Adaptation is the continual process of behavioral change in response to changes in environmental contingencies. One example of adaptation is to track the temporal distribution of reinforcers. The present dissertation investigated how responding tracked cyclically changing reinforcement schedules (i.e., cyclic interval [CI]) and how such tracking was influenced by concurrently available alternative reinforcement schedules. Across two experiments, four pigeons responded under a CI 60-s schedule in which the interreinforcer intervals (IRIs) changed systematically according to a sinusoidal function. The primary dependent variable was postreinforcement pauses (PRPs), with local response rates (response rates per IRI) examined as a secondary measure of …

Resilience And Reactivity: The Relation Between John Henryism And Cardiovascular Responses To Laboratory Stressors In An Appalachian Sample, Emma Raycher Thompson Jan 2026

Resilience And Reactivity: The Relation Between John Henryism And Cardiovascular Responses To Laboratory Stressors In An Appalachian Sample, Emma Raycher Thompson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

John Henryism active coping (JHAC), named for folk hero John Henry, is defined as the perception that one can overcome stressors through hard work (James et al., 1983). This construct has been tied to numerous health outcomes, showing a negative influence on cardiovascular health (Bennett et al., 2004). Many researchers have examined the relation between JHAC and cardiovascular reactivity to stress, though findings are mixed. Further, despite the legend of John Henry occurring in Appalachia, and traits associated with John Henryism, such as resilience, being prominent within this region, no study has examined the relation between JHAC and reactivity in …

Elucidating Structure–Reactivity Relationships In Ni-Catalyzed Co2 Methanation, Majed Alam Abir Jan 2026

Elucidating Structure–Reactivity Relationships In Ni-Catalyzed Co2 Methanation, Majed Alam Abir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to methane represents a promising strategy for carbon utilization and renewable energy storage within power-to-gas systems. When coupled with hydrogen derived from renewable electricity, CO2 methanation enables the conversion of intermittent energy sources into storable and transportable chemical fuels compatible with existing natural gas infrastructure. Nickel-based catalysts have emerged as leading candidates for this reaction due to their high activity towards CO2 methanation, abundance, and cost. However, the performance and long-term stability of Ni catalysts are strongly influenced by catalyst support properties, Ni nanoparticle size, and promoter effect, and …

Evaluation Of Potential Factors Limiting The Expansion Of Invasive Carp (Hypophthalmichthys Spp.) In The Ohio River Basin, Erin Shepta

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The introduction of aquatic invasive species is one of the greatest threats to freshwater biodiversity around the world. Two species of invasive carp, bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (H. molitrix) have spread throughout much of the Mississippi River Basin, resulting in serious ecological impacts to native communities. Their spread in the Ohio River, a major tributary of the Mississippi River, appears to have slowed, with limited evidence of upstream advancements. Here, we investigated abiotic and biotic factors that may be contributing to the reduced spread of invasive carp in the Ohio River Basin. Generally, …

Work analysis and competency modeling are crucial to this alignment.
